This looks wild. And ultra cheesy. Cheesy is great.
It was going to be a Duke Nukem game when 3D Realms discovered, to their displeasure, that they sold the rights to Duke Nukem the character, and not just Duke Nukem Forever, to Gearbox. So they retooled it using a Duke sidekick that was in earlier versions of DNF.
They're apparently going to make a prequel to Bombshell using the Build engine (the same engine Duke Nukem 3D used) so that's kind of neat. I'm not hearing great things about the game though.
EDIT: I should read the thread before posting. I figured nobody else would mention the batshit history behind the game.
I mean, Bombshell is getting shit reviews, and I don't know how the game portrays its lead heroine, but she actually looks better than I remember her looking in early footage. It's a goddamned low bar, but at least she's wearing clothes.
Now if only the game wasn't a legally distinct spinoff from a different deplorably boring and shitty franchise.
So guys my hunger for mystery games led a friend to recommend me Black Closet, an indie game on Steam, and....it's pretty great!
You are the student council president at a fancy all-girls private boarding school and your job is to prevent scandals from ruining the school's reputation by solving problems and menacing troublemakers. You're like half Veronica Mars and half Gestapo.
The game generates cases procedurally. A girl might have run away, or school supplies could be going missing, or someone is spreading gossip, or a g-g-ghost is haunting the dorm. And there are more serious problems, like drugs or suicide threats. Each species of problem has several subtypes - sometimes the suicidal girl is depressed about a breakup, sometimes about a test, other times she's the victim of malicious gossip from one of her friends or nother ome at all was at fault and it's all a big misunderstanding.
You send your Student Council minions to question witnesses, search crime scenes, tail suspects, harass troublemakers, and so forth. Your friends have stats that make each of them more likely to succeed at certain jobs, and those skills can be raised through experience. You can't take too many school days to work a case, though, or events will build to a disastrous climax (the billionaire alum's daughter fails her big test, someone ODs, the stolen selfies are posted online).
It actually works! I didn't think procedural mystery generation was possible, but this game cracks it by turning it into, effectively, a worker-placement puzzle. But the semantic content isn't just fluff; you have to pay attention to the text to figure out what you're doing. They aren't hopelessly divorced from one another.
There's also an overarching, non-procedural story involving you, your friends, death threats, and a conspiracy to destroy the school. And your friends can be chatted to and have their own stories and wuestlines (and romances).

Yeah, I have this already. Because it's a Hanako game and those are pretty much surefire good games. All well-written, all with lots of meat to them. Most people probably discount them right away because of the names ("Magical Diary"? "Date Warp"? Etc) and the cutesy anime art. Those people are missing out. I have adored every one of their games that I've played so far. And people here who have given in to my poking and prodding and played one or another of them have enjoyed them as well, to the best of my knowledge. Like, I don't think I recall anyone coming back from "Long Live the Queen" and saying they didn't like it.
The Hanako games on Steam:
Magical Diary - I played this through at least 3 times so far. It's probably my favorite. The complexity of the branching paths is impressive and you could probably play it 10 times and still find new things. Bonus: it just recently (a week or so ago) got a major update and is now back on my short list to replay again.
Date Warp - Holy cow, this game took me by surprise. It leans more VN than most Hanako games, but it's fantastic. There's a heap of possible endings and at least one of them left me sitting there slackjawed and mindblown. Worth a look to anyone who likes good stories and mysteries.
Long Live the Queen - Princess Murder Simulator. This one has seen a lot of traction in this thread, largely due to some bunny streaming. It's not only a great game, it features a pink-haired protagonist. Incredible depth and branching. Surprisingly brutal, too.
The last two, unfortunately, I have not yet gotten to but are both on my to-be-played-soon list.
The Royal Trap - looks more VN along the lines of Date Warp. Some great art. Apparently a ton of replay value (like every Hanako game).
Hanako games are not cheap, and I don't know that they often get deep discounts. But I believe they're worth the asking price. With the 3 that I have played so far, they have demonstrated their ability to put out quality games with tons of possibilities and lots of replay value. And they get well supported: Magical Diary is 4 years old and still got a major update recently. LLTQ was released in 2013 and just got an update in November. Etc.
I uhh... I might be a fan. I would love to see more people take a look at these gems.

I had a lot of fun playing and streaming Long Live the Queen and Magical Diary. I'd also recommend those. (I also need to go back and replay them for some of the other endings, at some point.)
@Pixelated Pixie, now your post makes me want to buy and play the rest of them, too. Black Closet has already jumped on and off my wishlist several times. (I'm trying to want fewer games and posts like yours make it difficult!)
Thanks @Berylline for starting my birthday early with SquareCells. I'm always up for a new puzzle game and this one looks like it might be a good tablet one.
I had some fun with Magical Diary and using different spells in combinations during the trial portions, but my eyes glazed over during the actual dating sim because that is seriously not for me.
I kinda bounced off LLTQ from its reliance on trial-and-error. You pretty much have to game the system with knowledge you simply can't acquire ahead of time, and are essentially throwing wave after wave of princesses at a bleak, uncaring death maze until one of them survives to coronation (woo falcons!).
Magical Diary, on the other hand, was charming and well designed. Puzzle solutions emerge based on the spells you pick up through course selection, and the VN portions have a hefty chunk of branching content you won't find on a first playthrough. Solid writing too, it toed with some weighty subject matter without going too far from legally-distinct-from-Hogwarts shenanigans (piss off, Demon Morrissey, I'm going shopping).
Haven't played the others, so no strong opinions there: Royal Trap looks like LLTQ the VN (maybe), Black Closet looks like Evil Student Council Simulator 2015 (nah), Date Warp looks like that one Dark Brotherhood quest from Oblivion but with science fiction... the VN (go on). But Hanako as a whole seem to love what they do and put a lot of effort into making quirky, clever titles. I can respect the craft even if an individual title doesn't do it for me. Can definitely recommend Magical Diary at the very least.

I'm hoping they do (technically another) update to Cute Knight at some point. Similar kind of skill system as LLTQ, but much more freedom to do what you want instead of having to meet stat thresholds for certain events. It would be more ambitious than other things they've done since given the scope if they wanted to keep the current standards they've developed for social interactions and overall writing.
The thing about Date Warp that amuses me is that it drew some inspiration from Rocky Horror Picture Show and there's some nods to that: Brad and Janet on a date, car breaks down in the rain, they end up at a mansion full of weird people... That's pretty much where the similarities end, but it still amuses me.
Alas, nobody breaks out in song and there's no Tim Curry. Still, a fantastic story/game.
I knocked two VNs off the backlog today. One was pretty terrible and had the most unlikable protagonist ever (Aozora Meikyuu) and one had tons of potential and style that it almost completely failed to capitalize on (Echo Tokyo), with flavor just gushing from the edges but never sampled. However, it's apparently just an intro of more to come, I guess, so I will hold off on final judgment until I see where it goes... if anywhere.
I recently hit the "ho ho ho, now I have a machine gun" part of Rise of The Tomb Raider, and I think future games in this series should feature Lara embracing her sociopathy. Aside from slaughtering endangered animals, ambushing and choking the life out of her enemies, and leaving priceless historical records carelessly exposed to the elements after she's read them and learned how to better murder people, she just has no hesitation when faced with the prospect of killing her way through an entire field of meatsacks.

Anybody else play The Eigengrau Menagerie? It's a neat little linear point-and-click adventure game. The puzzles aren't great, but I found the worldbuilding and backstory pretty interesting.
The puzzles consist of using your special goggles to freeze time while confronting an enemy, then carefully observing the scene in front of you to come up with a way to defeat your opponent. When you unfreeze time, the opponent will knock you out in a hurry, so you have to click on the correct sequence of objects to foil them. Pretty simplistic, but not bad.
The world is the really neat part. Lots of Capitalized Words (Thoughtforms, Pilgrim Hikers, Empathy). Wild, high fantasy concepts all over the place. One of the Thoughtforms is a being composed purely of "Honest Thoughts" that somehow gained sentience.
Only took me about 45 minutes to work my way through, so it's a good candidate for a lazy afternoon or single evening playthrough. I'm finding these short games to be more and more appealing to me these days.

Yeah, once you figure out how combat works the first 3 or so sectors should be very easy on Easy. On Normal you might get awful rolls that screw you, but you can carve your strategy out to minimize risk, or try riskier ventures with the intent of getting greater rewards.

After watching a couple of streamers do hard-mode win streaks of every ship, I can safely say that the amount of bullshit RNG in FTL is very, very small. You just need experience to know what information to look for to make a very high percentage of runs winnable (and some days you get 4 Flak Cannons and you chuckle about how you ever thought this game was challenging).
edit: Further on steam libraries, I think a lot of the regulars here have been active in the big Steam sales for years, back when they really were crazy (80% off publisher catalogs, $2 games on the front page down from $15, bundle-packs of ordinarily singularly sold games etc.). With the bi-annual sales finally coming to its senses in its race to the bottom, I don't think new-comers to this thread will experience the same backlog explosions we had 3-4 years ago.

The puzzles consist of using your special goggles to freeze time while confronting an enemy, then carefully observing the scene in front of you to come up with a way to defeat your opponent. When you unfreeze time, the opponent will knock you out in a hurry, so you have to click on the correct sequence of objects to foil them. Pretty simplistic, but not bad.
The world is the really neat part. Lots of Capitalized Words (Thoughtforms, Pilgrim Hikers, Empathy). Wild, high fantasy concepts all over the place. One of the Thoughtforms is a being composed purely of "Honest Thoughts" that somehow gained sentience.
Only took me about 45 minutes to work my way through, so it's a good candidate for a lazy afternoon or single evening playthrough. I'm finding these short games to be more and more appealing to me these days.
Well now I'm definitely replaying Saints Row 3 with the likeness of Lara with a British accent. I imagine she created the 3rd Street Saints after realising that her true calling wasn't raiding tombs for ancient relics, it was RKO'ing gymbros

Yeah, I got caught up in the FTL hype train. Played it and lost immediately to random space pirates or something. Like, I never got more than 3 or so jumps before dying. Seemed to be all RNG and I said screw it and uninstalled it. Would totally gift that away if I could.

I get where you're going with that, but I don't think HS has near the RNG craziness as FTL. Maybe I just didn't "get" FTL.

Yeah, once you figure out how combat works the first 3 or so sectors should be very easy on Easy. On Normal you might get awful rolls that screw you, but you can carve your strategy out to minimize risk, or try riskier ventures with the intent of getting greater rewards.
And Hard is just bullshit, don't play Hard.
Multiply this by ten or twenty and you'll see how some people in the thread feel about their libraries. Which forumer was it that was talking about how as a kid they wished that one day they would have more games to play than they had time to play them, and that their childhood dream had become their adult nightmare?
Steam sales and dirt cheap bundles will add games to your account so fast it'll feel like a blur. It is nuts sometimes.
edit: Further on steam libraries, I think a lot of the regulars here have been active in the big Steam sales for years, back when they really were crazy (80% off publisher catalogs, $2 games on the front page down from $15, bundle-packs of ordinarily singularly sold games etc.). With the bi-annual sales finally coming to its senses in its race to the bottom, I don't think new-comers to this thread will experience the same backlog explosions we had 3-4 years ago.
Unless its their birthday. Then they're fucked.
