So... the Vive is a thing, huh?

That's good, that's good. We definitely needed more VR headsets cluttering the market. What's a market without choice, right?

(I don't see the appeal of VR headsets at all.)

Then why do you care how many of them there are?

It's only the thing we've been promised in every science fiction book, movie, comic, etc. for the past 40 or so years...

More headsets means more competition, which drives innovation. Bring 'em on.

Then in five years when I can actually afford one of the bastards, I'll worry about which one is a better fit for my needs.

Not at all? Scifi has promised tons of various things over the last 40 years. Voice control, AR, drones, FTL space travel, holodecks, cyberbrains... Scifi promises a ton of possible and impossible stuff

I would not have a single care
if my eyebrows were above my hair
for it would make me anime.
I would be in a cartoon way.

    Instead of normal human needs
I'd crave blushes and nose bleeds.
Until that day, I eat ramen
and wish and wonder "When. oh when?"

So, what is a "virtumal" realm? Tycho uses that word in his text post as well, in "the virtumal porns that I’ve seen, primarily on the Gear VR". Is almost sounds like a portmanteau of "virtual" and "tumor", which would perversely be right up his newspeak alley, but I'm having my doubts.

But more headsets means more exclusivity, fewer products that work on all headsets, and more of a possibility of being out in the cold because you backed the wrong horse.

I do not want a $900 paperweight because all the software is being made for the other one (of 7)

It really depends on where the software you want to run lives. I expect almost everything for PC gaming will support the big two (Vive & Oculus), though smaller studios and indies may only support one. PSVR is obviously going to be platform locked to the PS, and Gear is phone-based. The real question is PS/PC multi-platform games I guess

My prediction: any hardware that comes out after this year will be designed to run games made for either Vive or Oculus, as they will want to target consumers who were early adopters and want to upgrade. It also means that any future hardware makers don't need to attract loads of game makers for their launch, as there will already be a stable of pre existing games for their consumers.

I thinks that the biggest variety will be with controllers, and games on PC are already pretty good at alternative control schemes.

Why is the Vive designed to look evil?
