Help me get a cool avatar

SavgeSavge Indecisive Registered User regular
Don't know if it's against the rules to break the fourth wall here or not but I'm getting tired of not having a face on the forum and I'd like to get a cool avatar like a lot of the people I see around here.

But I just don't have any idea what to get or where to get it. Can anyone help? How do people do it?

Click the settings icon in the upper right of the window.

    Choose "Edit Profile."

On the left side will be a bunch of links to things you can do

    Choose "change my picture"

On that screen, upload a picture from your computer

If it's cropped weird you can change that in "edit my thumbnail"

Pick an image you like, save to computer, and upload it. No porn.

Get an image editing program, like Photoshop or GIMP, that can handle .png or .gif if you want something animated. Open up an image you download from wherever and rescale or crop it to square, at least 80x80 pixels since that's what the dimensions are on posts. You can go higher and it will scale appropriately; I think 250x250 is the profile size. Make sure the product is less than 2mb.

As for the 'what' it should represent something you're interested in, or feel strongly about.

Step One: Drag and drop the default avatar to your desktop.
Step Two: Right-click on it and select Edit.
Step Three: Draw googly eyes and a silly face on it.
Step Four: Upload it to site by using the Change My Picture feature under Edit Profile (the gear icon on these forums).
    Step Five: Ta-da! PROFIT!
    3b3tv8tjgg75.png

EDIT: Seriously, just find a picture that you like in a square format, and upload that.

I know how to upload an avatar I was looking more for ideas on the content, and any gotchas I should know about like sizing for Retina displays.

Don't people hate animated avatars? I wouldn't want people blocking out my avatar because it's distracting.

The content should be something you like/feels represents you/amuses you. It's you, after all. Pick a character from your favorite show, or a cool design, or a funny image you enjoy.

Mine is animated but the picture is so small most people won't notice. Just go with something you like, really there isn't a bad choice. Though, if you ever change it people might not recognize you, I tend to remember the avatar over username usually, haha.

Also: nobody cares if the thing is animated, if anything a lot of people like it. What the image should be is something you want people thinking represents you. I use Atrus from Myst because it's one of my favorite characters ever, and I look similar to the guy IRL. Some people use characters they like a lot and think are funny instead. Otehrs use things that invoke a certain feel, humor, tone, or color scheme they like.

Your avatar is how you want people to think about you. I'm an academic nerd from Florida, which lines up fairly well with what I've got.

How do you want people to see you? Online you can construct any identity you like, either closeish to the mark like some of us, or something totally different if you want. Sky's the limit.

Well, size limit is the limit. But withi those limits are limitless limits of limitations.

Also be wary that people will take you literally. Paladin is very much a glowing yellowish smoke demon, Tofystedeth is a strange spiky haired doom jedi, and Local Jay is actually Bill Murray.

    This is science fact.

It should be easy enough to have an animated avatar that isn't bloody obnoxious. I mean, I doubt most people notice that my avatar is animated. Just try to avoid anything seizure inducing and you should be good to go.

It doesn't move much, but every 15 seconds or so (it's been a while since I made it and I forgot the timing) it does a sly side-to-side glance and winks.
Depending on the size of your mobile, it might be too small to notice.

I think you're right, the harder I look the less satisfied I seem to be with my options.

I have no idea though how to really find "the one". It's not like I going around looking at memes nor do I have any particular characters I'd be interested in.
