I just got home from seeing Civil War. It's so good!

There are a lot of things to mention, but I'd probably forget a bunch if I tried to list them, so I'll just say one minor thing:

    I did not expect
the airport fight scene to be so funny.

I propose a motion to change the thread title to something that really reflects the core motivation for Cap in this movie.
Like, I get it, it is based on the civil war series. However, Cap's main concern is not civility or war-ing.

What is his primary concern during the movie? Finding someone. Specifically, Zemo.

    Captain America: Finding Zemo

Spoilered for extremely basic plot formula.

That's the sound of my shoes.

I dunno, that may be the plot point, but that is absolutely not what most of the movie is about.

Edit: oh, right, there was another movie with a very similar title some years back, I get it.

Cap is a Skrull. It's the best explanation for his increased aggressiveness over the last few movies, and how he is a huge fucking hypocrite the entire time, with little actually being accomplished outside of creating strife and critically injuring people.

I definitely did not see Cap
as being a hypocrite in the film. Certainly Tony's decision to play ball with Ross came back to bite him in the ass at the end of the film, which was Cap's whole reason not to sign the accords. And then Tony goes off and makes his own choice to do what's right even though it's not sanctioned, so really the hypocrite is....

    But what's your angle?

His entire thing over the last few movies was him getting pissed at people for keeping secrets that could end up being dangerous.

Then in this movie, he doesn't tell anyone else about the winter soldier program, that Zemo appears to be trying to re-activate. Instead he starts a fight that ends with Rhodey being crippled, in order to steal a quinjet. Instead of just telling Stark/the others about it.

He admits to having known Bucky killed Stark's parents the entire time, and never told him.

Plus the whole, refusing to agree to a legal mandate allowing for super human action, to allow for oversight and control.

So basically, he doesn't care that secrets were kept, he just feels he is the only one who should ever be trusted with anything. Absolutely no one else in the world except him should be making any kind of decision.

To tie it into Skrulls, he is basically trying to sow discord while putting himself into a position of power.

I didn't get that he knew very much about the Winter Soldier program at all, though the super spoiler at the end of the film, yes, that a bit of hypocrisy. I wouldn't say the MAIN thrust of his finger wagging has been over keeping secrets, but he was definitely cheesed about it in AoU, so you're spot on there. But the start of the airport fight does begin with him saying "this is the deal" and Tony just does not want to hear about it. In any case, I totally see the point you're making, but I don't think that is the central conflict that drives the plot, or that Steve wanting to be able to choose where and when he gets involved is really at odds with anything he's done in previous films.

I mean, how well this film lines up with previous material is one of the things that makes it so wonderful when enjoyed as part of a whole rather than as a stand-alone film.

Avengers1, was him being upset at shield for keeping the tesseract secret, and creating weapons with it, because he felt it was too dangerous.
Winter Soldier was also almost entirely about how SHIELD was keeping secrets and compartmentalizing, and how it lead to HYDRA being a thing and the damage they caused. Steve refused to let SHIELD be re-established because of his views on this.
As you mentioned AoU was also about how Tony was keeping secrets and performing actions that could be dangerous.

Now in CW, suddenly Cap is the one keeping secrets and doing things that are dangerous, that everyone else disagrees with.

It is a massive 180 degree spin in character.

Question, this isn't really a spoilery thing but if you wanna get into specifics in your answer I'm fine with your spoiling stuff in spoiler tags

One of the reviews I read, the review that got me most excited, was that by the end of the film when things go down the movie has established the sense that both characters are pretty equal amounts of "right," and that it's not really like the comic where one side's view is going to end up undercut with dick moves to make you want to side with the other

    Is that true?

Ideally, I would leave the theater conflicted on the central issues of the film

    No real spoilers for unbreakable;
I think it's less about both sides being right, and more about both sides having handled the issue badly at some point during.
With one side still being in the wrong.
    Cap's team.
