Mystique, you joker

And there's a ton of other characters too, like the titular Apocalypse and Magneto and Jubilee and Psylocke and Nightcrawler and probably Wolverine, it is an X-Men movies after all.

Also there was that other movie with X-Men characters from earlier this year, the one with Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, I heard that was pretty good too!

Keep your spoilers marked, at least for a little bit, this ain't out yet.

I am super looking forward to the movie even though what I'm seeing in review blurbs -- I haven't read any full reviews and won't until after I see it -- makes me a bit nervous.

Still, I've already bought tickets for myself and a friend. Was planning on going to the midnight opening, but apparently they aren't doing a midnight opening, but rather like an 8pm opening. I love the feel of midnight shows and 8pm is just not the same, and also it doesn't work in terms of scheduling. So we're going that Saturday during the daytime.

I'm very excited for the story itself but I'm almost more interested to see where things stand at the end and how it might set up for the future.

The x-men are my favorite comic book thing ever ever and I'll always have a soft spot for these movies. I've seen first class so many times I've lost count. I want apocalypse to be awesome and I want them to never make another one so fox can sell marvel the rights back and they actually start making x-men comics again. After fifty years of magnetos, apocalypses, juggernauts, sinisters, phoenixes, onslaughts, exiles, and endless summerses, who knew the thing that would finally kill off all the mutants was corporate meddling

They are still making X-Men comics

    Lots of them

Currently there are 6 ongoing X-Titles and a couple of miniseries

    They're doing just fine, Whippy

I'll see this, but I'm not like...excited for it

I can't get excited about X-Men movies honestly because they vary so wildly in quality for me

I see it, it is good or it is bad, and then I move on

That said, I am super excited about Jubilee finally being in one of these, even if she doesn't have a major role

Also, was that cameo ever confirmed or denied?

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
Jubilee apparently barely has a role at all

    Like, 3 lines of dialogue.

I liked first class a whole heck of a lot, and DoFP was okay and at least interesting

Apocolyspe however just looks super boring. I'm getting none of the personality of the earlier films in this mini-trilogy.

I'm super excited for this movie, personally.

I've been overall into the X- franchise more than the MCU, as it has felt more willing to take some weird risks to me. Not all of those have paid off super well, but I enjoy that they have at very least gone for it. Plus, I really like the X-Men, moreso than I like, well, most of the Avengers. I've heard mixed things about this movie, but I'm still looking forward to it, especially since some of the reviews I've read have highlighted my favorite parts of the X-Men as the best parts of Apocalypse.

    I'm in the same boat!

I actually want to see if they touch upon what happens to Wolverine after DoFP whatsoever, as we know it's Mystique who "saves" him from his briny fate in the Potomac.

I generally look forward to an X-Men movie more than an MCU one precisely because I will have no idea what to expect. They often aren't good. But they can be quite surprising. And sometimes are quite great. It's a gamble, but I can often miss that feeling.

There is a narrative going around that Marvel is killing the X-Men because they don't have the rights to them in film and have more incentive to push characters they do have the rights to

And in merchandising it is absolutely true, they are straight up replacing X-Men on cover reprints on t-shirts and whatnot with Marvel owned characters

But in the comics it is not true at all, the X-Men still have half a dozen ongoings and are an active part of the universe and are just fine.

For reference: they just had their top writer complete a 3 year run on the two lead X-Men titles and followed it up with their big acquisition from DC, Jeff Lemire, taking over the lead book and Old Man Logan.

Saw this today, I enjoyed it but it's got some issues

The worst part is we're back to the old X-men problem of way too many characters and a whole bunch of cool ones getting really short-changed in characterization and screen time, which is a shame

But! It was fun, suprisingly funny ( I feel like these movies are always pretty funny but I'm always surprised by that for some reason), and good lord Oscar Isaac was better than someone buried under all that makeup has any right to be

I am still so happy that they were able to use DofP to put right what once went wrong with X3.

    So happy.

So is this a soft reboot or something, or was this corporate thinking of "Well Future Past did well, so uh 70s Xmen now."

    Future Past was 70s X-Men, this is 80s X-Men

What is everyone's hope for the inevitable 90s X-Men flick? I've seen a lot of buzz about the Phoenix saga, but I honestly don't want that, 'cause I'm not a big fan of the X-Men going to space (and I don't think that will work as well in a world that seems to exclusively have the X-Men in it).

I think I'd be most into a Mister Sinister flick? Like, his whole weird thing with the Summers/Grey families and all of that. Really give the new Jean and Scott and chance to shine.

Dark Phoenix Saga, which surprisingly doesn't have to involve a 'ton' of going to space. I mean, there is the fight in the blue area of the moon, but most of the action can be done terrestrial.

  • MarathonMarathon Registered User regular
I'd prefer the Dark Phoenix saga as well. They would finally have a chance to do that iconic story right and even as a kid I couldn't give less of a shit about Mister Sinister.

Look, it's Jean Grey. It will not stand in an age of comic book movies that she doesn't die and get brought back every few years.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

I don't want the Dark Phoenix saga mainly because they only just introduce Jean and Scott in this movie

I think they had the right idea doing it for X3, it's just the execution that got bungled

  • MarathonMarathon Registered User regular
If you wanted to do it correctly, it would almost have to take place over 2 or 3 movies anyway. It doesn't need to be the sole focus, just become more prominent as it progresses and then finish with a 3rd movie all about Dark Phoenix.

  • StraightziStraightzi Here we may reign secure, and in my choice, To reign is worth ambition though in HellRegistered User regular
Dark Phoenix Saga, as written in the comics, involves a ton of space stuff. Some of that you could definitely doctor, but I feel like that might take some of the punch out of the story.

Like, remember, Dark Phoenix Saga is when she flies off into space and commits galacticide.

I think some version of The Morlocks and the Mutant Massacre would be really good for a 90s X-Men film

Really lean into the counter culture grunge bullshit of the era

I may change my answer to that, I love it

X-23 showing up in a 90s X-Flick would be the weirdest thing

Her film debut would be in a film set a decade before she was created!

(Jubilee was created in 89 so she barely makes the cut)

    CYpGAPn.png
  • StraightziStraightzi Here we may reign secure, and in my choice, To reign is worth ambition though in HellRegistered User regular
And obviously for the 00s X-Men movie we have Magneto inventing a machine that can turn ordinary people into mutants, which he needs to use mutant newcomer Rogue to power

    Not real spoilers but whatever
I really wanted that shot in the most recent trailer to be a fakeout shot.

And have like, all of the older X-Men assume that Wolverine did it, based on the condition of the bodies and what Jean and Scott describe. But then it turns out it was actually Laura.

The main thing I want is for the Starjammers to show up, for Cyclops to meet his long lost space pirate dad, and for his dad having an awesome mustache. Everything else is gravy.

    Not really.

Jean had like a dark more powerful side that made her lose control and was called "The Phoenix" but it isn't at all like the phoenix so presumably they are planning on taking another shot at it.

it was implied to be the phoenix force, but x3 was such an incomplete movie that it barely counts

I would say they should continue the current trend and do an X-Men vs. X-Men movie, but that's pretty much every X-Men movie anyway.

I'd be interested in seeing them do the Juggernaut more in-depth. He was my favorite villain in the cartoon, and while I thought Vinnie Jones did well in X3 his screen time was just real low.

Maybe they can give that character another shot in Deadpool 2 so he can fight Colossus.

Plus the version from X3 was so bad it would be ripe for Deadpool to make fun of.
