Sorry all Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze Music opinions must first be passed by Jeff Gerstmann

So this is like the pocket veto of summer jam rulings then?

Man, I thought Canadian music would all be stuff like Stan Rogers.

Though I guess I knew better. Celine Dion is Canadian, yeah?

I....can't help cringing at the mention of Celine Dion, I kind of can't stand her music, sorry!

Canadian music is pretty heavily influenced by the English and American scenes, but it's encouraged to grow by content laws that force radio and television to have a certain percentage of Canadian content, as well as some pretty solid government grants that go to the arts. While we do love stuff like Stan Rogers and Spirit of the West and Great Big Sea, that tends to be more of a Maritime style rather than something the entire country produces. Bands like Chromeo and Metric and the Arcade Fire are pretty representative of what most popular indie sounds like here. And I think it's also required by all citizens to be able to quote at least 3 Tragically Hip songs word for word.

Country and American-ish pop and rap are also pretty popular but I don't really have the background in those genres to drop any recommendations.

Show me a Maritimer who can't quote Barrett's Privateers by heart and I'll show you a liar.

Because we're in the southern hemisphere, Australian summer music has the confusing property of also being partly Christmas music, so I can't morally show it to you outside of Christmas time.

I have a podcast about Digimon called the Digital Moncast, on Audio Entropy.

Does this mean Vance Joy's Riptide is a Christmas song, because it is absolutely a summer jam to me, mostly because I can play the hell out of it on my Uke

I once talked to someone overseas who was convinced we celebrated Christmas in July, because we told her that Christmas was at summer time back home.

Did you play along to fuck with them? I cannot imagine how badly I would troll people if I had that kind of power at my disposal.

In a sense you might as well. Because when I think of July, I mostly think of the height of summer. The actual calendar doesn't factor into it much.

And I joke about us having Christmas summer music, but I actually can't think of any music I specifically associate with summer time fun.

Also it's way too hot to go outside in summer, fuck me.

The weird part is plenty of us couldn't get past the first verse sober, but three beers in the lyrics manifest in our minds as if by magic

(I also know all the words to The Mary Ellen Carter but can't sing it because I start sobbing during the last verse, assuming I make it through the choruses)
