Feels a little weird that they're going to Kickstarter at all, when they seem like they're a company that's a) doing alright financially and b) was already in the process of making a "remaster" of this game before transitioning it into a complete "reboot" (these terms are quickly becoming useless)

Which makes me worried they won't hit their initial goal at all

And that would suck because what I'm seeing of the demo looks great

Judging by the pace of the KS, it's probably safe to say they're going to reach the 900k.

Title should be "LOOK AT YOU, BACKER"

It's listed on the kickstarter, but it bears pointing out in the thread that you can play the 'Pre-Alpha demo' on Steam, GOG and Humble right now:

Thanks! Putting that in the OP. Gonna get the demo as soon as I get home from work, actually.

It turns out that games cost money and that game devs need to eat to live. From what I understand from lurking in Stephen's general direction, it was that they realized that the scope of what they wanted to do went well beyond a simple remaster, and that they'd need more money to do it.

Also, a Kickstarter is a great way to drum up publicity for a game, especially one that's already 80% done like this one. In fact, I actually believe that the closer you can do a KS to launch the better off you'll be, because 1. if you don't hit a single stretch goal, or even make your KS at all, you can still release a finished, polished product and 2. if you're using KS as publicity, a shinier demo / thingy makes for moar peeps deciding to throw their dollas at you.

Man... that thread title. Instantly brought her the whole speech back to mind. Few games have stuck with me like this one. That and the music.

If I were to make a game, or back a game via KS, I would definitely prefer that it be done the way they're doing it.

Unfortunately, no linking to active kickstarters allowed, though you can talk about them as much as you want, and wink suggestively and point in their direction.

Fired up the demo, the base move speed feels rather sluggish, and either I missed the log that tells you the medbay door code or the media player aug thingy wasn't letting me look at it. Might fire it up again to check.

Overall it felt pretty solid for what little it is, textures were rather pixelly, but I suspect that super hi res textures aren't a priority at this stage.

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

The MedBay door code isn't in a log: look at and around the keypad itself. And I thought the movement felt a bit sluggish too....until I fired up System Shock 2 again (getting the ol' SHODAN itch something fierce!). Movement in the demo is close (might be a bit more floaty) to what's in SS2.

My only, and I mean only, worry right now

is the RPG stuff for that stretch goal. If they DO hit that goal, they better give us an option to turn that right the fuck off. System Shock 1 and RPGesque stats is a combination I don't want to see. What they have in the demo is juuuuuuuuuuuust fine.

Exactly, yes. After looking at the stretch goals I was about to come here and say pretty much that (except that I haven't played the demo yet).

I was initially a little nervous because the first demo they did had only an ominous orchestral track, and I literally went to Stephen Kick (as I said, I've freelanced for him) and was like "STEVE. Steve. You're killing me, where the techno at" and he was like "don't worry I got this :) " and I should learn to trust his weird butt because they got fucking Zircon on it and I'm going to die

I'm so sad I don't get paid until like August I want to back this at the $75 level so bad.

Xbox One over PS4, that's interesting. I have to wonder if Microsoft is putting some funding in, otherwise I don't see why you would go with the console with the lower install base.

EDIT: Xbox One is listed under the "Supported By" section, so I guess that means Microsoft has a hand in it.

Harlan is a big prickly porcupine jerkbag with a heart of gold. The only reason he's an asshat is that he cares too much. This is my opinion after I talked to him for a very long time about the game he helped write that one time. I will defend him quite violently if it comes to it. Also, he said I was a very intelligent young lady and that it was a true pleasure talking to me, so, yes. I will fight you, and many people, about Harlan.

I wonder how much time they'll have to spend dredging through teh console wars garbage complaints about it being listed as to the xbox one and not PS4.

Though it would be very problematic for them if a PS4 version is one of the hidden stretch goals, imo.

edit: there was a graphic that showed fuzzy stretch goals after the $1.9 million mark... or at least I saw one earlier today.

Nah you can sit without feet. It means he doesn't have a butt. He's probably got some fancy cyborg butt that doesn't let him sit.
