In honor of Canada Day I am revisiting the craziness that is your football league, as chronicled by Tim Tebow.

Let me tell you about St-Jean-Baptiste

St-Jean-Baptiste takes place every June 24th, a whole week before Canada Day, and is Quebec's national holiday. It's way more widely celebrated here even though both days are holidays.

So tomorrow I'm helping a friend move because over here, Canada Day is moving day.

A few years ago, I was up visiting a friend in Quebec City. We arrived in town on St. Jean-Baptiste, and were also there for Canada Day. The latter was super weird, being from Atlantic Canada where Canada Day is a huge celebration. Basically, the day was commemorated by most things being closed, and ... actually, that was it.

I like the Acadian (Atlantic Canadian french) version of things, where we have huge celebrations on Canada Day, and then have another huge celebration on the Acadian National Holiday (August 15th).

Oh fuck do Canadian's actually call sofas (aka couches ) Chesterfields? I'd come across that word as a regional dialectal variant (I have weird hobbies.) in North America but I've yet to meet or know of anyone who actually uses it.

Depends on the region but I've definitely heard it used.

if it's a chesterfield, it's a chesterfield. otherwise it's a couch. it is not a common thing. it would be like assuming all americans call pop "coke"

  • GundiGundi Serious Bismuth Registered User regular
But a bunch of Americans do actually do use Coke as a generic soda term.

  • WybornWyborn GET EQUIPPED Registered User regular
Yeah it's all coke to me

    On some level, at least

I'm kind of coming up short on what else to call the stuff. I guess they call it pop up here.

I've heard the Sleep Country Canada theme, of course, but it never had a foothold in my head

not with this on the airwaves throughout my childhood:

upside, no one in Halifax ever has trouble remembering what to call for a cab

    ever

from what i understand it is a hella regional thing, like Georgia and that's it.

I could be wrong but every time i see it brought up it's like less than 10% of the population.

Canada is the best. I love living here, even though I'm in Newfoundland where the weather is shit from October to June. July is usually nice though.

I like Canada. It's what the US could be if we made better decisions and were more polite.

Also, being in Atlantic Canada, it's super weird hearing people from other parts of the country call their power bill their "hydro" bill.

  • MeldingMelding Registered User regular
cause it's hydro electric energy. I never understood why that was a weird thing to call it for the longest time.

I learned about another lovely Canadian regional beverage recently from LRR. It's called a "Screamer". It's soft serve ice cream with a slushie.

also the power companies often have "hydro" in their names. so you were literally paying "ontario hydro" or whatever.
