It has it's moments. It's the worst written game, but the reveals are good.

Dead Space 3 was a lot of fun but the story kind of sucks. It's definitely worth playing.

I really enjoyed it as a co-op game, but for the solo experience I'd rather play DS2 again.

Not that 3 is bad, 2 is just better.

Dead Space 3 is also significantly less murderporny than Dead Space 2.

I agree with everything said so far... DS3 was a fun game, but the story took a serious hit. That love triangle thing was baad

I'm actually about to play 2 and 3 for the first time in the near future with a buddy of mine for our LP channel so it's kind of convenient to see this thread crop up

generally though if I enjoyed 1 I should like 2/3 to varying degrees?

Well 1 is really a scary survivor horror type game.

2 and 3 do away with the survival horror aspect and go straight for horror action and it's a lot more fun.

The first game is a lot more atmospheric.

I always wonder why they departed from the survivor horror and turned Dead Space 2 into a horror shooter. I assume it's because EA was pushing the studio to make a 'Horror Mass Effect' after the success of ME 2. Honestly, Dead Space is one of my favorite games out there. A little bit too easy with mouse and keyboard, but it still sounds and looks amazing 6 years later. I always made the comment of how Dead Space is Resident Evil 4 if Resident Evil 4 controlled well.

It was just a different style outfit. I'll agree that it was absolutely unnecessary, though.

DS3 is probably the worst of the three, but the DLC makes up for it a lot and if possible, play co-op as Carver. Unless the person you're playing with has never played/seen played any of the games, and make them play as Carver.

Also the studio heads for DS1 got poached by Activision to set up Sledgehammer Games so they could make Call of Duty stuff.

But yeah I think it was because of a push for more sales and a belief that a greater emphasis on action would bring that. Personally I think I enjoyed 2 more than 1, but then 3 felt like it suffered from way too much overhead pressure to do big numbers, and lost almost everything that made the series good.

The original Dead Space was my go-to game for wanting something scary and atmospheric for a long time; Alien: Isolation has replaced it for me in that role. Going through initially I was like "Aaaaah, I have hardly any weapons, and there are strange noises and enemies popping up everywhere!" Going back to the original Dead Space now, I'm like "Heyo, I have weapons! Sweet, sweet weapons that can actually harm enemies! This is great! All you dead alien fuckers are gonna die as many times as it takes for me to get through the level!"

Meanwhile, Dead Space 2 hasn't lost a step for me. It's still being dropped into an action movie, and for everything that goes wrong? In the end, Isaac flies off into space with the girl. It's a fun, fun game, one that ends exactly where it should, and after having read about the sequel's story I have no interest in playing Dead Space 3. I'm pretty good with where story ended in Dead Space 2.

Civics is not a consumer product that you can ignore because you don’t like the options presented.

Pretty much all horror/survival horror games turn more actiony as they go on, because it's a hard sell to make the enemy you learned to beat last time still seem like a genuine threat. Isaac knew how to deal with these things by then, he wasn't going to freak out about them.

A lot of DS3 felt like it was the logical result of features that people kept asking for. Often the people who didn't like/play the previous games. "Why didn't you play Dead Space 2" "I don't like to play games that don't have co-op." "Right, let's add co-op."
Demands for co-op meant that the kind of jump-scares that DS1 used were much harder to arrange, as you couldn't trigger them to certain points and be sure that you'd catch the player.
And having custom weapon building meant that they pretty much had to go with universal ammo, as no-one was going to experiment with a shotgun if it meant losing their inventory of plasma ammo.

Always play as Carver, because that's where the real fun is. Unfortunately that's locked behind co-op (you have to join someone else's game to play as him) but it's otherwise great.

In co-op though, the game is a lot better and makes more sense. Other than the Love Triangle. That never made sense.

So I'm going through Dead Space 2 and

    wow

I forgot just how good this game is. And it feels so good playing this game because I'm currently going through 'The Expanse' series so I'm on a Sci-Fi high atm. I'm enjoying this game so much that I'm just going to go ahead and give DS3 a try. It can't be that bad.

It's not that bad, it's just a disappointment after how good the first two games were.

It was also a huge victim of EA's microtransactions push.

Honestly, the only thing that really annoyed me gameplay-wise with Dead Space 3 was only being able to carry two guns. If there was a third slot, it would've been easier to experiment with the crafting. As it was, I always needed one or both slots filled with reliable weapons.

  • klemmingklemming Registered User regular
DS3 needed a 'one-handed weapons only' slot. I can't think of any reason to make a one-hander after the larger ones become available.

I kinda feel like the whole dismembering thing fell by the wayside a bit in 3. My most effective strategy was to spray minigun/shotgun shots in enemies' general direction till they died. There were only 1 or 2 things I had to worry about cutting up.
