Dutch tv has various feeds but the one reporting 60 dead has been ahead of the rest since i started watching.

There were reports of a hostage situation in a restaurant but that seems to have not been the case.

The initial details suggest a tactic that jihadi propaganda has suggested for several years, with a vehicle ploughing into a crowd. For instance, Inspire magazine – affiliated with al-Qaida – urged the tactic several years ago.

I can't wait until the day where live coverage of these atrocities aren't supplemented by a piece on what Donald fucking Trump has to say on the matter. Every God damn fucking time.

I heard this on the radio and I had hoped it was a tragic accident instead of what I immediately feared.

A magician gives you a ring that, when worn, will let you see the world as it truly is.
However, the ring will never leave your finger, and you will be unable to ever describe to another living person what you see.

New info says he started shooting before driving and the truck was loaded with explosives.

    Edit: confirmed by police officials.

My friends were in France with their baby and I was so relieved to hear they were fine. But it just made me realise there were probably other families with kids there

I also don't understand how it got let through so many checkpoints, there should've been a blanket ban on any vehicles going through, stuff like that has happened before

Ever been to a public gathering in the streets? It's called a crowd for a reason you've got a lot of people in a small area. Doesn't take much driving, sadly.

It ran over a public plaza, which had a large crowd because today was Bastille Day.

Just, fuck, no words. Fucking unbelievable monsters.

It just feels like the scale of these things is increasing and they're so frequent. Like the numbers of victims never used to be so high with terrorist attacks in the 70s-90s.

I was just thinking about this yesterday...

That I have this expectation that there will, sometime within the next month or two, be another tragedy where a bunch of people will die

And it's just going to keep happening...

Automatic weapons and explosives have always had the capacity to inflict this much damage. The difference now is, after a few high profile attacks in recent years, they've shown to be effective terror tactics, which in turn spawns more copies. These attacks are being replicated because of their effectiveness.

These kinds of attacks can't topple nations, but they can cause panic, instability, and economic damage disproportional to the tragedy itself. Terrorists don't need to spend years learning how to hijack a 747, they can just grab a car and a gun.

The police and/or counter terrorist units are always going to clean these things up quickly, but leading the six o'clock news cycle itself is the goal.

Which is also why I find the coverage of these attacks to always be horrendously fucking frustrating

Showing injuries and bodies and people running and screaming for cover is the absolute worst thing you can do, media

Pushing the agenda of fear and publicizing the name of the killer(s) and their pictures and their manifestos does nothing but promote their goals and make the world worse

Statistically speaking the world has never been better or safer or freer of conflict, and it's important to remember that, but goddamn do I wish the news media would care less about ratings and more about reporting ethics

Also terrorist attacks in the Middle East have had numbers like this for a long time. They just don't get as much attention in the west. We're seeing more global exporting of home grown tactics.

Looks like it's up to 84 now

    Also
French media reported that the killer was known to police but for petty crime, not terrorism. A police source told Reuters that the driver was was a 31-year-old Franco-Tunisian born in Tunisia.

The media's outrage at the propagation of terrorism stops on a fucking dime when they have something to gain from it themselves.
