Help me find a vacuum.

HacksawHacksaw J. Duggan Esq.Wrestler at LawRegistered User regular
I need a vacuum. My apartment is a studio, 450 sq. ft. I live alone, but things can and do get dusty from time to time. I'm looking to buy a new vacuum for my unit because the current hand-me-down one I have sucks.

Or rather, it doesn't suck, which is the problem. I'm not emotionally attached to it, so getting it repaired isn't something I care to do. Can anyone recommend me a good, small-ish vacuum for my unit that won't break my bank account in half? Are Dysons still good, or are they considered overpriced trash these days?

I'd like to spend no more than $300.

I have this. I like it. It's probably not worth $300.

I got my dyson as a refurb from woot.com. I like it, and it does a good job on my place.
I'd suggest keeping an eye on them, since they seem to have vacuums at good prices fairly regularly.

It's sold out now, but they had a handheld dyson for 80 bucks earlier. http://home.woot.com/offers/dyson-dc56-handheld-vacuum-white-26?ref=hm_cnt_wp_14_63
Probably be ideal for a small apartment where you just need to suck some dust now and then. It's listed as around $200 new on amazon

Shark's are solid. I have a Navigator. Easy to clean and it pulls up all the dust and cat hair in our place really well

I've got an older model in this line, and it's still working solidly after a bunch of years. Mine's got the pad for hardwood floor vacuuming / dusting, can be converted into a canister with wand, etc.

Honestly there are good vacuums at every level. Hoover wind tunnel is pretty solid for under 100 bucks. I had it for my singleton time and it worked well and the retractable coord is amazing.

Best vacuum for under 100 bucks.

Cordless lynx is pretty great. About $100-$130 on sale. Great for dust and easy to move around, since there's no cord.

We've had the Shark Navigator (or a similar model) for about the three years now, and it's been great. We have three (previously four) cats and a dog, and the thing still goes strong after this long.

Edit: this site loves it too. They're like the Wirecutter for home products.

If you're at all interested in robot vacs, I've heard really good things about Anker's robovac, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than Roombas at $200. I haven't personally pulled the trigger on one yet, but all the continued good reviews are really tempting me.

I have a Dyson DC45, which is a handheld. It's perfect for apartments or condos.

Super convenient, vacuums well, battery lasts long enough for a thorough vacuuming.

It was $500 CDN when I got it, so that specific model may be outside your budget (Depending on how much the exchange hosed me when I got it, anyway), but a cordless Dyson is a pretty solid buy.

We have an old dyson, it works very well -- I'm sure there are others out there that remove dirt as well and cost less, but ours is 10+ years old now, still going strong, and the only bit we've needed to replace was the hose which was incredibly easy to find a replacement for because Dyson have been making basically the same vacuum for a long time. It's built to have all the bits where dirt goes disassembled and cleaned and reassembled, which is something I appreciate.

I didn't mention it because of the budget. We just got one with the fluffy head. It is indeed amazing.

I just realized with this post. I own 4 vacuums. I need to sell the ones I have in storage.

The vacuum repairman reddit threads are really helpful when buying a vacuum.

I have a miele homecare vacuum that kicks ass. It's probably more than you want to spend/overkill for you though.

but still, those reddit threads have decent info for anyone researching vacuums.

Miele's are worth every penny, especially if you have anyone with allergies or asthma in the house.

I too have been looking for a replacement vacuum. This Miele intrigues me since i've been wanting to get a beast vacuum as an investment. I can't see myself dropping $1k on a vacuum, but are the ones in the $500 range still good?

I have the quartz and it's great, you just lose out on the powered broom accessories. You can still get ones that have brushes powered by the air, which works fine, to be honest. If you're all carpet and/or have heavy pet hair, investing in the upscale model may be worth it. If you're mostly hard floors, not much point.

Not really? Mine is the simplest thing to change.

If you go to a vacuum brick and mortar store that's a licensed Miele dealer, you can get the homecare editions. They come with the powered broom accessory. I think mine was around $600.

For carpet I highly recommend the powered brush, personally.

It's actually really easy? Also, keeps me from having to deal with the dirt on emptying. I just pull the nice soft bag out and dump it in the trash. This only happens once every few months, so it's no big deal. If you have bagless, all those wonderful allergens just pop back in the air when you dump it.

Ive been using it for over a year and it does the job well. We are half hardwoods and half carpet at 1
