Just played Red Dragon Inn for the first time last night. It's got some fun flavor and I could feel my inner munchkin coming back out but does it have lasting play value? Would I need to buy half of the expansions to make sure it stays interesting? I already have X-Wing as far as perpetual purchases go.

Holy crap. Arboretum came Friday and we hit or first 3 games in today and that game is BRUTAL. It's like the hand tension of Lost Cities to the nth degree. Every single turn is impossible because your entire hand is either cards you need but can't play yet, or cards that score your opponent a ton of points. It's super good but man I want expecting it to be quite so tense.

My girlfriend and I played two 2-player games of Arboretum and we really want to play it with more people because when it's just you and the other person you're hoping for certain cards the whole game and then you get to the end of the deck and you realize you are fucked and it's amazing if a player gets more than a single path scored.

Our second game ended up 10-3, so yea. Our last one though neither of us successfully blocked anything, and it was 28-27. Sometimes you eat the bar, sometimes the bar eats you.

When I did a GIS for just "Yomi" I got a bunch of unrelated anime.

Of the twenty characters in the game, six of the characters are female. Depending on how you count, somewhere from two to five of the female characters are boob-centric.

It is the MEANEST game about trees and I love it. And it is meaner the less players you have, because you have so much more info. I'm fine with those 10-3 scores, they are the result of brutal and bloody battle. Super happy my copy came in, this is one of very few games I can think of where after a learning game my partner said "lets go again" rather than "I'm good for now"

So the new Sky-Scraper appears to be categorically better than old Sky Scraper, as far as Sentinels goes. Even if you have a pretty terrible hand - and I did - the new Huge power enables you to throw vampires and dinosaurs and whatever at guys, and that's phenomenal.

The old Sky-scraper was pretty awesome in the first place. Her Link cards were just weird enough that it short-circuited a lot of villain abilities in unusual ways. I've yet to try the new one.

I really didn't think the original recipe Sky-Scraper was all that good unless you had someone feeding her cards or time to set up, and you don't always have that. Some of the links (Aggression Modulator being a favorite) are very strong, but mostly they're specific enough in their applications and diverse enough that you have to draw the right ones for the situation. I really didn't buy into her as good until this version became available.

Then you just clear for Sonic to all the things. I probably wouldn't want to use her against Spite in a target-poor Environment, but even then, you've got the Tiny power if you set up links, and it's real good. New Huge power is probably the second-best environment management power in the game; Omnitron's is still better.

Still interested in the new damage Visionary and the new Fanatic because there are some really sneaky tricks available to the latter, but I had to leave the local Meetup's mini-convention around 6 tonight and so I only got one round of Sentinels in.

Did get to try a number of games I haven't before including Bloodborne, the new Mansions of Madness, and City of Spies: Estoril 1942. Bloodborne was better than I was expecting, given what you guys had to say about it, but I'm not sure the upgrade cards were that well designed given the way the game actually works. Mansions is pretty good and I rather liked City of Spies, fwiw.

I would always use Skyscraper against Spite, at least vanilla version. Being able to play two Link cards per turn without any additional cards needed pretty much nullifies that crazy drug that sends permanents back to your hand. You WANT your Link cards to do that! :D

        So I got my Doomtown!

My brother-in-law played Sloane and I took the Law Dogs for the tutorial game. We're kinda getting the hang of it. We kinda got trigger happy in the second game and had an early shoot-out in the Town Square. He lost.

        Stuff we did wrong
        - Supposed to discard a card before drawing up to five at Sundown
        - Bullet bonus only applies to the shooters; the rest of the posse just count as one stud/draw each. We added everything up.

In the second game apparently neither of us drew any deeds, because we spent the first turn kind of twiddling our thumbs before he got antsy and moseyed to the Town Square and prompted a gunfight. What's the correct play in such a scenario (no deeds, no money, expensive goods and dudes in a hand)?

My wife and I started Pandemic: Legacy a couple weeks ago, playing two characters each.

We went 3-1 in our first four games, and have had a great string of luck: only a handful of cities had an outbreak in the first four games, and we even managed to notch seven disease eradications across those four games. Then, the night before last, we tried our hands at April.
We went in with zero funding. I actually knew the plot twist that awaited us in April, having had at least some of the big moments of the game spoiled. Our game went very smoothly. The Quarantine Specialist kept CodA (yellow) in check while the Generalist, the Medic, and the Researcher targeted the other three diseases. Red and blue got cured without much ado. After the second epidemic and the introduction of the Faded, Lima quickly became City Zero with three Faded figures, but constant use of quarantines maintained an uneasy status quo in South America and Africa: two yellow cubes in Johannesburg, three yellow cubes in Khartoum, one yellow cube in Lagos, three yellow cubes in Mexico City, and three yellow cubes in Los Angeles, but no other Faded figures on the map.

Then the third and fourth epidemics got drawn at the same time, leading to a pair of unpreventable outbreaks in Hong Kong and Essen. But still yellow was held in check.

Six military bases were built. Blue was cured. Red was cured. But very few black city cards had been seen; most are stubbornly clustered at the bottom of the player deck, and the rest are spread across all four players.

On her turn, the quarantine specialist Shares Knowledge with the Generalist in Delhi, giving the Quarantine Specialist a fourth black card. The researcher had two more black cards. The black disease had been upgraded twice so that it could be cured without an action; as soon as the researcher's turn came, she would be able to pass one card to the quarantine specialist and that would be a win. We only had to survive through two infection steps.

The quarantine specialist draws three infection cards. Lima is one of them; the quarantine of City Zero is lifted. The situation on the board looks ugly, but stable. We just have to get through the medic's turn.

The medic takes four actions, treating a collection of red cubes. We worry that the Faded in Lima are no longer quarantined, but the medic has no way to reach Lima. The medic draws her first player card. And then the second player card drawn...and it's the fifth Epidemic.

A card is drawn off the bottom of the infection deck. It's Lagos. Three Faded are added to Lagos, and it's an outbreak. The Faded appear in Kinshasa and Sao Paulo, and the quarantine marker is removed from Khartoum.

We shuffle the sixteen infection cards and draw four off the top.

Lagos again. Outbreak. More faded in Kinshasa and Sao Paulo. Khartoum falls to the Faded and chain outbreaks. The quarantine of Johannesburg falls.
Johannesburg. The Faded have taken over all of Africa.
Lima. Outbreak. The Faded spread through western South America. Quarantines are broken in Mexico City and Los Angeles.
Los Angeles. Outbreak. Mexico City and Lima chain outbreak. Faded appear throughout the U.S., popping up in Miami, San Francisco, and Chicago. Game over.

In one infection step, we went from one Faded city to more than a dozen Faded cities. We were literally one action from victory; one action that was the difference between a localized concern and a intercontinental pandemic.

To a pretty large extent, it depends on what your deck is trying to do. Some are all about getting into gunfights often, some are about avoiding it. The thing about Doomtown is that there's a lot of strategies that are available, but a general rule of thumb is that you want to avoid gunfights unless you have a reason to get in them, and/or you think you've got a pretty good chance at winning. A single gunfight can decide the game one way or another, so don't get into them lightly. If you think he's leading up to some job from town square, you could move your own guys in to try to bluff him down, but a gunfight then could be a bloodbath. If you think he's just messing with you, then feel free to stay home.

edit:: ps, I am not an expert, but I've played a couple times.

The typical game of Doomtown if you're playing right is a period of marshalling your forces, jockeying for position (or trying to out-econ one another), followed by a big gunbattle as soon as one (or both!) players feel they have a decisive advantage.

If you're playing it wrong, you start by getting into a battle, losing half your guys, and then struggling to do anything at all to stop the inevitable loss.

So is having a Deed-less starting hand akin to being Manaflooded/Manascrewed in Magic? Should I have used my Grifter's boot ability at the start of the game?

So is having a Deed-less starting hand akin to being Manaflooded/Manascrewed in Magic? Should I have used my Grifter's boot ability at the start of the game?

Sort of. It's not as bad as being mana screwed because you still have dudes on the board (especially as Sloane, because your win condition is Allie and your home ability). Ideally you'd like to have a good cost:income ratio deed like Circle M Ranch, Jackson's Strike, Pat's Perch or Yan Li's Tailoring in your opening hand, but it's not vital.

If you're stuck with unplayable cards, cycle one a turn at Sundown and let your home income trickle in. If you're Law Dogs, start tossing out bounties that you can use later. As Sloane, think about pressuring town square, but don't risk Allie or over-extend.

My memory of the teaching decks is that only Morgan has enough money, but Sloane can get by on not very much.

Well, one of my friends had to work late (restaurant and someone quit without warning), so we never ended up starting Legacy, just got in one game of practice pandemic. We lost. Horribly. As one does.

We did get 2 diseases cured before the entire middle east and southern asia wiped us out in a massive chain outbreak, so we got that going for us, which is great.

Some of my nerd crew were at a loose end last night, so four of us got together and played a game of Eclipse!

The setup did indeed take bloomin' ages, so I'm glad I took the threads advice and got started before folks arrived. Understandably took a while for everyone to grok the rules and of course some pretty big blunders were made along the way. Two of us upgraded ships with shiny systems without enough juice to actually power them... I'm sure there's plenty of rules we've misinterpreted or just missed completely, I'll have to have another read through of the manual now I've had a game to refer to.

We didn't actually manage to finish, since 1am rolled around pretty quick. Ended up stopping 3 rounds away from the end, this combined with our piss poor play meant that no-one had actually attacked each other directly. Everyone still enjoyed it though, so I'm sure it'll get played again very soon. With the four of us knowing the rules pretty well, I don't think it'd take long to get another two noobies or so up to speed.

The board space did feel pretty crowded even with just the four of us, both in terms of gameplay and actual table space. Things must get pretty hairy with 6 players! It was interesting how two sides of the galaxy looked very different in terms of hexagon layout. One side with lots of empty space, spreading out into the 3 hexes with lots of walled off corridor-like areas. The other was just one contiguous space, with connections all over.

What with exploration, research and player interaction being random I can really see how each game will be very different from the last.

TLDR; Eclipse is hard, but fun!

          Pandemic: Legacy - July report.
Early July: The search for the Virologist.

Heading into the month of July, despite drawing a Blue COdA, we've managed to keep the spread of the disease limited to its original range across Europe and North America largely through vicious application of Quarantines on faded cities and not a small amount of luck. Chicago had remained Faded-free right up until setup for the month of July, but by the time we drew our 9 infection cities, we knew we were in trouble: 2 Faded in Chicago, and 3 in neighbouring San Francisco. We separated the two with a roadblock, and severed the connections between Asia and San Fran so that the Faded there didn't spread to the panics and riots of Asia, which has been in flames since May.

Atlanta still stood, a research center in a faded city, a location for a possible search. We began there - and the RNG favoured us, putting the Quarantine specialist first with enough blue cards that we found our person of interest on the second players turn. Our first objective achieved!

Unfortunately, that was the last favour the RNG gave. The first Epidemic came in Montreal; the second was Atlanta. North America was a swarm of faded cities, and unlike previous games, we simply couldn't keep them at manageable levels. The first outbreak chain swept the board of our carefully placed quarantine markers. The second burned the CDC in Atlanta to the ground and spread the Faded to Los Angeles, Miami, and Mexico.

The third outbreak chain lost us the game.

We were basically never in the hunt for another objective. The player draw deck was capricious, and there was no obvious cure for any disease until the game was already all but lost. The little fortune we had was that the infection didn't spread further - only spreading rioting throughout North America, and giving us our first collapsed city in Montreal. The game had given us our virologist swiftly, but had come back almost as fast, slapping us down almost before the game could do real and lasting damage across the board.

Late July: Now I have a paramilitary escort, Ho ho ho.

After that ugly affair, the second half of the month gifted us with perhaps the easiest setup yet seen. Only two faded populations, 1 in New York and 2 for Paris. No Yellow cubes at all; 4 Black (fully researched) cities clustered around our research center in Baghdad and a pair of Red infection cities at our research center in Shanghai.

With the largest infection coming from the weakest threat, the soldier shredding through Faded cities like a scythe through wheat, and the player deck offering up obvious sets in convenient progression, there was little to trouble us as we set about achieving objectives. Yellow was cured and eradicated before it grew beyond a single city; black kept popping up, but rarely troubled as it could be cleared from a location with a single action; and Red never infected beyond the confines of those initial 2 cities. There was but a single outbreak in the entire game: Chicago, on the last draw before the winning turn. In the long term, the effect should be all but negligible.

Overall, a loss and a win. But the loss, while bad, was actually so crushing it didn't actually do as much damage as it could of if it had dragged out. And the win was big enough that we could afford a few more pieces of equipment, which could be key in the long term. Plus we got a Virologist out of Atlanta just days before the city burned to the ground. All up, I'm calling it a net win.

          Intense.
Blue C0dA seems like the absolute worst. My group managed to go the entire year without any research stations burning down but when you get blue I guess it probably can't be avoided.

This is where P:L really gets interesting. Looking forward to the next few months!

Guys I'm in the mood for a good one player game to hold me over until my game nights. I used to do Mage Knight (still awesome) but want something a little lighter I think. Any suggestions?
