Welcome to the Nintendo 3DS thread!

Behold the New Nintendo 3D!

XOqSzL0l.jpg

The "New Nintendo 3DS" has been announced. Short, but sweet details below:

Slimmer design

Faster CPU

Wider field of view for 3D

Micro SD Card slot

Better quality screens
new Nintendo 3DS has custom faceplates (the XL does not)

And here's a quick video to prove it.

This is the thread for general 3DS discussion. To keep the conversation from getting too busy, try to look for other threads before posting about something in here. For example, the eShop Thread is a good place to talk about Nintendo digital store. Big game releases like Mario Kart or Zelda also tend to have their own threads. There's no hard rule against discussing those games in here, but this is a nice place to talk about smaller titles that would be unable to sustain their own threads, and obviously those larger games can easily crowd everyone else out. Finally, don't be discouraged from making game-specific threads if you feel it warrants attention. This is sort of a catch-all thread.

I'm going to talk about The Switch...

The switch I made from a regular XL to the n3DSXL that is. It was a wonderful choice! I use the 3D tons more than I used to thanks to that stable 3D stuff. It's pretty great. The only slight regret I have is that I got my new XL a week before they announced the sexy looking Pokemon SuMo one... The Galaxy model is great, and I love it but I would much rather have picked up the Pokemon one =/

Not to discuss the Switch, but to look at the ongoing vitality of the 3ds: I don't think the 3DS will cease to be too soon. The Switch isn't going to have a hefty battery life, it sounds like, and meanwhile the 3DS has a massive game library and will probably continue to get games for awhile.

What is this I don't even.

Don't get me wrong, the 3DS had a great run, but sales are running out of gas quick and that's even after piles of new models. Surprises could always happen but I'm not holding my breath.

    Mario Kart 7 - 13.94 million pcs.
Pokémon Omega Ruby & Pokémon Alpha Sapphire - 13.18 million pcs.

Tomodachi Life - 5.30 million pcs.
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon - 5.03 million pcs.

They did pretty well, comparing like-for-like though.

    Pokemon DP - 18.23 million
    Pokemon XY - 15.64 million
    Pokemon BW - 15.58 million
    Pokemon ORAS - 13.18 million
    Pokemon HGSS - 12.72 million
    Pokemon B2W2 - 7.97 million
    Pokemon Platinum - 7.69 million

Animal Crossing: WW - 11.74 million
Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 10.34 million

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - 5.07 million
The Legend of Zelda: OoT3D - 4.52 million
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - 2.6 million
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - 2.51 million
The Legend of Zelda: MM3D - 2.03 million
The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes - 1.14 million
(Not sure about Hyrule Warriors' sales)

Notable that overall, Zelda was a more active franchise and sold far better on 3DS than DS. Over 10.2 million vs. 7.67 million.

Kirby Super Star Ultra - 2.36 million
Kirby: Triple Deluxe - 1.78 million
Kirby: Squeak Squad - 1.6 million
Kirby Mass Attack - 1.06 million
(Can't find good info on Robobot in the short term, had promising initial sales in Japan)

Didn't look hard for up to date sales for Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon, but it did poorly, and Awakening is pretty well known to have saved the series.

    To be fair of course:

New Super Mario Bros. - 30.80 million
    Super Mario 64 DS - 11.03 million
    Super Mario 3D Land - 10.81 million
New Super Mario Bros. 2 - 10.39 million

Is that a parody, or is that actually the game name?

If it really is named Monster Hunter Double Cross, it better have some sort of payday betrayal system.

It might actually hurt switch sales in Japan.

The main story probably ham-handedly features some sort of throw away double cross by an npc that won't matter because no one is reading the story text because let's be honest. . .There are monsters to hunt who reads this shit anyway?

edit: unless there's a switch port. That is a possibility.

While you'd think so, but console sales are critical for the long-term health of a platform. If platform sales die, publishers are less likely to put out new games. If there are less games, players are less likely to keep their ears out for new games and they'll move onto something else. It's an anti-halo effect.

The only platform I can think of that continues with good software support after hardware has died is Vita, and that's largely because Sony's made it ridiculously easy to port things over from PS4, plus other quirks of the Japanese market I don't fully understand.

It did mean I went through most of The Thousand Year Door without realising that 'X-Nauts' was supposed to be a pun.

    I only just got this.

I still don't. What is a cross naut? Is it supposed to reference croissant or something?

    Cross Naut

    Naught Cross

    Naughts and Crosses

Which I believe you foreign types call tic-tac-toe.

Way too convoluted to be funny.

I tried it last year shortly after receiving my N3DS and it would never connect. Has Nintendo fixed OS X compatibility in a system update?

I have never heard it called Naughts and Crosses... Must be a weird British thing...

Aww, that's lame. I assumed that since it was a standard protocol it'd just work with everything, but looks like Nintendo only tested their implementation against Windows. I don't have a N3DS to try with, but some Linux users have kinda sorta managed to connect for the duration of a single file transfer from the command line.

    Sorry! >_<

I imagine we're hearing more from Nintendo about Wii U ... well, mostly just about 3DS titles this year. Interested in seeing where that tank game goes.

Been seeing lots of streetpasses in Japan where the person is playing Monster Hunter Stories. Making me jealous!
