I would have thought our defense against Donald Trump would be our ability to elect third party candidates.
Otherwise we're just as likely to get a Donald Trump win on the back of a 50% dick vote.

I would have voted for Jon Snow, the True King of the North, personally.

But yeah, you are right, they would have to be in parliament before they could become in charge.

The US election has third party candidates too, they just have no chance. Preferential voting is probably a better hat to cast if you want to pin it on only one aspect of our system.

Me and mine are good up in Auckland. Baby got woken up, but the adults in the house felt nothing.

Tsunami warning has been lifted for our area, but we're far enough inland and high enough up that we wouldn't have needed to evacuate.

@Fishman was closer and Wellington is alertly apparently still getting aftershocks. Hope you guys are OK down there

I'll never vote Greens as long as they completely oppose nuclear technologies.

that is a weird thing to hang your hat on

I mean, I thoroughly agree with you. Nuclear would be the best option for Australia. But only if we'd started rolling it out 20 years ago.

there is little point in Australia investing in nuclear at this point. The investment would be massive, the infrastructure required would be huge, and by the time it was all said and done it would likely no longer be the best option.

    Try this 10 question quiz - https://ldp.org.au/quiz/

I mean, I'm not saying you'll agree with the Greens on everything but if nuclear is really the only thing you disagree with, and you agree with the rest of all of their policies, then surely it is worth compromising that one nuclear belief in order to not compromise all of the others that the other two major parties ignore?

If you don't agree with other of their policies then that's a totally different scenario, but if you do, then surely the party that represents 95% of your views is better than one of the other two parties that might be 20% tops. Because if your views align the Greens then 20% is the best you're getting from the other two.

I agree they're stupid about this, but they are the most viable party that shares about 90% of my views, so that's good enough for me to support.

Easy for me to say since I can't vote, but if I could it'd be the Greens for me, faaaaaaaaar above either of the two major parties.

The Greens want to shut down the Lucas Heights reactor because it is nuclear.

    It makes radioisotopes for medicine...

I don't disagree with your nuclear opinion. Just that it's about the only area i disagree with the Greens on, and i disagree with Labor and Libs in many more ways.

Having a party with influence that shares 100% of my beliefs is unlikely. I count myself lucky that there's one that shares 90%.

I am OK with voting green despite how much I disgree with their policy on nuclear power/medical uses. It's useful to have a voice that at least brings issues relating to it into parliament, and they're never going to actually get the serious stuff done that they want to.

If the greens were a major party that could actually get something like the Lucas Heights reactor shut down, then I'd be concerned indeed. But for now they have my vote.

The Greens are never going to be more than kingmakers and that's perfect. Kingmaking is enough to get their policies taken into account without allowing them to do any of the really extreme stuff.

But they're proper socialists (in that there is near constant infighting amongst the ranks)! They didn't have anyone on the ballot in my area to vote for last time so I made the Greens my first preference instead of my second.

You just need to be better than a blank ballot spot.

I mean, you're running for a minority of minorities, it's not as if you'd become an MP.

Also I find it way easier to avoid racism/bigotry/sexism/transphobia/homophobia/god-knows-what-else on IG than any other social media site (except the forums if you count them as social media).

Not quite the same unfortunately. I use reddit for access to a bunch of articles on wonky topics that interest me. IG is a great vehicle for certain things (cat videos) but it doesn't scratch this particular itch.

Perhaps if I just treat reddit like YouTube and religiously avoid the comments section...
