I'm stuck on the make your own nomination.
Should I do "Better Than The Sum Of Its Parts" for Alpha Protocol, "Still The Greatest Racing Game Ever Made" for Burnout Paradise, "Dead Before Its Time" for Super Monday Night Combat, "I Played This On Console But It's Still Really Good Here Too" for Fallout 4, or "Best Game I Wish My PC Could Run" for Deus Ex Mankind Divided

I have Tales of Symphonia in my cart because it's the only Tales game I've ever beaten. I'm looking at Tales of Zestiria, was it any good? I've burned out on more modern tales games because they keep getting more and more complex, with systems on top of systems, and tons of missable/one chance items or scenes.

    8.

    Except on its side.

The Secret World is mostly very fun (It's super weird to have questgivers who have, like, legit funny dialogue), but the controls sure are a bit jank for some of the puzzles they have you do.

Stealth in the game is... not good.

Platforming is also not very good.

As far as puzzles where you have to figure out things... they do actually expect you to use the Internet. Y'know, like visiting The Orochi Group's corporate website.

I've played through as a member of each faction so I know that there are great points to every single faction.

But Illuminati really have the best NPCs.
Their interlude missions are kind of lackluster compared to the other factions, though.

    Test of Time: Doom II
Before It Won An Award: Hostile Waters. I don't actually have any idea if this had a marketing campaign behind it.
Game Within a Game goes to System Shock 2 for the gamepig
Onion Award: Homeworld, that first time through. Yeah. Kharak is burning. Maybe not actual tears (I dunno, it was a while ago, yeah?), but pretty close.
Farm Animal: Squishy the Suicidal Pig, because why not?

The others are pretty hard for me to settle on.

Whoa Dude: I'm not sure yet. Lots of Valve games spring to mind. Maybe some mindbending puzzler.
Hug A Villain is a complete mystery to me.
5 more minutes ought to be a civ game, but I've had that reaction to a bunch of games over the years, and lately it's been Grimrock 2.

edit: I'm stumped on the write-in.

I went with SUPERHOT for the Whoa one

Not necessarily because it had some crazy plot twists or anything, but some of the things you do in that game are real fucking wild, in a narrative sense

One of my favorite bits is how their faction missions intersect. If I remember right, there's one mission
that involves a shady Illuminati meetup in a parking garage. Dragon go in to fuck with the meetup, Lumies go to the meetup to find everything's already fucked and they need to survive, and Templar go in to clean up the mess.

I mean, I'm considering half-life because the first time I played it, I naturally assumed the tram ride was a cutscene

then I jogged the mouse by accident. . .

so I'm reading it as less "plot twisty" and more "some aspect of this game just makes your jaw drop"

and SUPERHOT (from screenshots, gameplay vids) definitely qualifies, though I haven't picked it up yet

Witcher 3 took two of my Steam awards: the crying one and the minigame one

Because no game affected me more emotionally or let me have as much fun with a minigame as The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

(I got around the inability to nominate a game twice by nominating Blood and Wine for the minigame part. I mean it does add a whole new Gwent deck!)

Also I'm stocking up on some games that have been on my wishlist for too long: Hand of Fate, Sublevel Zero, Axiom Verge, This War of Mine, Pillars of Eternity, all at some real steep discounts

This was a good sale for me!

    ok, nominations
The “Test of Time” Award goes to Doom II for being a perfectly solid game with no quirks, era-conventions, or delusions of grandeur. You, an arsenal, and demons.

The “I'm Not Crying, There's Something In My Eye” Award goes to Homeworld 1 for Kharak is burning.

The “Just 5 More Minutes” Award goes to La-Mulana for murkier-than-necessary puzzles. And for keeping me involved for hours outside the game drawing crazy progression maps.

The “Whoooaaaaaaa, dude!” Award goes to Half-Life for that moment during the tram ride when I realized it was all in-game, not pre-rendered nonsense. HL2 and Portal are strong contenders here, but I think they're edged out.

The “Villain Most In Need Of A Hug” Award goes to Portal 2 because I don't look at villains and antagonists that way, and Crippl3's decision seemed reasonable.

The “Game Within A Game” Award goes to System Shock 2 for the gamepig. A simplified Ultima, among a few others. I still wish more games could have been added.

The “I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award” Award goes to Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising. One of my favorite games of all time.

The “Best Use Of A Farm Animal” Award goes to Squishy the Suicidal Pig for being the first game that came to mind. One of the Worms games would be a solid pick here.

The Write-In Award is first re-named Best Immersive Sim and that, clearly, can only go to Deus Ex.

I'm looking forward to the standalone release, which I hear has a lot of editing!
I really like that it allows for a simulation of the feeling of tricking the other player.

I feel like there's a "best deck" for each faction that's satisfying and fun to reach,
but I lost interest after reaching it (after a good deal of fun).

I put Witcher 3 for villain most in need of a hug. They all are. All of them.

And my issue with Gwent was the fact that I have to run all over god damn perdition picking up cards that I'm missing but I beat the guy whose deck is half epics and half Muster cards and my reward for beating him is yet another Poor Fucking Infantry and just no

    no

fuck you and your four Scorch cards

    that is bullshit

It's a CCG where your success at the game is directly proportionate to the amount of money and time you're willing to sink into it

I beat Shadow Complex. That's a good game! I wish it was a bit easier to backtrack though, some sort of fast-travel system. And I got roped into the final confrontation before I got to collect the remaining pickups, so I finished at...86%?
Not quite sure if I want to replay/ng+ it though

Got around to playing through the FFX/X-2 HD remaster, which was my introduction into RPG games. I think I finished it 5-6 times when I was younger and I remember LOVING it.

Now that I'm older I'm still enjoying it, but now I can see where all the complaints about the dialog are. Square-Enix really found a way to write a really good plot, then supplement it with some of the worst dialog and totally whiffing the tone, especially in the second game.

  • discriderdiscrider Registered User regular
    So my nominations:
Test of Time award: Portal Chip's Challenge Sonic 3 and Knuckles
I'm Not Crying, There's Something In My Eye: Depth (being scared as a Diver and crying like a baby counts right?)
Just 5 More Minutes: Invisible, Inc. Too many games fit this however.
Whoa, dude: Tales from the Borderlands
Villain Most In Need Of A Hug: Portal 2
Game Within A Game: Team Fortress 2 has Rock Paper Scissors I dunno
I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award: h a c k m u d, the hacking sandbox where you hack NPCs and players with Javascript for their sweet credits.
Best Use Of A Farm Animal: Goat Simulator Pony Island
Best Game Where You're Trapped Against Your Will With A Pyschopathic Killer: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc.
