but I actually sort of hope not because frankly that's a bad way to go out regardless of who you are.

I revile him for his homophobia and his record on human rights, and we shouldn't forget that socialism means freedom for men, women, LGBT people and so on.

Honestly I'm inclined to trust the reaction of people who actually lived under his rule over some op-ed, and the reaction seems to be nothing short of jubilant.
Castro was kind of benefiting from US hegemony for decades. The embargo allowed him to blame a ton of things that weren't the result of the embargo on America and also gave him cred with people like Hugo Chavez that he exploited.
