I bought a ASUS fx502vm and I installed a crucial mx300 m.2 ssd. I cloned the hdd onto the ssd, but now I am unable to select the m.2 drive as my boot device. Any advice? After cloning I removed the hdd, but then no drives show up.
I have done this before with a regular SSD and I am fairly tech savy, so I thought this would not be a problem. I can see the SSD in my storage and it is labeled OS (F:), but I can still see my hdd as OS (C:) with a Windows icon next to it.
When in bios will the device populate the drive information so you can see the size/model etc?
I've never had much luck cloning primary OS drives and nearly always do a reinstall because of the headaches it has always caused. Even when I get it working, it doesn't work as well as I'd prefer and a reinstall of an OS is like 20 minutes + updates.
Do I need a copy of Windows to do that, or is my copy on the laptop valid for this?
Well it depends on the type of recovery software you got with the laptop. If it's just a restore partition it may be more complicated.

You should be able to put the old drive back in, and download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft. Use that to download a copy of Win10 and make a bootable flash drive to install from. Then put the new m2 in there to start the install.
But like dispatch.o mentioned, please wipe the new drive and start fresh. It's going to be a lot more stable that way.

Windows gets dumb with UEFI sometimes. I have the reverse issue - I got lazy and didn't want to back up some data "normally," so when I got an m.2 drive, I just threw a fresh install of Win10 on it and hoped for the best. now, the m.2 device always shows up, but every now and then, I inexplicably get a long boot cycle, after which the old drive won't show up.
