Let's Watch [MOVIES], In A Theater!

Or in a Theatre. Sometimes maybe even a Cinema.

A Star Wars comes out this week, so that's a thing. Even if it's only a Star Wars, not the Star Wars. Just make sure that, when you select your movie house, it's one that still exists and isn't a construction site that's been under construction for almost two years now.

I am so fuckin' hype for Star Wars.

Actually, I'm not, but I bet Wednesday's gonna be fun.

huh for some reason I thought that rogue one was coming out a few days earlier than that for the US. I must have misread something

  • SabreMauSabreMau ネトゲしよう 판다리아Registered User regular
It's a Friday opening date, even though pretty much every major theater will be preopening it at 7 PM on Thursday evening, and the box office proceeds from that will be counted as part of Friday's income due to them traditionally being a 12:01 AM "midnight" opening, which eventually got shifted hours and hours earlier but they still think of it as Friday.

Technically the big Hollywood premiere was last night, and there'll be some trade screenings over the next few days (generally invitation-only showings for movie reviewers), but the major kickoff is Thursday night.

What's up with those cinema numbers for La La Land

  • LalaboxLalabox Registered User regular
    cheers that makes sense

just went and bought tickets to the midnight screening this wednesday/thursday 12:01 of the 15th. Guess Disney just likes Australia or something (well, actually I think that Aus just has releases on thursdays, but still)

I'm surprised I could get tickets so late, especially considering how big episode 7's thing was last year, but i guess it isn't part of the main series and isn't quite as big of a cultural event

Limited release. They do a very exclusive run in five theaters in New York and Los Angeles and play to packed houses before expanding it wider later on. They do it to gain buzz among the film elite who will then write glowing things that can be put in the advertisements.

apparently Maona comes out on boxing day so turns out Disney actually hates us nbd

It feels odd to not care about a Star Wars movie

I am, however, still hyped for the Star Wars movie, a year away

I watched TFA the other night and it's still rad as fuck

  • SabreMauSabreMau ネトゲしよう 판다리아Registered User regular
I'm more hyped that Ocean Waves might show up at the local limited-run arthouse theater in two weeks. That's one of the Ghiblies I've never seen yet.

My New Year's resolution is to keep a fucking film diary. Not because I see so many films in a year that I can't keep track, but because I see juuuuust few enough that I don't remember them all. Having a kid really sucks the ability to just go to the theater whenever out of your life. Then again, in about 8 years I can start showing her some really fun stuff, like Jaws and Aliens!

  • UnbreakableVowUnbreakableVow Registered User regular
I used to go to the theaters like once a week if not more, and I'd just see whatever

This year I've seen five films in theaters

    10 Cloverfield Lane
    Zootopia
    Captain America: Civil War
    Kingsglaive
    Doctor Strange

    And I liked them all!

It'll be six, possibly seven by year's end, filling out with Moana and Assassin's Creed

On the one hand, that's way less movies than before

But if you look at it another way, this could be the first year where I like every single movie I saw in theaters

Arrival was good, have you no plans to see it, or is it not your jam?

  • UnbreakableVowUnbreakableVow Registered User regular
I have no clue what Arrival is

I have heard talk of it in the movie thread and that is it

People saying it's creepy and stuff though? If it's a horror movie, definitely not a fan

It's some sci-fi movie about aliens that's the complete opposite of Independence Day. I think. Stuff doesn't blow up in huge splosions and there's more talking and thinking than shooting and punching.

I could be into that, assuming it's not heavy handed and beating you over the head with its message like District 9

  • Blake TBlake T Do you have enemies then? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.Registered User regular
It is definitely not a horror movie.

Arrival is this year's fall sci-fi movie with an emotional core (think Gravity, Interstellar, The Martian). First contact movie where Amy Adams plays a linguist who has to figure out how to communicate with the aliens. Based off a short story and is very, very good.

    District 9 was really good

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
District 9 loses points for just ditching its mockumentary premise halfway through the film but it is still one of my favorite sci-fi flicks

    CYpGAPn.png
  • PinfeldorfPinfeldorf Yeah ZestRegistered User regular
The moral of District 9 was to not let South Africa be in charge of first contact, I think. Extrapolating on that, we probably shouldn't let humanity be in charge of first contact, but that's a whole other issue, entirely, as I'm not sure dogs are up to the task.

I really want to see Office Christmas Party

I kind of want to but I might see it for free or something when it pops up on Prime

I do want to see Arrival but it's not really worth hauling my sorry ass to the theatre and walking home half asleep

basically there are a lot of films I feel if they end up on Prime I will watch them since I have nothing better to do at 2am than play wow and watch movies

If you ever see a movie with a lot of buzz behind it come out in December in limited release, it's cause they want it to count as a 2015 movie so it's eligible for the Oscars

That's why Scorsese has a new movie that didn't get a trailer until like 2 weeks ago and is technically coming out in 2 weeks

    6F32U1X.png
  • pookapooka Registered User regular
i am not going to overhype Arrival, but if you're at all interested in seeing it in theaters, it benefits from the scale of a movie screen. i recommend it as worth seeing in that environment.

Sometimes. American Sniper got a limited release on 12/25/14 with a full release 1/16/15, The Revenant went limited on 12/25/15 and expanded 1/8/2016, though La La Land is apparently due to get a nationwide expansion by Christmas anyway, before the new calendar year.

I am going to see rogue one probably next month
I do want to see Arrival on a screen since a tv doesn't have the scale that would make me really appreciate it

When American Sniper came out I really kept remembering the really odd conversation of He's an asshole that was often passed around when you brought up his name while in Iraq
I did not have any interest in seeing it because well I know it's shit and you have to live with what you did and it's hard to relate to other people over it and even harder to keep it locked away

I'll probably be seeing Rogue One on the 3D IMAX screen after-hours Wednesday night. Just hoping it doesn't have the queasy shakycam parts that Doctor Strange did. Had to clean up after someone puking on the wall for that one.
