Verizon to open/unlock its network and phones!

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Verizon Wireless said Tuesday that it would allow any device or software to run on its wireless network as it heeds the industry call for more openness.
Verizon Wireless, jointly owned by Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) and Vodafone Group PLC (VOD), said it will publish early next year technical standards for the development community, which are necessary for designing software, applications and devices that can run on its network. The carrier said that any device that meets the minimum technical standards will be activated on the network. It hopes to have new devices and applications available to customers by the end of next year.

    I'm not jumping for joy just yet. There are a lot of little catch-alls they put into their press release which could really sour the seemingly altruistic commitment.

    I'm pretty sure they just mean "as long as your device actually functions." Ars Technica has a good piece on it.

    I'm happy about it. I wonder how long until I can buy an iPhone type thing that charges per-minute rather than at a gazillion dollars a month.
