Star Wars PBP OOC - GIve me liberty or give me death!

So it turns out that the new Star Wars RPGs are good times. I am planning a campaign, and you guys get to be the first to give it a go!

Anyway. Age of Rebellion, standard character creation. I'm looking for about five PCs but I am open to flexibility as this seems to be quite a good game for GMs, nice and smooth. No grids, all descriptions because that's easier. Campaign text is below. Make your characters. You know the drill! Oh and btw, you all have to be actual Rebels who want to fight for the cause. No backsliding! It makes me life hard and then I'll swarm you with Super Star Destroyers. You don't want that!

As new Rebel recruits, you have been posted to a base which seems to be little known amongst the Alliance personnel you've dealt with so far. Indeed, it seems to be a posting which very much highlights that the Rebellion is an Alliance rather than a solid structure, as Starshadow Base has been active for many years, but only recently joined the wider Alliance structure. From what you can tell, it's operations were mostly independent, but there has been a request for more personnel in order to expand them and bring it closer into the fold. As a result you will all be following the orders of it's commander, Captain Tyjak Morr, but you've also been told that it's important you represent the Alliance well and foster strong relations. Apparently, Starshadow base mainly focuses on destroying Imperial industrial and pharmaceutical efforts to the Galactic South, as it is situated in the Estan system of the mid rim, where the Rimma and Corellian trade routes cross. Nearby Thyferra, the source of Imperial Bacta, and various Naval Shipyards, are their most frequent targets for destroying Imperial efforts, gathering intel and stealing supplies.

Some data files have been passed to you as followed about the key base personnel, the local system and it's Imperial presence, garnered from Alliance diplomatic observations;
Officers

-Tyjak Morr: Base commander. He's been running it for several years now, what started as a tiny listening post with a single ship hanger has become a space for over a hundred Rebels and their families to launch attacks in the surrounding sector. This is due to Morr, who recruited and trained many of the Rebels at the base. Morr seems to be tough and competent from the diplomatic files, calm and steady in command. He believes very strongly that information and intelligence security saves lives and this is a major reason why he kept Starshadow Base and his Rebels out of the main Alliance for so long, following concerns about leaks. But it seems these must have been alleviated somehow, hence your own posting.
-Sandar Gennik: A Xexto, Sandar Gennik is the commander of Emerald Squadron, the base's main asset and hardest hitting force. Flight Lieutenant Gennik is a veteran fighter and known to be a competitive and energetic ace pilot, encouraging the Squadron to develop their skills in bare knuckle dogfights and strike attacks against Imperial pilots. Gennik is, like all Xexto, known for his almost foolhardy courage and dashing flair and he attempts to bring this behaviour out in his subordinates.
-Whelan Ando: The First Leftenant in charge of Starshadow base's commando group, Ando is a tough, no nonsense woman who plans operations meticulously and is known for her sharp intellect and keen tactical insight.

The Estan System

-Starshadow base, Rebel moonlet outpost, orbiting the small frontier world of Estan V. Estan V is a rocky, wet planet with cool temperatures and extensive forests under an almost constant cover of thick rainclouds, inhabited by a minor population of small, rodent-like species with mostly basic technology and living standards. In their own language they are the Chik, locals (sometimes including the Rebels) refer to them as the Estanians when they are being polite. They do trade some of their resources for more advanced (think 3/4 foot tall Squirrel people) technology, mostly medical equipment, and seem to be quite intelligence and inquisitive. It's moonlet is un-named, assigned only a number of Estan V/II. The planet is also within a large gas and dust cloud which obscures comings and goings to it and it's moons... perfect for Rebel operations, though it does mean that even during full sunlight, Estan V is a rather gloomy, dark place. The base was set up in order to combat Imperial and Imperial contracted slavery efforts in the sub-sector. There are a number of planets within a day's hyperspace travel from Estan V with indigenous populations preyed upon by slavers seeking to fill Imperial demands for work camps across the sector. By striking at these slavers, the Rebels are delaying Imperial production lines and freeing sentient beings rounded up en masse. The Chik themselves were the victims of a few raids, and as a result, they are wary about dealing with outsiders and dislike Imperials rather intensely. They do view the Rebels of Starshadow base positively however, and some have even volunteered to join the fight, where their courage and adaptation to more advanced warfare has been impressive.

-Estan III. A small planetoid with a hyperspace trading station named Freeport City, including a small shipyard, various corporate representatives, criminal groups and a minor Imperial presence mostly made up of ISB agents and a force protection group of Stormtroopers and Navy Shuttles/TIE Squadron. The station is populous enough for Rebel agents to use it as a source of clandestine goods, supplies, information and such without being spotted by the local Imperial garrison if they remain careful. The station is run by a local guilders representative council, but is relatively lawless in practise. Freeport City is very old and nobody knows who originally founded it, but it has various levels beneath the active ones which may contain ancient technology, information and secrets... as well as unpleasant suprises such as alien beasts and environmental hazards. The population is mostly Human and Duros, but almost any alien could be spotted there without batting an eyelid, and there are numerous small but permanent enclaves such as the Bothan and Sullustan Quarters.

-Estan I and II are radiation blasted rocks, Estan III is much the same but is cool enough to set up a trading post at in times long past. There is an asteroid belt between Estan III and the outer system. Estan IV and VI are both gas giants with minor fuel stations owned by groups in the inner system.

Starshadow Base Itself

-Mostly made up of hidden hanger bays, Starshadow Base's builders use the airless moon's high, cave riddled mountains to create a multi-tiered small starship docking facility. Currently the base has enough space for around a dozen large starfighters, or half a dozen with some light freighters, however the facility could be expanded relatively easily given a bit of time and effort. Around a hundred Rebels and their families make this base their home on a permanent basis, and it's from here that they make their fight against the Empire.

-The Starfighter group (Emerald Squadron) consists of a number of pilots, who rotate through the six A3 Nimbus "V-Wings" and the three BTL-A4 "Y-Wings." The station also operates two heavily re-purposed and modified Lambda class Shuttles which it uses to transport commandos and freed slaves, extract critical personnel, transport supplies and so on. Another two A3 V-Wings and 1 Y-Wing are kept in reserve hangers as a parts and spares fleet. This fleet is maintained by the base's mechanical and engineering staff, who double as ground crew.

-The Commando corps consists of one full Commando platoon, with a medical officer, chief sergeant, chief scout, a quartermaster a and communications/intelligence specialist attached

-Beyond the Starfighter and Commando corps are two much smaller sections; Intelligence and Medical. The Medical team is made up mostly of Medical Droids under the supervision of a few actual Medical professionals who are often attached to the commando platoon. The Medical Facility is run by Second Leftenant Doctor Astaria Virr (Human Female). The Intelligence and Communications Section as run by Second Leftenant Rho is made up of a half dozen comms and intel experts who are often off base, either at Estan III or elsewhere, making contact with their spies and intelligence sources. These agents often operate alongside the Commando platoon and the Starfighter Squadron, who they often rely upon for transportation and force protection.

The base includes a large living space for all it's personnel and also for numerous families, as various Rebel persons on site do not have anywhere else for their partners and children to live. This usually totals a few dozen people, some of whom aid in the Rebel efforts where possible, but can't really be considered combatants.

Captain Morr wants to put together a new kind of team, is all you've been told. He wants to transform his force into a new way of fighting, where mixed units of fighter pilots, commandos, spies, technicians and so on can form flexible teams to strike against the Empire and bring it to it's knees. The Alliance is very interested in seeing whether this structural plan will work, so eyes are on you. Good luck, soldier!

    "Gand" Kornay

    latest?cb=20071207161219

    Backstory:
She was supposed to be there.

She was supposed to be back at the hangout on Wroona an hour earlier. Some trivial errand had delayed her return to her friends. She arrived just in time to see the charred wreckage, and a flash of the tell-tale white laminate armor walking away. The pain hit immediately, and faded in time. But what lingered to her were the questions. Why? Her friends were nothing more than agitators and pamphleteers. No-one important. She hadn't even earned her family name yet, still going by Gand, as was the custom of her people. What purpose did our deaths serve?

Before too long, the need for information began to consume her. She began to plot ways of gaining access to Imperial information. And she quickly found that she could not ask for it nicely.

There was a local Imp outpost on the planet she found herself on. Supposed to be a signalling post. Supposed to have messages, transcripts...orders. She hoped she could find something that would be worth the few mercs she had to hire to assist with her plan.

Looking back, there were...elements that could stand to be improved. One of the mercs did not survive the spoiling of the plan by an errant patrol. She had found some information about recent movements in the sector, but nothing to answer her questions.

After the raid was over, one of the surviving soldiers found her. He revealed that he was no ordinary soldier of fortune, but a man of higher purpose. And that her skills in marshaling and leading people to action could be put to use against the Empire. Would she join him?

And that was when life became clear. Her people that left their home-world were considered those of the Findsmen, who scoured the galaxy to hunt prey and bring blessings to her people. She had not thought that path for her; it was beneath her. But now, she had a new understanding. The Empire was to be hunted. She would scour the galaxy to exterminate them. Their death would be a blessing to her people. And she would find the reason why her friends were murdered.

She nodded yes to the man. He smiled. "My name's Devhan. What's yours?"

She waited for a second. The moment was right.

"This one is Kornay", her translation speaker said.

Meet Rika Flynn. The best god damned Pilot this side of Coruscant. An inspiring, hot headed individual that would probably be leading her own squadron if it weren't for her arrogance and other attitude problems.

Regardless when the Rebellion needed a pilot who could fly solo for this squad Rika was the only name worth mentioning for the job.

So I've got a few ideas but I want to know a couple things before I start putting them together,

First, I assume that we'll be doing the kind of stuff described in the OP as this outpost's sort of thing, so a character focused on being a diplomat or a capital ship gunner or tactician might not be ideal to start with? Or would both of those be alright?

Secondly, what is your feeling on Edge of the Empire and Force and Destiny characters? I know you want us to be true Rebels but can they be of the rough-and-tumble or Force-Sensitive variety, or do you want to keep this strictly Rebels Rebelling Rebelliously?

I think you can take races or items from other books, but the careers likely need to be from AoR. That's what I did, as Gands are from the Edge of the Empire book and so far Solar didn't immediately shoot it down.

  • SolarSolar Registered User regular
I'm fine with any species, and any career from Edge of the Empire. Careers from Force and Destiny not as starting careers, but as later ones that could be fine. I am happy for people to play Force Sensitives and Emergents, but it'd be something that develops in play ideally. Unless you have an idea which you really like, in which case put it to me! Rules are there to be broken haha.

A Diplomat would be fine, a capital ships gunner would be less useful but if the skills translate across to gunnery on any ship class that'd be fine, as would a tactician. Making and executing plans is always useful!

Put it like this, the whole point of this being a small, cash strapped outpost is that you guys will need to do a lot of things, and you may find yourself basically being a catch-all troubleshooting gang who need to handle agents, make diplomatic efforts, shoot, steal, fly and generally do all the jobs heroes can be expected to do. I don't see the Rebellion as really being an organisation which gets the resources it wants. It's an insurgency.

I re-read Mao's handbook on guerilla warfare for this :P

    So to vomit out stuff:

The most important thing you probably want in a group is to have every stat covered. Stats are a huge part of your starting character's dice pools and easy growth opportunities. So if we don't have someone with high brawn it's likely going to mean any athletics is gonna be a pain. Even if the person with high brawn isn't trained in it they can still chuck dice around.

Currently we've got an Ace and a Tactician so a next solid buy could be a decently high brawn soldier, a cunning spy or an intelligent engineer.

The gunner spec in ace BTW doesn't rely on being on a capital ship. The specs honestly more about being a large weapon soldier or crack shot in a cock pit. It's a great pick if you're thinking Driver/Pilot are too specific and that the team needs some extra beef.

It'll have two laser cannons, at least medium (possibly heavy, an X-Wing gets four medium cannons after all) and door mounts for either a blaster cannons or ion blaster cannons, based on how it's equipped. Atmosphere only for the door guns obviously.

Sil 3 too, since Sil 4 seems to be for light freighters and such, and the U-Wing's actual silhouette seems to be roughly B-Wing size, which is Sil 3.

Class 1 hyperdrive, little slower and harder to handle than the X-Wing, but tougher and with more hardpoints and system strain for modding and such. You could probably make it fight like an X-Wing if you wanted to use the hardpoint mods that way, like increased speed for example.

    Ak-Jabb, Weequay Soldier

    Background:
Like many Weequays, Ak-Jabb lived the mercenary lifestyle. Guard for the Hutts, bounty hunter, general bruiser. Over time he decided that the lifestyle was not for him. He retired to live in a small farming village along the Correllian Run, away from the galactic civil war, away from criminal enterprises, away from everything.

One day a cell of rebel saboteurs came to his village. Wanting no trouble, the village turned them away, but it was a poorly kept secret that they found sympathy in another nearby farming village. A few days later a major explosion occurred at the starport, destroying a visiting Moff's personal shuttle, staff, and nearly killing the Moff. The day after that, the Empire came to Ak-Jabb's village. Ak-Jabb stayed away, watching from a distance. The villagers gave the Imperials everything they wanted - names and descriptions of the Rebels, and where to find them. Then the Stormtroopers slaughtered the village and razed it to the ground. Witnessing the atrocities of the Empire first hand, Ak-Jabb decided he could not hide any longer. He ran to the nearest speeder and took it to where the Rebels were hiding, helping them set up an ambush for the Imperial patrol.

The next thing he knew he was in the Estan system, at a secret rebel base, being considered for a new team.

    U-Wing stats

    Hull type: Light Dropship/Gunship

    Ship Class: UT-60D (U-Wing)

    Manufacturer: Incom Corporation

Hyperdrive: Class 1 (Backup Class 15)

    Navcomp: Equipped

    Sensor Range: Medium

Ship's Complement: Pilot, Co-Pilot, Door Gunners (minimum 1)

Encumbrance Capacity: 50 (with full passengers and their carried gear)

    Passenger Capacity: 10

    Consumables: 1 month

Cost/Rarity: Probably a fucking lot actually you seen these stats

    Customization Hard Points: 3

    Silhouette: 3

    Speed: 4

    Handling: +1

    Defense: 1/1

    Armor: 3

    Hull Threshold: 18

    System Threshold: 18

    Weapons:
-Forward Mounted Heavy Laser Cannons (Fire Arc: Forward, Damage 6, Critical 3, Range Short, Linked 1)
-Forward Mounted Proton Torpedo Launcher (Fire Arc Forward, Damage 8, Critical 2, Range Short, Blast 6, Breach 6, Guided 2, Limited Ammo 8, Slow Firing 1)
-Port and Starboard mounted gun slots (heavy blaster cannon or heavy ion cannon), un-equipped

Quite the ship, really. Slightly slower than an X-Wing and with less linked cannons, which are really powerful in the hands of the top pilots, but much tougher and with heavier cannons. Looking at other builds online they all seem to go for handling +1, which seems a bit odd except that really the Y-Wing is supposed to be notably slow and such, and that's +0. The U-Wing is never going to be a starfighter because it's too expensive to use as one, but really it's basically a nasty heavy strike starfighter with a bigger hold if you do want to use it that way.
