The fact that Tycho is so terrible at these types of games really comforts me. I always use to think of myself as a super rad videogame master. And then my non-gaming brother brings around his Halo Machine and repeatedly trounces me. And my other brother who is so much not a gamer that he would never buy a Halo Machine (much less ever spend any time practicing to Git Gud at it) also trounces me. This is how it goes with me in almost every frenetic multiplayer game against other humans.

Oh man, I was playing Overwatch with my older brother a couple days ago. He was Pharah, I was Zarya.

"Hey, you're Pharah right? What's your ult status cuz mine is good to go. I could trap them and you can take em all out with justice."

"...OMG yes! Let's do that. Yes! That's a great idea!"

So i'm feeling good about myself, because he's somehow never heard of that combo and he thinks I'm super smart. We were escorting on El Dorado, turning the corner to the entrance to the enemy base.

"Ok, Justice is ready, hit em whenever!"

The whole enemy team is running to stop the payload from the entrance... here's my chance! *FOONT* I completely biff the shot and it sails harmlessly over all of them. He rains justice and I think maybe gets one of them. He was disappointed in me... I was disappointed in myself.

I was taking a break from Overwatch. I had finally been free of its clutches for almost 3 weeks. Then it pulled me back in with the promise of new skins for Year of the Rooster. I played for like 4 hours last night. I only even turned on my console so I could start playing through the mass effect series again before andromeda drops. I think I have a problem...

I stopped playing in August after playing and playing and playing to grind out and buy lootboxes for Summer Games. Then logged back in to buy Halloween event items with stored-up credits. Then logged back in to buy Winter items with stored-up credits.

Then when they announced Lunar New Year loot I haven't even bothered to log in because I ran out of credits and I'd have to pay money to buy cosmetics for a game I stopped playing five months ago.

I felt the same way after not playing Team Fortress 2 for six years. When I went back I was doing OK at first but then I started dying a lot. All those fancy new weapons started overwhelming me. I failed horribly, felt a huge disconnect between myself and the class I'd spent almost 1600 hours getting good at and haven't been back since. It's not the same game anymore and I didn't find it as fun.

That's what drove me away every time I started thinking about playing TF2 again. I'm very, very glad that Overwatch items are only cosmetic.

I was never very good; I was, for the most part, a W+M1 Pyro.
Which is why I tend to play Warframe these days.
"Run/jump in that general direction, as fast as you can, killing everything between you and the objective."
