Mutant League Football is back on Kickstarter after a failed 2013 attempt, with the intent of launching later this year on PC and consoles

The last two times I've gone to C2E2 there's been a booth with a demo of the game, so they seem committed to it, and you get access to that demo with even a $1 contribution

also, most importantly, they have brought in Tim Kitzrow, the voice of NBA Jam, on commentary

I always thought that Mutant Football League would make an excellent Let's Play game.

Got Steamworld Heist from Humble Monthly and uhhhhh this game is cool as hell?

Steamworld Dig was neat, but this is on a whole other level

It's really successful at being a 2D XCOM thing

This just hit the goal after a couple days, so they say it should be out in October for PC, consoles a few months later

You can get a demo right now if you contribute

I backed it the first time and I backed it this time, but I'm honestly surprised they made their goal this time. That's good news though! I'm excited about a new Mutant League Football game, and hopefully it does well enough that a hockey one gets made. Maybe other sports too!

The art style is a great idea in theory (because I can't say "on paper") but in practice looks horrible

That's a game that might've needed to wait for 4K to make it work

I'd kind of fell off the game after reaching a really difficult encounter I wasn't sure how to resolve (one of those things where I took a few runs at it and just needed a break, then other things came up and I never got back to it), but after talking it up here I picked it up again this weekend. Apparently some DLC dropped between now and last time I played so I nabbed that and put several hours into the game again. Yeah it's still real real good.

Man I was about to say how he should make a new Twisted Metal that isn't drastically terrible but I guess there was one in 2012 and it was...not bad? IGN gave it a fuckin 9

Because Psychonauts 2 was originally funded by Fig, a crowdsourcing site Schaeffer helped start that was supposed to actually give dividends to its investors instead of just prizes like kickstarter does, and Double Fine already has a pretty shady history with crowd funding

    I didn't know that!

But yeah I don't think that will stop people from using this to get mad at them, people are pretty upset at how they've handled stuff in the past and have let that just snowball in terms of negative feelings towards the company.

I've long since dropped them completely, but to someone outside it doesn't really seem like they did anything wrong here. I just don't think that will stop people from crapping on them for it

I like Double Fine a lot and the response to the Broken Age stuff still baffles me. They ended up with 10 times their expected funding and ended up delivering a much higher quality game as a result. All my non-game physical rewards arrived within a few months of the KS. It's weird that so many people are basically like "you should've just made the cheap quicker game instead!" They did a good job with updates throughout the campaign and it was obvious they were actually going to deliver, and all backers got both parts. People are just impatient I guess.

The astrobase thing is gross, but should also serve as a warning to people to stop buying early access unless you're pleased with the state of the game at the time of the EA release, and also to devs to stop putting promises as to what will be in the final game. If it's not making enough money to fund the development then there's a very real possibility it will get shut down.

In fairness, a lot of people, myself included, thought act 2 of broken age was really bad

And yes, I'd have preferred the scope they actually pitched

I'm pretty sure the original pitch was just "we want to make an adventure game, and the game we make will depend on the funding."

Sure they could have just made the 300 grand game and pocketed 1-2 mil after rewards and taxes and stuff, but I'd rather that extra cash go into the game like it did.

  • OmnipotentBagelOmnipotentBagel floof Registered User regular
They were in pretty uncharted waters with DFA--they had no idea what sort of response they'd get and the original funding goal was kind of a shot in the dark. Probably a bare-minimum budget for making an adventure game but not necessarily reflective of the game they were really hoping to make.

I'm a fan of both acts of Broken Age - I thought they were gorgeous, fun, and enjoyably surreal entries in a genre that is sadly fairly dormant. The accompanying documentary series was really interesting as well.

The scope they initially pitched would have been like three hours long or something made by a team of like four people or something.

People say they wanted the original pitch, but often don't realize what three hundred thousand bucks would get them.

Yeah, as an original backer, I'm glad they went with the design they did, even though it meant they had to split it into 2 parts.

Now I don't like how part 2 turned out, but that's almost entirely because I felt the team put too much emphasis on the "Act 1 was too easy" complaints they were getting from the more hardcore adventure game audience.

It also wouldn't have had the same look, which lets be honest is the best part of the game.

  • MaddocMaddoc I'm Bobbin Threadbare, are you my mother? Registered User regular
Yeah, even if I didn't love how the game ultimately turned out I feel great having backed it because I feel like it came together really well and the documentary was almost worth the price of admission by itself

I'm not going to like every game, so I feel like I have to kind of put it into perspective that even if I didn't like it as much as I wanted to, it's not because the product is broken or fucked up or bad or anything

    They shipped a game
