FAQ

How do the stores work?
Each region basically has their own, separate store. SCEA run the American stores, SCEE run the European, Middle Eastern, Indian, African and Oceanian (all of which are usually shortened to PAL) stores and SCEJA run the Japanese, Hong Kong and other East Asian stores. It's honestly a bit of a mess, as some games get released in one region and then take months to come to other regions. The good news is that you can create multiple accounts located in different regions, buy PSN cards online and then buy whichever games you want from the foreign stores.

When does the store usually update?
Tuesday in North America and PAL countries, though some games are added throughout the week. Sales can go up at any time.

Do digital pre-orders offer pre-loads?
Often yes but the times vary depending on the game and the region. Usually it's a couple of days before release.

Are sales common?
The NA stores usually get a new sale every week and often get weekend-only flash sales. The PAL stores get a new sale every two weeks but often get new sales or additions in off weeks.

What's PS+?
Sony's online subscription service. On PS4 you need it to play games online (excluding F2P and MMOs). On top of that, it offers cloud storage space on PS3, PS4 and PS Vita (1GB each on PS3/Vita and 10GB on PS4), exclusive betas/demos and the Instant Game Collection.

Instant Game Collection?
On the first Tuesday of every month, Sony updates the IGC with 6 new games, 2 for each system (though many are cross-buy). You can add these to your account and play them as much as you want, so long as you're subscribed to PS+. If your subscription expires, they are no longer playable but if you re-subscribe later on, they will be playable once more.

Backwards compatibility?
If you've got yourself a first or second generation PS3, your system is backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games. For every other PS3, they're only backwards compatible with PS1 games. The Vita is also backwards compatible with most digital PSP games. Sadly, so far, the PS4 isn't backwards compatible with anything. Hopefully that changes in the future but who knows. You can, however, use the PS3's remote play to play PS1 games on a PSP or PS Vita.

What can I play PSone Classics on?
Most of the PSOne Classics are compatible with PS3, PSP and PS Vita but it does vary with some games. The good news is all three support cross-buy, so any PS1 Classic you've bought for one system can be played on any of the other three systems, so long as they're compatible. You can also swap your saves between them. For a list of PS Vita compatible PSone Classics, check out the PS Vita thread.

What about PS2 Classics?
Currently, there's two types of PS2 Classics. PS2 Classics (PS3) and PS2 Classics (PS4). They're separate purchases and neither can use your old PS2 saves without jumping through a bunch of holes. But the difference between the two is the PS3 ones are straight emulated versions, while the PS4 ones are enhanced with trophy lists, improved resolutions and sometimes better performance.

What's Cross-Buy?
Basically, 'buy one, get the other versions free' across PS3, PS4 and/or PS Vita. It works just as you would expect, you buy one version of the game and get the other versions for free. Just make sure you check beforehand because sometimes the PS3 version of a game may be the only version that's cross-buy (usually when the PS Vita version is cheaper) or the PS3 and PS Vita versions may be cross-buy but not the PS4 version (usually for a very late port).

Cross-Play?
It's what Sony has labelled cross-platform online play between the PS3, PS4 and PS Vita. PS3 players can play online with PS4 or PS Vita players and vice versa.

Cross-Save?
It means you can transfer your saves between different versions of a game.

Spring training is nearly here, so I played a couple games of MLB 16 and wanna keep playing consistently until 17 comes out

I've decided I'm going to grab 17 and play along with the Rays season, hopefully win all the games their real-life counterparts lose and create an alternate universe where the Rays take the World Series

    Fantasy games are fun

Dear Playstation, can you maybe take a small break from all the must-have games? Getting a little overwhelmed here, and it's only been a few weeks into the new year.

    No? Okay.

So, since the Store Update posts appear to be well and truly dead, I guess the only real option is to cobble together something from what I can find. Luckily, PlaystationLifestyle has been putting up the sales posts and the update posts separate, so I can grab from them. I'll link both and then we'll just go from there.

So, yeah, the main thing is Nioh this week. There's a decent Ubisoft sale and an 'anime' sale, which includes a bunch of Tales games as well as a few odd ends here and there. Otherwise, unless Nioh's your bag, this might be a week of relief for you.

Dark Souls games aren't usually my thing, but I'm in love with Nioh. It's so good!

What a year its been for games so far... so many phenomenal games coming out of Japan, and it's only early February! Then Neir's coming up, and a western dev gets in on the action with Mass Effect. Then a bit of a break before Injustice 2 drops. Come to think of it, we also just had the most incredible Super Bowl in the history of the game... it's like the world of entertainment is working overtime to make up for what a shit show 2016 was :P

Half due to stiff controls and half never knowing where the fuck I'm supposed to go

It wears its Dark Souls inspiration on its sleeves, and it's hard as fuck. However, it's also a Team Ninja game, so the controls are slick and combat is buttery smooth. The game also takes place on levels instead of the traditional DS open world. There's nooks and crannies to explore, but you pretty much always know where to go.

There's also a Diablo-esque loot system, and weapon/armor durability is not a thing in Nioh. It's like a Souls-like game tailored specifically for me!

Make no mistake though, Nioh is a Souls ass Souls game, even with all the nice Team Ninja trappings. Whether you like it is going to depend entirely on what about Dark Souls turned you off. If it was the controls, the windy levels with no easy tell as to where to go or the stiffness and slow pace of the combat, Nioh has you covered with Team Ninja sauce. If it was the idea of a punishing game that is going to require you to retry sections (especially bosses) repeatedly, Nioh is still very much that.

Nioh gives no shits and will make sure you know that, a lot.

I've loved the Souls games from Demon's to Dark Souls 3. Only ever beat the second, but played a bunch of all of them. Never got into Bloodbourne though. Gonna give Nioh a shot and report back.

Ah good, I thought I'd messed up for a minute there. Though looking at this week's games again, I think Uncanny Valley received pretty good reviews on Steam, so I may've accidentally overlooked that one.

On Nioh, is it just me who thinks "giant boobs and crazy expensive DLC costumes" when someone says "Team Ninja trappings"?

PSN Sale is weird and glitched. Mobile version of the PSN store tells me games are on sale without discount, and there are a lot of games that have the PS4 version on sale but not the Vita version, which is unusual.

They gave me that too so I ordered it... three days ago. Still haven't seen the game. Delivery keeps getting delayed with no explanation.

No loss, it sounds like it removes everything I like about Dark Souls (but then adds Diablo loot). Those massive, go anywhere levels are the best.

The levels are still decently sized for exploration and whatnot. Shortcuts to open and nooks to explore. The game's just not basically one massive level.

So, more like Demon's Souls than Dark Souls in terms of having discrete levels.

That was the impression I got from the first demo too.

I was thinking I would try and skip MLB:The Show this year, since I haven't had as much time as I used to to really dig into sports games. But goddamn, they have made some of the more significant changes this year than they ever have, and it just looks really amazing overall as usual. Definitely pre-ordering.

Given they're cinematic games by nature, probably not, it'll just mean you can take less hits and enemies are smarter. If your issue is you're mowing down bad guys and there's no threat, it'll help. I'd personally say they're pretty far removed from interactive movies, that for me is closer to Until Dawn, Walking Dead, etc (which I'd still very much class as 'actual games')

I'd personally say they're pretty far removed from interactive movies, that for me is closer to Until Dawn, Walking Dead, etc (which I'd still very much class as 'actual games')

Ya, I've played The Last of Us, and am now playing the first Uncharted for the first time (about half way through). There are plenty enough shooty action bits in these games for me, almost too much actually. I'm loving the fun exploration stuff in between the action and wish there was a little bit more of that. Does series lean more towards that as it goes on, or are there always a fair amount firefights throughout the whole series?

In the first 3 there are a lot of firefights. 4 tones it down quite a bit.

Yeah there's a lot more exploring and relaxing down time in 4. The combat is awesome though. I've of my favourite games of 2016.

Playing through the first three Uncharted games back-to-back provides a really interesting look at the game design process at Naughty Dog. It's easy to see how The Last of Us follows that progression.
