I did Ciri last year and it was awesome! My Husband was Geralt. We will probably be wearing them again, hopefully with some improvements! Hopefully we will see you around to get a picture!

Also, I know it was made clear by the thread overlords, but my husband definitely wore chainmail at PAX last year with no problems.

    Hi

I am planning on cosplaying for the first time this PAX East and I had a few questions. I am planning on doing either Link from Breath of the Wild, Link (Specifically his Skyloft costume) from Skyward Sword, or Robin from Fire Emblem. Obviously it would be hard to know, but any idea how these would be "received"? Also any general advice for someone doing this for the first time?

    Thanks.

I'm not too familiar with Fire Emblem beyond their crossover into Smash so I can't speak too well on the level of attention you'd get. If my circle of friends are any indication though, a good number of 3DS owners are going to recognize you.
Link in any form is iconic, you'll have no problem being well received.
As for first timers, just go into it and have a good time! Get some go to poses down for photos because you'll probably get stopped for a bunch, maybe work on mannerisms and behavior depending on how deep you want to get into character.

Thanks for the response, I'll try to keep that advice in mind!

This is my first PAX and I am very very pumped! As a long time cosplayer I'm planning on cosplaying Halloween Skin witch Mercy for Saturday and possibly another day (not sure) with my boyfriend as soldier76. My boyfriend will also be with his two best friends who are going to be reaper and a male version of Ana! I'm in the works of working on all these projects and I hope to see everyone around!!!

Also I was curious if there's a costume contest?? I was thinking of entering???

Another question, would a fake bow (likely foam) count as a weapon prop that needs to be checked?

To be safe and avoid confusion, anything you carry as part of your costume (even if it is not a "weapon") should be checked. Its a quick process, and it will avoid hassles later.

RE: Boston laws and realistic looking things, we enforce our policies as stated on our site. Convention door security\Boston PD may have a bit more strict policy, and that is not something we have control over. Nothing is certain because you all are super creative and no set of policies we could possibly create would cover all possible things you came up with. Best I can say is follow our rules, keep it hidden on your way to the show, let the door security know its in your bag if it looks dangerous\realistic and how it is not. And then come to Info Booth to get it checked and tagged.

Thank you all for helping make PAX great.

I plan on doing Tachanka from Rainbow Six: Siege, for my weapon prop I will be using a weapon prop but it will be a training weapon used by Police/Military called a "Blue Gun." Completely made outta Rubber and its Completely Blue to help avoid confusion and show its definitely fake.

I probably will also be doing a Division Agent from The Division as well. And if I can complete it on time Axton from Borderlands 2, but I will be carrying around a Claptrap with my Backpack making noises and stuff.

There is no masquerade/costume content. A few gatherings/meet ups, but nothing on the competition front.

March will be far, far too cold for my Green Power Ranger costume. (Mighty Morphin')
So, I'll probably go back to first costume with it's nice warm jacket, Captain N.

Not having a lot of time to work on anything new, will possibly bring Princess Agitha again despite being a bit difficult to pack/wear.

REALLY hoping there are some incredible new Zelda: BOTW side characters announced next week that will be easy to throw together before PAX. Anything's possible!

Is there any policy regarding religious cosplays ? I was thinking of Cosplaying as a Jehovah's Witness but would this be deemed to offensive ? It would just be a suit and something else that indicates I am a JW in my cosplay(maybe some fake flyers or something)

I dunno, but thinking about it as a Jew, if someone showed up in a prayershawl with sidelocks I'd be pretty offended.

Unless you want to do this as, like, a JW for gaming ("have you heard the good news about Overwatch?"). But even then, it's weird. Whether there's an official policy or not, there's a whole world of fun stuff to make fun of and riff on, let's leave people's closely held religious beliefs out of it, I think.

    That's just me, though.

While I think it might be in poor taste people cosplay as Jesus all the time at cons, including PAX.

I was thinking the same thing when I read the original question.

@jigglypuff510 I don't believe there's any PAX rules against 'potentially offensive' cosplay. The only real rules are the weapons policy: http://east.paxsite.com/safety-and-security#weapons-check-policies and "Cosplaying attendees may be asked to alter or modify their costume if it is considered overtly sexual."

A few people may be offended, but I would also say that a few people may be offended by just about any cosplay.

I would just add that if you're dressing up as a mormon it would be considered a lot more 'tasteful' if it was from something (like Book of Mormon I guess? If you felt like singing on the show floor) or slanted toward something gaming related. I would just assume you were a very strict (and probably odd) mormon if you were at the con with your book just walking around. I wouldn't assume you were cosplaying.

Thats actually not a bad idea to slant it toward a game or something, actually seriously considering that.

The difference is one is a famous person, and the other is just an average person living their life. It's not the same and the intentions or the way they will be viewed isn't the same.

I'm also currently working on this cosplay for the boyfriend, but I'm not sure how to even start that asymmetrical coat. We already have the mask from the last time he was Corvo, at least. I was Jessamine last time, but this time, I'll be accompanying him as his...otherworldly benefactor. :) If anyone knows of any Dishonored/Bethesda/Arkane meetups or events, let us know!

It's been a long time since I've posted in one of these threads and I couldnt be happier to report I'll be doing some new cosplay this year! If anybody else is doing any LoL cosplays or really any in general want to meet up please PM me! I would love to meet other cosplayers coming to Pax East. I've got my three day pass ready and hopefully will be in good enough shape to have my Twisted Fate Cosplay ready as well.

    Right now it's looking like:
    Friday: High Noon Jhin
    Saturday: Twisted Fate

Cant wait to see what you all bring out! It's coming faster than we think!

I am cosplaying as Sylvanas Windrunner. I hear that pax east has a strict dress code. Does anyone know what they consider to be too much belly showing. I this this cosplay should expectable but am a little worried.

They have a booth babe policy for exhibitors. This does not apply to cosplayers. For cosplayers, it's far more lenient. The one case that sticks in my mind is the male Zangief cosplayer that was wearing *very* tiny shorts that was asked to wear slightly larger shorts. I don't think that showing midriff is an issue.

Would be happy to give you some tips, but to be honest, other than adapting a couple parts of existing patterns for the coat, we're mostly doing it custom/winging it.

Currently I'm gonna be doing Castle from Rainbow Six Siege (my friend is coming as Jager), Reaper from Overwatch.

I haven't decided who I'm gonna be doing as a third though. I was thinking of doing a soldier from XCOM 2 and trying to get a group together for it since it seems like an easy cosplay I could assemble in the small amount of time I've got (if I'm going by their rookie gear that is).

To add onto Zerzhuls post and to be clear, the "booth babe" policy is for booth staff working the booth, if they have someone at the booth cosplaying as one of the characters in the game posing for pictures or something, that is generally fine. While we are more lenient on attendees in costume then exhibitors, it seems like ever year we have a Street Fighter Cammy that goes a bit too inappropriate with the thong and we have to ask them to change. Showing a bit of midriff would be fine though. Please don't take it personally if we ask you to change, we do appreciate the effort you all put into your outfits, but we have to strike a balance.

*edit* nothing against Cammy cos-players, not trying to call you out, its just the most common one.
