Actually, Schrodinger's chart proved my point exactly.

Notice that the number of people who got call backs were in the minority regardless of race.

White people don't automagically get showered with scholarships and jobs. Unless you were born into a manger full of $1000 bills, life is fucking hard. Yeah, if you're black, female, poor or god forbid any combination of the three then life is just that much harder for you.

And above it all is a group of people - mostly white and male - who are rich and powerful and who work every day to consolidate their wealth and power, which drives down salaries, drives up real estate prices, drives up tuition costs, and drives down the amount of spending on the kinds of services that actually help the poor. And those people, through mouthpieces in the mass media, have managed to convince poor white folk that the reason they're struggling is because the non-white folk have managed since 1970 to take a bigger piece of the pie than their fair share. It's a smoke-and-mirrors game to prevent them from noticing that the real people who have more than their fair share are the 5% of people who control 95% of the wealth.

And they've managed to get all of us on bottom - white, black, male, female, straight, gay, yellow, mutant, Martian, whatever - bickering at one another about stupid fucking shit like affirmative action and Don fucking Imus while they slowly make the world ever so slightly more regressive with every passing moment.

Bravo for playing right into their fucking hands.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

the "no true scotch man" fallacy.

It's The South all over again.

The presence of slavery was absolutely shitty for anyone who wasn't a slave-owner.

But the plantations got poor dumb white bastards to fight for them while they stayed home safe and cozy until the war was decided and then "oh shucks I guess we'll just have to hire people now without a bullet going through us."

    and

    I'm racist against stupid people.

See this reaction, Jinnigan? Expect to get a lot more like it. Why? Because while everything you might point out regarding stereotypes, model minorities, glass ceilings, etc. all make sense, you can't possibly expect someone who hasn't experienced those things first hand to be as passionate about it as you are. It's psychologically impossible.

It's like when you have a hard time figuring out why some white people get so defensive when people accuse them of racism. Granted, it's probably not be as bad as the shit you've had to put up with, but that doesn't mean it doesn't suck. I try to think of how much more miserable I'd be if I was poor or born a woman but the truth is that we only tend to notice things when they go awry rather than when they go our way.

So what are you saying, exactly? That I should just pack up my bags and go home because, oh jeez, most white people don't 'get' racism?

Oh they'll get it. But it'll be through perspectives drawn from their individual experiences. Just as you're drawing from your own. It's like teaching a man tennis and then scolding him for using his left hand. Everyone incorporates the information into their lives differently.

    STUDY DESIGN

The basic design of this study involves the use of four male auditors (also
called testers), two blacks and two whites.
    The testers were paired by
race; that is, unlike in the original Urban Institute audit studies, the two
black testers formed one team, and the two white testers formed the second
team (see fig. 3).The testers were 23-year-old college students from
Milwaukee who were matched on the basis of physical appearance and
general style of self-presentation. Objective characteristics that were not
already identical between pairs—such as educational attainment and
work experience—were made similar for the purpose of the applications.
Within each team, one auditor was randomly assigned a “criminal record”
for the first week; the pair then rotated which member presented himself
as the ex-offender for each successive week of employment searches, such
that each tester served in the criminal record condition for an equal num-
ber of cases. By varying which member of the pair presented himself as
having a criminal record, unobserved differences within the pairs of ap-
plicants were effectively controlled. No significant differences were found
for the outcomes of individual testers or by month of testing.

Job openings for entry-level positions (defined as jobs requiring no
previous experience and no education greater than high school) were
identified from the Sunday classified advertisement section of the Mil-
waukee Journal Sentinel.12 In addition, a supplemental sample was drawn
from Jobnet, a state-sponsored web site for employment listings, which
was developed in connection with the W-2 Welfare-to-Work initiatives.13

The audit pairs were randomly assigned 15 job openings each week.
The white pair and the black pair were assigned separate sets of jobs,
with the same-race testers applying to the same jobs. One member of the
pair applied first, with the second applying one day later (randomly var-
ying whether the ex-offender was first or second). A total of 350 employers
were audited during the course of this study: 150 by the white pair and
200 by the black pair. Additional tests were performed by the black pair
because black testers received fewer callbacks on average, and there were
thus fewer data points with which to draw comparisons.
    A larger sample
size enables me to calculate more precise estimates of the effects under
    investigation.
It is certainly the case that the psychological experiences of testers can
influence the outcome of audit studies in nontrivial ways. It is unlikely,
however, that these internal dynamics are the driving force behind the
results reported from this study. As noted earlier, in a vast majority of
cases, testers had little if any contact with employers. Given that a ma-
jority of callbacks were made on the basis of applications submitted with
little or no personal contact, the internal disposition of the tester is unlikely
    to exert much influence.
The finding that personal contact actually served
to weaken the effect of a criminal record (see fig. A2 above) provides
further evidence that the friendly, appealing qualities of the testers were
apparent to employers, even among applicants in the criminal record
    condition.

Anyway, it's published and peer-reviewed in a leading Sociology Journal, and it won the 2003 Dissertation Award from the American Sociological Association.

No one said that they did.

The point is that even though everyone has to put effort into finding a job, the a white guy with a clean record has to go through half as many applications to find a job than an equally qualified black guy, and that a white guy with a dirty record has to go through one-third as many interviews. That's a considerable form of priveledge.

Moreover, These are not wealthy upper class elite. These are high school graduates looking for entry level jobs as dishwashers, some of whom have served time in prison for possessing cocaine. Showing that this privledge is not reserved for the few.
