Played a great deal of silent storm and warband last night. Actually started merc'ing out and building fun with the various leaders.

Silent Storm is fucking racist with the Indian doctor, but there's an actual Indian in a WW2 game is something interesting.

It really can't be stressed enough just how awesome the Gunmetal games are. Gunmetal Arcadia Zero is pretty much a straight up Zelda 2 tribute with impeccable feel. And it's designed with speedruns and NG+ in mind if you are a fan of such things.

And this is where the sequel differentiates itself. It takes the impeccable feel and mechanics of Zero and puts them into a highly polished roguelite format, with legacy progression mechanics, different characters to unlock and play and so on if that is your sort of thing. I love both things so these are taking up a lot of my brainspace and time right now.

If you enjoy classic NES style gaming this is some of the best. And the CRT emulation truly is glorious. I scoffed at first but it really was the final touch that turned on the nostalgia overdrive. Minor Key Games has really been putting out consistently fun and interesting games.

I follow these guys pretty closely but someone I've missed not one but two of their game releases? I'm losing my edge! Thanks for pointing it out to me

Edit: damn, I wasn't subbed for the May Humble Monthly or I would have had it! Guess I gotta get it the old fashioned way

@destroyah87 Hit me near instantly after I made my post. I will repay you in the best way Destroyah, mark my words.

Very, very awesome of you though. I want to finish up all the achievements in the original before I try the second because I know if I try it now I won't go back. Immediately after finishing it this morning, I went from already thinking Bleed 2 looked like a great game to wanting it badly. So again, this was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING of you.

I made a pretty short post because I was posting it on my phone right after getting to work, but there was a lot to love about the game. I knew the second I opened it that it oozed personality. But there is something about how it obviously can be a challenging game, but has the option to be played pretty casually to the end if you just want to see the story. Which is what I did this morning.

Super excited now. This game has my attention in a strong way.

Though, I have heard this one is much much better than Zestiria starts out, so I'm actually kind of excited to give it a shot in a bit. Thank you so much Destroyah, now STOP SENDING GIFTS WHILE BEING AWAY SO WE CANT BITCH AT YOU FOR IT IN CHAT.

Disclaimer I have been thinking of Berseria all day because the plot has dug its hooks into me and YES INJECT IT INTO MY VEINS.

The whole cast is great, I don't dislike anyone. Even in Vesperia I was only mildly tolerant of the axe kid.

    So, I finished Valdis Story.

Also, for anyone thinking of playing it, and wondering if there is an up-to-date map, there is now. And with that I've also made my first contribution to community guides. It's just a map to show what the whole layout is. At some point maybe I'll update it with more information, but not now. Now I am done with that game and am moving on!

Kamoana is not part of the cast, she's an NPC who has tangential plot significance. So she only shows up a couple times and then I can freely ignore her.
Velvet is great, Rokurou is great, Eizen is great, Laphicet is great, Magilou is THE BEST, and even the final character takes the stick out of her ass pretty quick.

I've put a fair bit of time dabbling in Duelyst this week and I'm at a bit of a crossroads about how I feel about this kinda game. Maybe those that play LCGs or other multi games frequently can relate and I'd like to hear from you if you've encountered this feeling as well.

The game itself is fairly simple to get your head around. If you've got a commanding grasp on basic maths, spacial awarenes and are cognizant of card synergies in building a deck when you're building it, you're 90% there to becoming a good Duelyst player. The point of a good deck appears to be having the right number of the right kind of cards to execute a certain small number of strong strategies than can use to win the game.

The catch is that you need to build it to be robust enough to win against ANY opponent. There are 12 different kinds of Generals leading 6 different faction types with significantly different strengths and weaknesses. They all share common Neutral cards, but they merely serve as a pool to augment what the faction Core cards tend towards.

So the problem becomes trying to build a deck that is strong against the widest possible variety of opponent conditions (who're hobbled with the same restrictions, mind you) without watering your deck down so far that it's strong against none and weak against all; you need to specialise but be adaptable to the unexpected.

This translates loosely to 'You're good against some decks and will win and you're weak against some decks and will lose'. Skill of a player obviously comes into it and the amount of time they've played determines how specialised their cards could be, but that's pretty much it. I get the occasional freakish win against all odds because I have contingencies for such in some of my decks, but my overwhelming number of losses is because I couldn't handle a specific problem that this particular deck isn't tailored to solve. I'm sure if I had another one of my decks to face this problem I would've been in with a chance, but without knowing the General and Faction beforehand this is impossible.

This ends up making me feel that none of the wins or losses are really mine, that with competent play with competent players the outcome is mostly preordained and unless you live for the very small percentage of wins that go against the grain, you're going to be spinning your wheels most of the time.

Hmm. I want to play more because it's occasionally really fun to get a win streak and I LOVE the pixel art and animations, but in terms of wanting to progress with learning in order to "master" it as I claimed to want to do at the start of the year... I think this was a poor choice.

Another night of multiplayer God Eater: Resurrection, this time with @Stabbity Style and @Scratchy. Another night of failing to load back at base after two or three missions. A warning to anyone wanting to co-op this game, keep it down to two players. I also hear that just mashing through the post-mission rewards can reduce the chances of this kind of softlocking.

@TeeMan have you ever looked at Chaos Reborn? It's not really a deckbuilder game as such, but it does contain elements of those sorts of games. The mix of card game mechanics and turn based tactical combat is pretty compelling stuff. The card game mechanics also have a bluffing mechanic that has an amazing balancing effect on the game. Maybe it'd be a better fit for you than Duelyst. Anyway your post reminded me that I haven't played it lately and that's a thing I should do something about. It has a small but dedicated community of players so finding asynch games isn't an issue. It also has a really clever campaign mode, the Chaos Realms. The mode uses all kinds of cool behind the scenes multiplayer matchmaking for coop and PvP adventures. Or you can turn all of that off and go at the realm in single player.

It's also from Julian Gollop of original XCOM fame if that makes any difference. The best thing about Chaos Reborn in my spellbook is that it's designed to be a living game, with evolving community features and a careful watch on the game's metastrategic layer.

If any of that sounds intriguing the steam store page has a demo.

  • TeeManTeeMan BrainSpoon Registered User regular
Can't say no to giving the demo a waggle, @Drake. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks also to @mildlymorbid who was not innocent in his intentions and gifted me Gunmetal Arcadia! Thanks a bunch, chummer :) I really dig this developer despite what I believe to be a pretty decent misstep in their latest offering in Slayer Shock. I really enjoyed Super Win the Game which had a lot of Zelda 2 elements too, so maybe he should mine this genre a little more because he seems to be a good fit for him

Wow this gained a LOT since I first saw footage of it.

I like the look of this game more than Ori, which is a similar game I think? Though this looks more directly tied to the SOTN style they try to emulate. Which is a good thing.

But the pretty visuals are much easier to make out which is a huge plus for me.

Steam economics question: above posts said that some shovelware creators intend to profit off the secondary market of something something trading something, so they don't care if they only have to pop $100 or $500 to shit their shit onto the market. What? I ignore the little pictures, etc. that you get for achievements. How do you turn them into real money?

    Not achievements, cards.

Developers get a small cut of every card sale for their games (which you can see when you buy a card from the market).

So if you make a game with a dozen cards, and people buy the 6 they can't get from free drops at, say, $0.02 to you, then it doesn't take very long to make back your $200 investment in source files and Steam fees (because this is purely on top of the money people already paid you for the game).
