Hm, Stuart McLean, an iconic Canadian radio journalist and storyteller, died today

He was so Canadian. One of his most riotous episodes involved him releasing a single live cricket in the studio while on air, and him and his producer giggling helplessly for most of the show.

    hmm.

from the earlier post (ie original hdmi monitor works fine, TV freaks out) I would very much suspect that dvi/VGA will close the problem

if not - ok we need to dive into display settings. Intel? AMD? nvidia?

    So, some detailed info:

    - Only one vid-card HDMI port, which means that the monitor and the TV are not plugged in at the same time (she has to physically change which one is plugged in)
    - TV's native res is 1360x768
    - Games no longer crash (think that was a Big Picture Mode issue), but simply go to a black screen when attempted to run. Games tested include: Dishonored 2, Borderlands 2, Dishonored, Dragon's Dogma
    - Games in black screen are running, and if she switches it back to the monitor after turning them on they're running normally on the monitor
    - Vid card driver is up to date
    - Applications that are not games, such as Chrome, seem to work normally on the TV. Suggests probable video card issue?

    so this is frustrating

my wife bought a HDMI cable specifically to run it from her PC to her TV so she could play video games on her TV and chill that way, especially for when the new Mass Effect comes out

do the whole Steam Big Picture thing

aaaaaand every time she tries to run any game, it crashes

she can't figure out why, and is getting super frustrated with the internet's dumb advice

anyone got any thoughts on this

crashes of what severity - hangs machine? blue screen? app crashes to desktop?

I would suspect some video card and driver funkiness first - connect the normal monitor to the computer via HDMI and see what happens?

When she runs a game, any game, that game crashes and throws an error message. The PC itself doesn't hardlock or nothin'.

some samples of the error messages would be good

totally different games ideally, not just the same engine

is this a multi display setup - ie is the original monitor still connected

check that the cable really is going to the GPU, not the integrated HDMI out (if there is one)

    Okay, so, updated

It's not longer crashing (since she's not running it in Big Picture mode anymore)

Instead, it's just a black screen when she tries to run any game. If she switches the display back to the monitor (physically switching which one is plugged in) the game is running, it's just not displaying on her TV for reasons unknown.

This happens with a variety of different games.

Her TV's native resolution is 1360x768.

    She has updated her drivers.

That is a strange resolution for a TV.

yea it's probably encryption not working too good. or GPU trying to be too smart about the display.

if it's encryption you are probably stuck pending a longer cable. maaaaaybe your TV has a firmware update. I wouldn't bet on it.

if it's being too fancy for its own good, manually adjusting the settings would work

Interesting... when I open the display settings on the TV when the PC is hooked up to it, it says the res is 1360 x 768, like that's what it is auto-detecting

    The manufacturer's specs say it's 1366 x 768, which might be what's goofing things?
