The Democrats do not want election reform. They do not want to fix things. They want to say "It was Russia. They won because they cheated." and continue on their merry way.
Patently false, given Obama's stated interest in redistricting and people like Jason Kander starting groups to directly address voter suppression (https://www.letamericavote.org/).
Obama is not the Democratic Party. If it was, 2018 would be a done deal.

You don't get to claim that Democrats aren't interested in election reform and then just dismiss an example of that exact thing out of hand.
Obama is a significant part of the Democratic Party and he has a goal for after his term to work against voter suppression.

I think the point was more of Obama is no longer an elected official. He can speak to garner support or help get information out, but he doesn't actually write law or vote on it anymore.

I don't think Perez is going to fix the email problem.

One, I don't even understand what this post means. Two, we are done with this tangent.
Given the race is over, what is the topic now? We can't talk too broadly about its ramifications without going outside the narrow confines of the race itself.

"Obama cost democrats tons of seats which is why Perez is bad", says people who always try to discourage voting for any D they disapprove of but couldn't get Teachout elected.
I'm honestly amazed that Democrats have the most evil and incompetent administration in the history of the united states to rail against and we're still punching ourselves in the face.
it is quite an incredible talent really, when all is said and done.
It's a pretty good time to talk about how the previous DNC managed to lose against the "most evil and incompetent administration in the history of the united states" then, and how to avoid doing that in the future.

They weren't that yet, racism and xenophobia are sadly effective, and 3 letter agencies going rogue are rarely good for your presidential campaign.

The past year has been a question of "do people want the DNC to continue as it has, or do people want it to take the gloves off and pursue things with more vigor?" There's a lot to be said about inability to capitalize on enthusiasm when it shows up, about how quickly an issue is dropped or details sacrificed while getting nothing in return from the opposition party. And, more to the point, there's things to be said about the established DNC leaders calling for unity, meanwhile there are Democrat Senators and Congressmen siding with Trump on things happening. People want accountability when things like that happen.

For the Democratic Party to be utterly destroyed piece by piece at every level over the course of eight years, rendered weaker than it has been in a century, and to see people keep trotting out the idea that this is because of external factors, not to internal failings or a weakness of ideology, is galling.
Trump is a buffoon, the least popular candidate in generations, championing a party whose political agenda has polls squarely in the toilet. To lose to him should be an enormous shame for the Democrats, encouraging soul-searching of the deepest level possible. But, no, it was somebody else's fault. They cheated. They didn't follow the rules.
Good God, if we keep going like this 2018 is going to be a massacre.

What would you have the DNC do going forward. They are crippled until reapportionment due to racist backlash to the first black president combined with citizens united letting in untold billions of dollars into the political system in a census year. We can soul search and write a billion articles about how we "don't understand middle america" or whatever fluff you want. None of it matters compared to dollar bills and bad lines on a map.

The problem for the Democratic party is entirely organizational. The idea that it's ideological is just silly imo. Ideologically the party has been shifting for years now and there's no major forces that matter pushing back against it's gradual movement.
The issue is that the party has long been shit at doing anything below the federal level and even alot of places at the federal level. The party ceded local races and state races to the GOP. This election was just yet another example of that and other then losing the Presidency was practically business as usual.
But like with the ideological issue, the organizational issue does not at this moment seem to be in contention. None of the major candidates as far as I saw were arguing about what needed to be done. All of them were on board with some bottom up focus on races to try and take back local and state seats and to try and harness the wave that Trump's inauguration has unleashed.
The major ideological issue is that white supremacy is really popular with white people, as it has been for the entire history of America.
This isn't a joke, but has Tom Perez been on record in any way about that? Especially when it comes to passively benefiting from that supremacy and how it affects law.

Before he was Secretary of Labor he was Obama's Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. And he was real aggressive about it. So yes.
Self-righteousness is incompatible with coalition building.

I've got my fingers crossed, on the real, that a lot of that aggression was organic on Perez's part and not a product of working with Obama. He's gonna be on his own on the job now that's he's chair of the party and... I hope, cautiously, he lives up to that aggression.

You realize that the Attorney General's office and the White House are independent of one another, right?

Yeah, but what I'm getting at is positive influence and goal compatibility can still cross over and embolden people on the job. Essentially what I'm saying is I'm reserving hopes for Perez and the party individually, and in both cases it will be contingent on getting results for the better.
DNC chair has very little influence on combating such things. Except symbolically, where the Dems are doing pretty well. Latino chair, black Muslim runner up, just nominated the first woman ever, runner up was the first Jewish person to win any primary contest, etc.

So then people thinking this new chairman will solve the party's problems are wrong to think so?

That's how it appears. Too many people think the Democrats run their organization like the GOP when they don't.
