Damn, yeah, Seagrave did some good album art. The only one I knew with his name on it was Edge of Sanity's The Spectral Sorrows, but he also did a few Dismember and Entombed albums. And plenty of others.
I've never been super into White Zombie but I have a soft spot for this album for some reason. Maybe partly because I was able to identify the Urotsukidoji samples at the beginning. How many people can say that? Probably more than a few BUT ANYWAY...
Huh, weird, I was listening to the "It Came From N.Y.C." demo compilation thing from White Zombie yesterday. Didn't get all the way through it because it is nearly 3 hours long. I just can't listen to the same band for 3 hours straight. I'll finish it up next week. That early stuff sounds so much different from what that band would later become. It's almost in a different genre. Interesting so far.
I remember listening to "La Sexorcisto" as a young burgeoning metal lad in my parents' basement with red light bulbs in all the light sockets, incense burning, headphones on, probably playing a video game at the same time. Ah, nostalgia around your birthday. Ha. I guess this one being 25 doesn't make me feel old. "Nemesis Divina" being 20 years old last year did though. But at least I got a sweet copy of it on vinyl now!

thinking about it I would love it if Devin released remastered versions of physicist and ocean machine with him doing the vocals now
his voice is so much richer and physicist in particular kinda sounds like mud now

Yeah, I personally thought Physicist sounded crummy when it came out. I don't know what they did to his voice in that recording. He sounded much better on Ocean Machine.

I could not hear way they were playing because every single mid and high note was destroyed by the bass

Devin did a v good job - whole of ocean machine then 3 songs from transcendence
only downside was so blown out loud that it was hard to hear his notes some of the time
he did some cool vocal improvisation too

I wish I could see him do all of the Ocean Machine stuff live, but it is not to be!
I mentioned a few pages back that I never really got into Ayreon's The Theory of Everything, but I've given it a few listens over the last few days and I am enjoying it a lot more. Especially on the instrumental side. The vocals are fine too, but honestly I find the lyrics kind of lacking, and I'm not even a big fan of the lyrics/story of the other Ayreon albums either.
Anyway, it's always nice to go back to something you didn't really like at first and find something worthwhile. The first album I ever experienced that with was Cynic'sFocus.

Pretty much all the White Zombie albums were good in their own way.
It's a mix of both. It has some of the heavier, more complex style circa Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye but also some pure catchy rocking songs not unlike the last couple albums.

I've had a massive dose of that this week with Morbid Angel, I don't quite know why I've never got into them before but I'm really feeling Domination at the moment. The solo from Where the Slime Live alone...
Gateways.. is good too but the triggered snare sound really grates on me after a while.
Domination is a tremendous and very underrated album, it's always been my second fave Morbid Angel after Altars. Some of their most interesting songs there.
Came across this really strange but neat band called Montfaucon. They're a death metal band with a heavy emphasis on piano throughout. I don't know how else to explain it but check it out:
This sounds cooler than I thought it would. Also noticed that Dan Swanö mixed and mastered the album.
I don't think there's a way to embed bandcamp stuff on this forum.
Update from a month ago: I am really enjoying this Montfaucon album. I bought it off their bandcamp site and have been listening to it at least once every week. Definitely worth checking out if you missed @Dissociater's post about them last month. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9Fgv989RJw
I've tried and tried to listen to Sonic Youth but I simply cannot get into the art rock aspect of it...
Never thought of them as Art Rock, jungleroomx. To me they're just a rock band doing very much their own thing and who, despite their love of dissonance, create seriously catchy and memorable tunes and frequently give me ASMR. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Thurston is a genius who could create amazing from a pile of shit and frequently did.
If the first track below doesn't give you ASMR, then I can't help you. But seriously, every song on Goo gets me at some point, the bass & guitar riff that resolves when she's singing "You ain't never goin anywhere, I ain't never goin anywhere, ..." on "Tunic" also, for example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bYDhcLg7Yk
I always end-up imagining some kind of narrative, not because they are telling a linear story, but because they evoke one somehow and for me their songs are usually highly emotional evocative as well, but not in a way I can easily put into words. Anyway, sorry to hear that bro; Sonic Youth fucking rules.

Totally agree with this, although I'm an oddball and have Heretic rounding out my top 3. I could happily sit and watch/listen to Trey and Sandoval jam/improv for hours.

I'm pretty new to Morbid Angel but have been listening to them a bunch lately after I saw that they were coming to my neck of the woods on tour this summer. I've always been aware of them but never really listened. They are totally fucking awesome and I'm mad at myself for not checking out a legend sooner.

Well shit, that was awesome. I really gotta get into more non-metal stuff.
Battle Beast are solid and definitely have a very 80s sound. Not a few of their songs sound like something there should be a training montage over in a Gymkata sequel, or similar.

Goo is a masterpiece, probably one of my fave 20 albums ever of any kind. Daydream Nation, Evol and Sister are also great earlier records but pretty murky and not as accessible. Dirty is also masterful, it came out after Goo. Their constantly varying screwball tuning schemes are worth listening to them for alone. Try this tune:

Word. I'm significantly more picky outside of metal with the vast majority of music simply boring me (can't remember the last good non-metal shit I grabbed aside from Kanga's 2016 release). However, if you are one of those for whom Sonic Youth works, then you pretty much can't go wrong with any of their LPs. Dirty and Goo, being top priority, of course.

I got them out of my posts jungleroomx.
On "getting" Sonic Youth: I can assure you there's a huge swath of music that vast amounts of other people enjoy that I simply don't care for no matter how many times I try, so I completely understand where you are coming from. Hopefully I didn't come across as trite and rude previously, but if I did, then I'm sorry about that.

They are a total guilty pleasure of mine, it's like a slightly laidback Enforcer being fronted by a gal that's a combo of Doro and Cyndi Lauper. I'll be seeing them with Sabaton and Leaves' Eyes in May, a whole 3 days after seeing Hammerfall and Delain.

Suddenly I just had a flashback of Blind Melon being featured on MTV's Headbanger's Ball. That was weird. "No Rain" comes on and it's the first time I'm seeing it and I expect this happy-sounding song to turn sinister, but nope!

It's a glorious EP of balls dirty punk/thrash.

I like it. Still wouldn't exactly put it above Martin Walkyier-era Skyclad, though.
edit: They did get an old guitarist back in the band for this album - Dave Pugh. He's been out of the band since their 6th album, I believe.
This album is 25 years old today:

Solid stuff.
I want to buy the vinyl because I am turning into a vinyl collector junkie. I'm broke this month though so I might have to wait a while.
I really can't wait to hear the rest of it too, the first three tracks up online are very good.
Is it along the lines of their more modern, mellowy stuff?
I really dug the first released single. And you know I'm all about the CTS stylings.

Yeah, I'm really hoping the rest of the album has the same quality. We'll probably get another lyric video in a few days.
