who is into this kind of shit
I like the idea of a haunted house that is out to actually terrify me instead of relying on good makeup and jump scares. Something that gets me to turn off my analytical brain so I'll stop walking wide-eyed and smiling into every room to appreciate the time and effort the set designers and costume/makeup people put into everything and actually buy into the haunt.
I do not want to experience one of the super gross-out ones that lean on things like naked, fat people or sexual assault to up the ante like the one that ran around here a few years back.

I've always wanted to try one of those, mostly to see how much different the feel is from a regular haunted house.
Update: maybe one that is more horror based and less of a weird sociopathic angle.
Like I don't mind feeling uncomfortable for a thrill but the one in the article just seems kinda lame.
Man, that's super fucking lame, "haunted house" my ass. That reads like somebody's shitty intro to BDSM.
You wanna do this thing right, then actually do that shit right. I could rent a camp in the woods for an overnight trip and have people pissing themselves with the right set up, much less renting a hotel room or 3. (Without resorting to physical assault or sexual harassment mind) Ugh, as someone who puts on events, just makes me mad that that was their idea.
You want a good haunted house, check out some of the reads on Japanese haunted houses. Those guys know their shit and how to tell a story while amping up dread.

Does anyone have any recommendations for spooky podcasts?
Have you listened to The NoSleep Podcast? It's pretty much the Radiolab of spooky podcasts. Good stories, good production value, wins every award every year forever.
Edit: Don't worry about the Season Pass stuff. There's tons of free content without you having to pay anything, and a lot more you can pay for if you choose.

That... that is neither haunted nor spooky; that's just straight fucked up. You're not supposed to actually break people during a "haunt," goddamn.
...I think what bothers me - aside from the laziness of it - is that part of what makes a haunted house fun is the otherworldly aspect of it. You know that the things you're seeing aren't real, can't possibly be real; and when you get out of the house and back into the real world you leave the fear behind, but the thrill stays. Blackout apparently relies on fears and scenarios that are way too plausible (at least the individual parts, if not the whole).

I just watched the film Get Out. It's an amazing thriller, I highly recommend it.
Oh, yay! I wanted to see it but ... well, heck now I don't even remember where I heard it was bad. I'ma watch it this weekend!

You mean the VVitch?
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I have come across a person that didn't like The VVitch. The conversation where that came up also included them suggesting that I really needed to see Dracula Untold.

Some folk might remember my stories of scary dreams from a long time ago, featuring a recurring presence that I would describe as a wraith or shade. Kinda thing where basically any time she shows up, I become immediately awake in the dream, but can't magic anything away. She's there, and I'm trapped within whatever setting the dream has while she hunts.
So I took melatonin for a whole lot of years, every night, no crazy nightmares!
Until about a week and a half ago, melatonin started making me horribly ill in the mornings. And guess who's back! It's the fucking grey lady(She's literally grey like light doesn't reflect off her properly) trying to burn my eyes out from the inside.
So she shows up in a dream and right at the point just before I usually start screamin myself awake, a new player enters the match! It's a totally new character, who like the grey lady, feels like a distinct presence and not just a normal dream person. It's the Stone Man, a large floating sandstone carved faceted head, that you can't look at directly, only from the side of your vision. And it hums, like a deep slow rolling rumble. As it hums you can see these intricate patterns like carvings shift and flow across it in your peripheral vision, and it makes her go away for a time, but it doesn't feel like the Stone man is really there to help me, more like they go way back and I'm just stuck in the crossword.
Brain spiders.

okay so you either need to start taking melatonin again, to hide from them, or figure out your Persona real quick
Damn. I dig the lore here a whole lot but I'm sorry you're dealing with it in your actual life.
Sounds like Stone Man is a check on Grey Lady to keep her in line. Some kind of supernatural parole officer. I hope she chills out or you find a new way to soothe your brain from experiencing these manifestations.
FWIW my night terrors went away when I punched one in the face
See if you can manage that
I caught her by the neck one time. Up until then I'd never seen her true face, she could shape shift and manifest as a featureless face with tendrils of darkness. Showed up in a dream once where I was part of a swat team, she wiped out everyone one at a time. Ever since I caught her that one time she's grey, kinda hazy like out of focus.
Here's an interesting idea, have you tried fictionalizing them? As in don't just write about what they've done already, write a few short stories (while you're awake) about what they haven't done yet. It might help you take ownership of them since they insist on using your head as a playground.give them new rules and motivations. Reprogram their AI.

Write about how they like to take you out for ice cream and to the zoo!
...it looks like the adult alien shed it's skin again.
edit for transparency hehehe; this was the prototype of the Alien costume. It was unusued in the final movie, as they found the material was too stiff, and the black version looked cooler. It informed the final design a lot, tho! Transparent dome n' all.
As I'm currently enjoying the heck out of Twin Peaks season 3, I've been meaning to check out more of Lynch's previous work.
So I started watching Mulholland Dr. on Netflix. I know nothing about this movie beyond it being one of the higher recommended Lynch stuff.
The thing I really like about Lynch's stuff is that you always have a permanent feeling of dread, even when he's being silly. It's clear how much inspiration the Silent Hill series took from his works, as it follows a very similar tone.
That said, I got to the part where
the guy was talking about his spooky dream at the Denny's/IHOP/Whatever. As usual, I'm all about that feeling of dread, even if a jump scare never happens.
When the jump scare actually did happen, I screamed out an obscenity and had to pause the movie as I was literally shaking.

Just the regular old Cheers TV show intro. Nothing at all spooky here.
Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
