I apparently don't know my type match ups..
North is weak to Flying because I thought Ground was. Or at the very least, Flying seemed like it'd be able to harrass a Lazy Pokémon most effectively.
Instead , Electric is apparently resistant to Flying normally (and not just super effective against it)... and ground doesn't care

Alex joins in the Bidoof cleaning efforts, giving each one he picks up a quick check for any unusually shiny patches of fur and a hug before tossing them in with the others.

"Speaking of, are we going to be traveling together? You guys seem like nice people, but I'd hate to be a bother to any of you that might prefer traveling alone?"

Beatrix was disappointed. On one hand, she would have loved it if that Charmander could join their team. On the other... well... having two hotheads on the team this early would prove disastrous. Maybe once she's got some experience (and some gym badges) under her belt, she could ask the Prof for another rematch with his Charmander. Who knows, maybe the Charmander have mellowed out by then.

“An electric specialist? That’s bad… especially for poor Moriarty here.” She pantomimes her fingers to that of lightning, making crackling noises with her mouth, and ends with tickling the Murkrow on her shoulder. Moriarty does not find it amusing, and would nip strands of her hair if not that his beak is kind of restricted on account of the sticky candy. Instead, he merely puffed himself up, failing to make himself intimidating. Tease as she might, she knew to be more serious on the matter.

Beatrix’s Dex soon vibrates as well. As she opens it, notifications of the TMs flare up, as well as a reminder of the numbers show up.

"Sadly, I must be first to admit that my Buizel does not do well versus Electric types."

That makes two of us, she thought to herself. The Dragon Rush attack from Charmander was a nasty surprise. To think of what electric electric attacks would inflict on the Murkrow; she felt a shudder course through her spine.

“… we all need to challenge the same gym? If so, perhaps we should talk about it as a group, and plan our training and travels." Inquisitively, Beatrix opens the small map app on her Dex, noting Kalos’ geography and routes. As well as any notable landmarks and gyms. “ We don't HAVE to start here in Lumiose. Not...not that i'm not stopping anyone from having their shot at Clemont. Just looking at the map here though... well, what’s that saying… all roads lead to Lumiose City. We’re spoiled for choice on where we can go. I count 4, maybe 5 routes connected to the city alone. According to the app, not counting Lumiose, I spy at least 3 gyms to the west, and 4 to the east. Is that correct, Professor?”

"Speaking of, are we going to be traveling together? You guys seem like nice people, but I'd hate to be a bother to any of you that might prefer traveling alone?" the other, calmer young man asked. “I don’t see why not. The more, the merrier. There’s strength in numbers. Only question is where to go… and when to set off.” She inspects the map once more, noting anything with interest as she skims through.

As Discrider noted, you can take Weaknesses and Resistances with very little justification. Dragon Resistance could be a fun one for Moriarty, given that I usually use Dragon as the "jerk bully" Type and I can't see him putting up with that business at all.

That’s sounds like a good compromise. After that Dragon Rush attack, it would make sense. Although I’d probably RP that during our downtime. Right now, adding it after the fight feels a bit like a retcon. Maybe have Beatrix and Moriarty have some alone time to talk about it (is it possible the Murkrow HAD a resistance to it and she didn’t notice it? Her Dex might have been a bit outdated before Sycamore updated it.)

Just a question on TM moves: I take it learning a TM move is the same as learning moves normally? IE. Will it cost you 1 Pokemon XP to learn ‘Screech’ from TM6?

Also, how is downtime treated in this campaign? Will it be similar to the old threads of three separate intervals each day? Will they be done PM, or in an IRC chat?

    Richter pauses for a moment.
"... ah, well... I've already seen the gym in this city, so it might be nice to go check out one of the other ones first?"

Putting his back back into stuffing as many mewling static-y Bidoofs as he can onto the coffee trolley, he continues,
"It's probably better to travel together at the moment anyway.
At least perhaps until we each get a bigger team.
For instance, I doubt that Litwick would have stood up against the Squirtle alone, thankful as I am for the assist.
I doubt we'll be able to pick our battles quite so easily between towns."

    Straightening up, he smiles.
"Unless we all want to take up long-distance running."

Wheeling his trolley across to the pen, he continues,
"Besides, I assume most of us are aiming to get into the League?
If we work together, there's a better chance that one of us will win the competition.
We'd be able to pool our resources to get from town to town, assist each other in getting badges, and train our strongest Pokémon against each other, strengthening them all.
So, not only should we all complete the League challenge, but we would be stronger than if we had completed it separately.
    Hang on."

Rolling the Bidoof ball into one of the intact cages in the other room, Richter ties off the plumbob on the cage and tries to settle their fuzz.
It doesn't seem to do much more than contact with the grounded metal does, but the iron head at least gets through their fur to their main body mass, and that at least seems to speed their release marginally.
It does however protect Richter's fingertips from the sparks.

"There is also the possibility of gaming the League somehow too, I guess.
Not sure how that would work, or whether everything's randomised.
But having a fair few entrants means we could spread ourselves around the championship tree and only see each other in finals, assuming we make it that far.
That's getting a bit ahead of ourselves though."

Walking back into the room, there's another question on Richter's mind.
"Professor, you mentioned Double battles were the primary fighting style in gyms around here, and I assume the League...
    How do they work?
Like are they like that previous battle where our Pokémon did their thing rather independently, or are there fighting styles that allow our two Pokémon to boost each other, or attack all the enemy Pokémon all at once?"

    ~ Sycamore Labs ~

"You've certainly done your research," Sycamore replies to Aleksandr, impressed at the Ace Trainer's planning around local Pokemon. "Rockruff may not be native, but because the more easygoing ones make for an excellent first Pokemon for prospective trainers, or even playmates for children if you keep their rocks filed down so they are not so sharp, I have a small breeding program of them."

"Your Buizel's attack would probably have done much better against the Rock/Normal or Rock/Dark Ruckruff I've seen, but the one you battled is Rock/Ground, though the only Ground move it has at the moment is that Sand Attack you saw. Couldn't say how that allowed it to weather a Fighting move, but I suppose it's just one tough cookie."

"If you were interested in having a Rockruff on your team, perhaps you might consent to take that one for something a bit more long term than a jog around the city? If you taught it to take advantage of its Ground Typing, it could be quite the asset against Clemont, as well as some of the other Gym Leaders."

Gotta palm off all these problem Pokemon to trainers that can hopefully handle them. Hey! Weren't they great in that battle we just had! It was so much fun, wasn't it? You should take them away from my expensive stuff so my insurance premiums go down!

"You don't need to challenge the same Gym, or even travel together, but as the others note, there are benefits in numbers. Many wild Pokemon will be more interested in making you leave their territory than actually hurting you, but being forced to detour or return back to town to heal your Pokemon can be setback enough to think twice about traveling solo. The League Challenge need not be a lonely road, but one traveled with good friends who you can trust to watch your back, and swap stories, TMs, and advice with."

Replying to Beatrix, he adds. "There are Gyms in Shalour, Cyllage, and Coumarine to the west, and in Santalune, Anistar, and Snowbelle to the east. I'd consider Laverre to be more northerly, myself, but it may help to think of Kalos in terms of its 'coastal', 'mountain', and 'central' regions, especially when it comes to which wild Pokemon you may find in the routes."

Fielding Richter's question, he continues. "The double battles may be either with one trainer commanding two Pokemon versus the Gym Leader commanding two Pokemon, or if you have a fellow Challenger you trust, you may Challenge the Gym as a pair in hopes of both coming out of it with a Badge. Gym Leaders tend to be more flexible in scheduling two trainer battles, as they know they're handling two challenges with one battle, as it were." He has to think a bit about the second bit. "Moves and their styles are really more of one of my colleagues specialties than mine, I'm not much of a battler these days, truth be told. I have heard of some Styles that allow allow Pokemon to defend another from attacks, or to boost their abilities, but you may be better off asking someone more informed than I am."

"As for Moves that target more than one opponent, that sounds an awful lot like a Signature Move, you might find someone like a Move Tutor or Gym Leader to ask about those."

TMs just open up new Styles to learn via the usual mechanic of spending 1 Exp, yes.

Speaking of Moves, a Pokemon may have as many learned at one time as they like, but in battle the first four Moves they use are 'locked in' and if you want to use a fifth (or sixth, and so on) Move you will have to use an action called "Refocus" which clears out the locked in Moves and allows you to use another four (in-universe, it would be something like your Pokemon getting set into a certain strategy and the Trainer having to tell them to loosen up in order to switch tactics).

The intent here is to let you prepare for many eventualities and possess counters for several tactics (and not limit you to a measly four Moves), but you can only take advantage of so many of them in any given battle before you have to give up a turn to open up your options again. This helps keeps Pokemon Movelists at a sane length (since you're likely to mostly take advantage of only four Moves at a time) and gives some help to Pokemon that have a trick or two from being instantly countered by something with a zillion Moves learned (so if you decide to train up a tricky-mon of your own, it can be good to save it until later in a battle, when your opponents have hopefully locked themselves out of having a counter to your shenanigans at the ready).

This mechanic interacts weirdly with the current state of Pidgey's Impersonate, but I'll probably just randomly select four Moves to hand over to keep things simple.

Downtime I'm probably opting for a flexible approach to start with, until we figure what works best for the game. If you have some good ideas for what you want to do around town, you can feel free to pursue those without worrying too much about time constraints, and on the other hand if all you really have time for is to spend your Exp and recover your Trait tokens and Voltage, that's fine too and you shouldn't worry about falling behind the other players.

If you've got a lot of stuff you want to do, we can take it to irc and post a summary afterward like the good old days of Gym Battles (#voltage on Rizon.net is still around, and I'm on there everyday for several hours in the west coast morning/afternoon). PMs can also work, though if I have time to reply to a PM, I probably have time to post in the thread, so eh.

"If you were interested in having a Rockruff on your team, perhaps you might consent to take that one for something a bit more long term than a jog around the city?"

The Professor's offer slowly sank in, and Aleksandr looked towards Volnoy for a moment.

"Let us take your Rockruff for a run later," the Sinnoh trainer hazards, "And see how they and Volnoy get on together, outside of a battle."

Here, the Buizel nods his head, and folds his arms again with a solid, "Bui," of assent.

"I am sure an experienced battler like Volnoy would have much to teach, and your Rockruff also has tricks Volnoy could benefit from, I am sure. Da, let us see how they work together, if you are sure you could part with them." He almost manages to keep the excitement out of his voice. "And I have done much research on the area before coming here. With that in mind, maybe Santalune and the nearby forest would be a good first place to visit if we were to stick together. I hear it is a popular place for fresh trainers to start their adventures here in Kalos. The Gym leader uses Bug type Pokémon, according to the brochure I read. The nearby forest is famous for Bug types too, as well as the most favourite electric rat in every Pokédex." Here, Aleksandr pulls a face, while Volnoy holds his nose and waves a paw back and forth as if wafting away a bad smell.
I forgot to ask what time of day it was, and if there were any plans before resting! Also, does anyone want to either join Aleksandr, Volnoy and the Professor's Rockruff on their morning run and training time? Alternately, does anyone want to be 'discovered' in a café when Al and co. return from their run?

"Well of course we're staying together!" Jim insists. "That's the whole point, isn't it? Going on an adventure, meeting people, making friends! That's the whole point of the League!" When Al mentions Santalune, Jim nods agreement. "Seems like a solid place to start. I'll bet Eli can show those bugs a thing or two." He flips open his Pokedex to check out the area around Santalune. "Looks like a nice little trip. Works for me! Anyone else?"

Prof. Sycamore responded to Beatrix's question.

“Huh, never thought about it like that. Kinda like how my home’s separated into three masses. Western, Central and Eastern Unova…”

While the Ace Trainer and his trusted Buizel tuned their noses on mentioning the infamous mascot, Beatrix skimmed through her Pokedex on electric rodents, then giggled. “Didn’t know Dedenne was THAT popular here in Kalos,” she kidded. “Still, I’m sure a Pikachu might give you a run for your money if you underestimate ‘em. If Prof.’s demonstration proved anything today, is that even the most little guy packs a wallop if you take it too lightly.” She nodded to Moriarty, who was too busy not stifling a laugh at the sea weasel Pokemon's stance.

"Well of course we're staying together!" Jim insisted. Wait, wasn’t it Joe? I really DO have to pay attention when people say their names. "That's the whole point, isn't it? Going on an adventure, meeting people, making friends! That's the whole point of the League!"

“Hear, hear! Looking forward to joining y’all in this wondrous adventure. But first, I got some things to settle here in Lumiose. Most notably, the Looker Bureau, followed by purchasing some supplies here in this fantastic city. A good potion or two wouldn’t hurt anyone.”

"Say, Aleksandr... you said you were going for some jogging later? Mind if lil' old me can tag along? Gotta train myself up if I ever do get inducted into being a proper Detective someday. Just like Looker." The Murkrow merely eyerolls at her request. Woo needs running when you got wings?

Considering that Beatrix is training herself to become a proper Detective on the field, some morning exercise would be right on her alley. Of course, Al would be a much more agile runner on account of his Mobility.

When Beatrix asks about jogging, Aleksandr raises a hand. "Al, please. No need to be so formal." 'But never Sasha,' he thinks to himself.

"Da, we could go jogging. There is a sport popular here in Kalos that I have been learning about, called parkour. Perhaps I could show you a little as we run. It could be useful when chasing a lead!" There's a genuine grin, there. "I plan to become a professional trainer, and athlete. Becoming a Detective must take much work and study, many things to master." He glances to the other trainers, and asks, "Alex, Richter, Jim. What do you three plan to study and practice? And does anyone have a mind for new companions to find and train on their journey? I already mentioned some that I was thinking would be a good match with my Volnoy."

"Study and practice?" Jim asks. "Well, I mean, I gotta master the three elements. So electricity of course... and then ice. Or water. It's not really clear. A Water type would be a good start, but as for specifics, well, I'll know it when I know it."
My hope for Jim is a team of misfits and rejects who become strong when they evolve, hence why my original starting idea was Magikarp. The ones I kinda had in mind were Feebas and either Mareep or Elekid, but of those only Mareep is a Kalos native.

That is, unless someone else wants to drag North along."

"Oh, and perhaps we should wait until after the rain stops before going jogging?

And I should probably give this towel back, for that matter.

Do status boost moves have to be split between different attributes, or could you have a +2 boost to a single attribute?

So what's the difference between the TMs we just earned and the moves we already had access to?

You can have single +2 boost to one stat (or a single -2 Harass to one stat).
    Terrendos wrote: »

A Status category Boost deals no damage, but the effect is +2 to any stat, or +1 to two stats. Status Category Harass deals no damage, but is a -2 to any stat, or -1 to two stats.

As opposed to the Boost/Harass you could already learn which could deal Physical or Special damage, but was only a +1/-1 to a stat.

When Jim mentions 'the three elements', Aleksandr looks vaguely confused. "There are eighteen types," he offers. "Of those, at least six are 'elements'. Though maybe you want to start with the traditional Fire, Water and Grass." He catches his towel as Richter tosses it in his direction, then wrings out as much of the damp as he can, nodding his thanks.

Where to go from here? I got the idea from the initial post that it was evening, but I could have been wrong. Rain makes it seem later as a rule.

@Marshmallow - Would I be able to teach Volnoy a move akin to Crunch? It's learned natively by Buizel/Floatzel, gives some good type coverage, and is a good contender for a Harassing move targetting Defence or Sp.Defence. I mean, I'm obviously not going to try and teach Volnoy something like Thunder Punch. Ice Punch could be a possibility, though. May take a tutor or TM at your discretion.

Scheduled meeting with a professor during what seems to be 'business' hours makes me think morning/afternoon, but if the group wants to get to a fresh day quickly we can assume later.

Crunch would be fine. Having gone through games attempting to do mono-ghost teams several times, I'm well aware of how many pokemon learn that horrible move.

“Alright then… Mr. Al.” Beatrix snickered. “Sorry, couldn’t help myself. In all seriousness, It’ll be fun to talk to someone while jogging. Moriarty here isn’t much for conversations when I’m exercising… though he seems to enjoy seeing me running behind him while he’s soaring through the skies.”

The young lady pondered to herself when the Ace Trainer asked them about what Pokémon they would like to witness. What strange creatures were home to Kalos? She’ll have to delve into the Pokedex during her off hours and see just what might aid her burgeoning career as a potential Detective.

“Thanks Al." she heard the man known as Richter toss a damp towel to Al. “Oh right, I’m so sorry about earlier. Rude of me, it really is.” She makes her way to the researcher. “Beatrix Spencer, at your service!” she smiles, all the while offering her hand.

It's possible foreign trainers might be able to trade the more exotic 'mons later down the line. As for getting a Magikarp early without a fishing rod, well... DO I have a deal for you!

As for Beatrix's Pokemon choices, she's pretty much open to anything that strikes her fancy at this point, though she might start looking for more Pokemon with outside utility and assists to help out in her career as a Detective. Abilities like echolocation and natural radar senses (Zubat, Noibat and Audino come to mind), mind/thought/emotion reading (any psychic type really), a sniffer/guard dog 'mon like Growlithe or the Lillipup line, and of course some heavy muscle/intimidating looking Pokes.

I'd say so, yes. You certainly don't have to stick to canon movesets, let alone canon moves. If it seems plausible and something you'll have fun with, you should go for it.

@Kay, I think you can just make whatever move you want, as long as you fit it into one of the Styles we have access to. If I wanted to teach Elijah Hydro Pump, and make it a Physical Ice type Mobile Move, I could.

@Marshmallow so just to clarify, if I made a move like Recover [Status/Boost (HP)/Normal] then I would gain 2 to the HP stat... and therefore gain 4 Stamina, correct? Seems like that's not worthwhile for very long, once Pokemon start hitting double digit Stamina.

I think it would be +2 Stamina, and increase the Pokemon's max Stamina by 4, so you'd get a +[||--] to your statline. (talked about that here).

It's not great for straight up healing, but if something is trying to take advantage of Harass (HP) you can shut that down hard, it increases the amount of healing you can do with a Recovering style move (which is probably more what you're looking for in Recover), and it has a few interactions with possible Abilities down the line (like triggering Blaze earlier).

    It has a few niches.

    What's in there?
She can't be a scientist too.

Well yes, I think it's time to be off. We've got most of those mice back in the other room, and we have a lot of shopping and running to do.
Come on North, we have a comfy Pokeball to find for you.

    North is currently asleep.
Firmly attached to the coffee trolley that we're not taking from the good professor.
    Richter sighs.

Richter walks into the other room briefly before returning with his other personal effects.
A rather pungent odour fills the room as Richter approaches his Geodude with his steamed Marill cloth.
Okay, time to go., he whispers to North.
Richter rubs the cloth across the top of North's head, arcs lacing out onto the metallic terminals ridging it.
The is a a soft clank as the electric Pokemon releases its grip on the cart, and Richter carefully lifts North up onto his chest.
Richter continues polishing North, as a gravelly purr starts up from the sleepy Pokemon.

Okay, I'm going shopping, so when and where do we want to meet up again?
Perhaps we should set out soon on the next route?
Or we could spend the night here, if we want to get some things done before we leave?

Seems like Santalune is the preferred destination, presumably via Route 4, after some measure of shopping/training/slumming around in Lumiose City.

If you like, you may come up with a list of the kind of things you're looking to buy/find, and I can try as best I can to accommodate. One of the nice things about the system is if you're going through the trouble of tracking something down, I can safely assume you are challenging me to make you use it. Buying an Ultra Ball means "hey, I want a tough foe worth catching in one of these!" and buying certain TMs could very well mean "The next encounter would be great if it would let me show off this new Move at its best!" and so on and so forth.

Similar ideas will be at play once you start exploring Routes. In a PbP there's not much point to slowing things down in battles no one really cares much about, so if there's Pokemon you want to find or scenarios you're interested in playing out, don't be afraid to speak up (especially if you're the one spending the Mobility token to be the navigator). An encounter against your typical first route rodents and birds gets a lot more interesting if you're saving a Pokemon you'd like to catch from a swarm of them than if they just showed up and attacked apropos of nothing. Give me things to work with and I'll do my best to pleasantly surprise you.

In that vein, if you want to split off from the group for some solo action, feel free to do so. It's convenient if the group sticks together in their broad town-to-town travels, but if you want to run off and have a quick trainer battle, Pokemon encounter, or NPC chit-chat, that's not the sort of thing that will make this system (or this GM, I trust) stumble.

Seems like Santalune is the preferred destination, presumably via Route 4, after some measure of shopping/training/slumming around in Lumiose City.

Looks like it. Since Al and Beatrix will be jogging sometime tomorrow morning, I take it we'll all meet up and set off noon(ish)?
If you like, you may come up with a list of the kind of things you're looking to buy/find, and I can try as best I can to accommodate.

I take it we can post the lists here in the thread? Or post them via a PM to you?

Either or, as you're comfortable with/as befits your character's secretiveness.

The strong smell of ozone and lanolin causes Aleksandr's nose to wrinkle for real, now. But as it's right around the time he's dissing Pikachu, it's hard to realise it's a reaction. "Volnoy and I will return to our lodgings, and perhaps go shopping before evening. Beatrix, let us meet at the Prism Tower tomorrow at eight, then afterwards we can take coffee and breakfast at a café?" He then turns to the Professor, and tilts his head towards the Pokéballs at Sycamore's waist. "I will be dropping by the Pokémon Center to attend to Volnoy after the fight, would you like us to heal your Rockruff too, and perhaps spend some time this evening? I shall return after breakfast tomorrow, to see how you think they are getting on.
As mentioned, Al would be looking for a Ralts (male, preferably), Riolu, and possibly a Fletchling as Pokémon that hang out in this general area. Maybe a Zigzagoon for old time's sake nearer Santalune, but I'll let Tommy/Alex call dibs on that if he wanted one!

"Yeah, guess I better hit up the Mart too. Buy some PokeBalls... maybe a Potion or two... and a big bag of macarons, of course! Then I guess I'll head to the Center and get an early night."
I'm fine to move on to next morning. Marsh, gonna have Jim buy a handful of Pokeballs (~4) and a couple of Potions, but based on your description of voltage expenditure none of that would require spending voltage or listing in my possessions.

Are we staying in the hotel in Lumiose, or somewhere else? Pokécenters in other towns?

i wanna hit a pokecenter and catch some 'mons, personally. I don't really mind whichever route the group wants to hit up. Is there anything to catch in the city itself?

Also, I'll try to write a post tonight, sorry for the lag. Family is coming down from Ireland and I have to somehow balance cleaning the house and getting my PlayStation fix

“Beatrix, let us meet at the Prism Tower tomorrow at eight, then afterwards we can take coffee and breakfast at a café?" Al requests.

“I’d appreciate it, thanks.” The junior detective answered. “I would love to see this ‘parkour’ thing you mentioned earlier. Sounds like it’ll be a blast!”

The Murkrow, now finally free from his self-inflicted muteness via toffee induced guzzling, starts cawing, even more so when Jim mentions macaroons in the same room.

“Yeah, yeah. Don’t worry Moriarty. First thing we’re doing is going to town and buying supplies… AND some delicious delights. Just you an' me, kid. Painting the town...err... black, I guess. After that…”

Beatrix turned her gaze to Sycamore. “Professor. You mentioned the Looker Bureau earlier. Do you have the address to said establishment by any chance? Or know by any chance if they’ll be open late this afternoon?”

Moriarty, in the meantime, flies toward one of the computer towers in the vicinity. As he lands, he notices something hiding behind it, promting a menacing squawk, only to reveal another Bidoof (this one was dozing off, having found a nice, snug spot to rest). Released abruptly from its nap, the alarmed rodent gives a loud grunt at the accursed fiend, and scurries back through the hole where its compatriots were being held. Maybe there it can find some rest from grumpy birds. The Murkrow, on the other hand, merely remains perched on the tower, getting impatient with all this idling.

As for Pokémon preferences (at least, for the trip to Santalune City) either a Pancham, a Combee♀️, or a Sentret, would be adequate. Otherwise, anything else would suffice. Beatrix does not have that much encyclopaedic knowledge as Al, but she would like to capture at least one 'mon on her trip to Santalune City.

As for supplies, a few Pokéballs (2-3), two potions and three Full Heals (if possible, otherwise 3 Antidotes and 3 Paralyze Heals as sufficient substitutes). Not sure if the Status Effect items (specifically the Full Heals) would need a Voltage token. Oh, and some delicious sable for our greedy Murkrow.

"For the duration of your journey, you will be covered for the 'room and board' at any Pokemon Center, as well as a number of hotels and residences that have been League-approved. You are also covered for local transportation, and in some few cases inter-city travel, though you should mostly be using the Routes to travel from town to town. Now that you are a League Challenger, you may view, using your Pokedex, which amenities and services you may freely use. And I suggest you pay close attention to them so that you do not find yourself faced with an unfortunate bill in the morning or your bus trip stopping in the middle of nowhere for a two hour seminar on Alolan timeshare property."

So Pokécenters will be our go to places where we can rest and relax. As for the hotel, we can always check up on our MarshmallowPokéDex. Unless you're referring to Hotel Richissime, I think that might be a tad more expensive for the League. Up to Marsh though.

    Downtime:
Richter would like to buy some pokeballs of various sorts, a bag of white sand, a poncho, and probably some Pokepuffs too.
    Also an assortment of potions/antidotes.
    Not sure if rocks burn.
Note: Do rocks burn? I guess they can freeze. Paralysis? He sleeps a lot already
Will store pokeballs in a belt test tube rack if he can find pokeballs small enough, because test tubes are cool.
Albeit fragile. Pyrex maybe? I don't know if they make them in Pyrex.

As for Pokémon, Richter is interested in phenomena, so he'd be very interested in any Pokémon that has different characteristics from ones that he's already seen, and less interested in Pokémon that are strictly physical in operation. Like rats. And birds. Normal/Fighting types are 'uninteresting' I guess.
Alternatively, he could go full Robotnik and just collect steel/electric types that ride each other with [Metalmorph], although probably not.

Probably Pokemon in the city to catch if you want to hunt them down, yeah. Wild Pokemon that have learned to navigate the alleys and rooftops, and naturally occurring weirdness like Trubbish (which I am so happy is Kalos native).

And no worries. Take care of your family stuff, the Pokemon will still be here when you've got time.

I figure the best way to do things is figure everyone has sufficient access to slow-to-apply, slow-to-act healing items to keep their Pokemon tip-top shape so long as you have a few minutes to fiddle with your backpack, spray potions, and wrap bandages. Not useful for in the middle of a fight, however

Very fast acting medicine would be in the realm of super potions and Full Heals that you could spend a voltage to pull out of your backpack retroactively. There's nothing stopping you from buying them ahead of time, but there's also nothing stopping you from leaving the purchase ambiguous until you actually need it. (Also things like X-Attacks or X-Defends and such, if you have Voltage to blow on Boost effects).

The sort of thing you would buy ahead of time would be like Max Revives or Full Restores. Battle-changers that let me know "Hey, I'm prepared for a really hard battle, oblige me!"

I'm thinking if you go outside Pokecenter housing you're looking more on the motel side of things, yeah. Maybe when you start getting badges (and especially if you let your matches get televised and they get a lot of viewers) the League might be willing to comp some more expensive stuff (or you could cut out the middle-man and see about getting some sponsors. Pokemon battling is a sport, of sorts.)

    ~ Sycamore Labs ~

"Well, it is a shame you are all heading out so soon, and won't have much time to enjoy Lumiose, but I am glad you are taking your Challenges with such seriousness," the Professor says in response to the group's rapidly finalizing plans. "And of course you will be back sooner or later to move on to other parts of the region, please do not hesitate to stop in then, and let me know how you are faring in your journey."

"That sounds like an excellent plan," he says at Aleksandr's suggestion, unclasping the Pokeball containing the passed out Ruckruff and handing it over. The Ace Trainer's Pokedex pings as the temporary change of trainer is uploaded to the League database, and the Puppy Pokemon's data is downloaded into the device. "I will see the three of you tomorrow, bon courage!"

Beatrix's question gets the Professor's attention. "Hmm? You can reach the Looker Bureau by heading due north from the lab until you are just past the Rouge Plaza, and it will be on the left side of the street opposite the Sushi High Roller. I am not sure of the exact address, though I expect you could easily look it up on your Pokedex."

"I believe the young lady practically lives at the Bureau. I am certain if she is not out on pressing business she would make time to talk shop with another fine detective. If she is in fact out, I suppose you can make an appointment with one of her assistants, hopefully for before you intend to leave the city?"

"Oh, we'll be back," Aleksandr assures the Professor, after securing the Rockruff's Pokéball next to Volnoy's on his belt. "Does your Rockruff have a name?" he then asks.

Volnoy makes a rude noise, and squirts a jet of water out of the corner of his mouth, before sauntering over to lean against Al's leg. He then rubs his bruised nose, and grumbles. Al lowers a hand to rub around the base of his Buizel's crest, and the Sea Weasel Pokémon seems somewhat mollified after a moment.

So is Al leaving immediately for the Forest? I could see Alex going either with him or with Beatrix to the Bureau to look for some poor street Pokémon that need a home after hitting a Pokecenter for some balls and healing

The timeline appears to be that the group is spending the rest of the day in the city, doing shopping and taking care of a few errands like training, making pokecenter room reservations and such (and Beatrix is possibly visiting the Looker Bureau).

The following day Beatrix and Al are meeting at the Prism tower to go for a jog with their Pokemon, and I believe the plan thereafter is for the group to meet up later in the morning to take Route 4 to Santalune City. The Santalune Forest is past that, so would be a potential area to explore as a group or during downtime after reaching the City.

  • KayKay What we need... Is a little bit of PANIC.Registered User regular
Yeah, Al was going to heal the Rockruff and Volnoy at the Pokécenter, then do some shopping and training/getting to know you stuff with the puppymon. Tomorrow was the jog, then setting off for Santalune, hopefully with a new addition to Al's team~

"I'd appreciate that, Professor. Thank you! Though... I gotta be honest. I wouldn't call myself a fine detective just yet. But by the time I'm done with this Challenge, I'll hopefully be just as good, if not better."

"If anyone else wants to tag along with lil' ole me to the Bureau, we can meet up at the Pokeceneter in..." she flips through her Pokedex, searching for any centers in town. After finding her target, she continues, "Middle of downtown Lumiose, just near the Tower."

She skims to her watch app on the Dex. "Daylight's burning, and so is my patience! Time waits for no 'mon'." She stifles a giggle. " Let's go, Moriarty... time to see a man about a sablé! See you all later!" Beatrix leaves the room, making her way to the Lab's front door.

 As the young trainer leaves the room in a hurry, Moriarty gives a mocking salute and a cackling caw (which roughly translates to 'smell ya later' to any Pokemon in the vicinity), followed by lifting off and trailing behind Beatrix, relieved to be out of the stuffy room.
    The schedule afaik:
    Today, afternoon:
-Everyone: Buy supplies, train, find and catch mons in the city, see the sights etc.

    Late Afternoon/Evening:
    -Everyone else: Shenanigans(?)
    -Beatrix: Looker Bureau

    Next day, Morning:
-Al and Beatrix's most excellent adventure (tm).
-Al returns to Sycamore Labs with the Rockruff.

    Afterwards:
-Off to Route 4 and Santalune City, for 'Plot and Profit' (tm).

Also going to throw a !Ready here, for good measure.

Are we going to be doing the ol' time paradox method of resolving all this stuff? Because otherwise it sounds like most of us will be waiting around while Al and Bea do their thing. Or I guess we could come up with city hijinks.
