As I'm currently enjoying the heck out of Twin Peaks season 3, I've been meaning to check out more of Lynch's previous work.

So I started watching Mulholland Dr. on Netflix. I know nothing about this movie beyond it being one of the higher recommended Lynch stuff.

The thing I really like about Lynch's stuff is that you always have a permanent feeling of dread, even when he's being silly. It's clear how much inspiration the Silent Hill series took from his works, as it follows a very similar tone.

That said, I got to the part where
the guy was talking about his spooky dream at the Denny's/IHOP/Whatever. As usual, I'm all about that feeling of dread, even if a jump scare never happens.

When the jump scare actually did happen, I screamed out an obscenity and had to pause the movie as I was literally shaking.

    Fuck you/Thank you, David Lynch.

    That scene
is legit one of the most frightening scenes I have ever seen in a movie.

I bet it has nothing to do with the movie, either.

I'm noticing more and more that Lynch likes to insert what was probably a short story or idea he had into his works, as if taking advantage of whatever current budget he gets to work with.

Lynch's works are closer to novels than tv or film I think, in that there can be a long segment that just seems to be its own thing that serves as reinforcement of the themes, but not as tightly connected as we're used to for media compared to a hefty book

Does anyone remember who posted a story here from when they were a kid/teenager, walking through the woods with some friends and heading to a cabin, and being followed by someone or something that also tried to get in the house? And I think, whatever it was spoke through the door and tried to convince them it was another friend of theirs

I feel like it possibly had something to do with a Native American legend

I am pretty sure you're thinking of a story I remember from one of the /r spooky archives about a kid on vacation in the South hanging out with his cousins and that sort of thing ensued.

Is that the one where they went back later and burned it down? I tried to search through the archives, but couldn't come up with the right combination of search terms. Which is surprising, because it seems like it's mentioned and reposted every few years or so.

so I haven't had a migraine in a while, but they are incapacitating when I do

late last night, I was walking up to my front door and the porch light dies with a little pop and I notice that

against the big oak tree next to my house, I catch a glimpse of somebody leaning. They were just a silhouette, like they were under a soft gray light that just kind of highlighted them, without being bright enough to discern any details

and I'm staring at it, trying to... put this image together I guess? Like when you see a monster in your bedroom, but then you focus and realize that it's just a coat thrown over a chair or something

then it pops off like a fucking flashbang and immediately it feels like someone is trying to force my eyes through the back of my head. it hurt so bad and the accompanying phosphenes from this migraine just

burn that silhouette into my vision

so I spent like an hour lying on the floor in my living room with my eyes closed, in agony, forced to contemplate this thing

Hey folks, I'm wondering if y'all can help me with some brainstorming.

I'm working on my Halloween ideas for this year, and I think I'm locked in to a pretty solid theme. The plan is to do an infernal casino sort of affair, with my costume being a white suit style Lucifer (along the lines of Sandman or The Wicked + The Divine). I'll set up some card tables, maybe some craps or roulette, learn how to cheat at cards again, that sort of thing.

The primary room in my apartment is a big ol' great room, and this is what I'm planning on turning into the gambling hall. It's all dark wood paneled walls and high ceilings, and I'm planning on hanging some dark/heavy curtains to drop the light level even lower and get some luxurious upscale underground casino feel going.

There's a couple of things I'm trying to work out still though, and that's where I could use some help.

    - I'm worried about getting across infernal as well as gambling hall. Current ideas I've floating are (fake) neon signs of occult symbols, an activated charcoal cocktail menu, and a variety of small decorative touches with the gambling equipment (custom playing cards and chips, carved bone dice, that sort of thing). But none of it seems terribly big, you know? I don't want anyone to be confused at exactly what sort of establishment they're frequently.
    - This decoration plan is great for the main room, but I also have an open kitchen that people will need to pass through and a large porch space that I'd like to be able to use. I have pretty much no ideas for these rooms. Also the bathroom, but the bathroom has historically been the easiest room to decorate (and also traditional the scariest, somehow).
    - I don't actually enjoy gambling myself, and have only ever like, walked through a casino, so I have very little practical experience with some of this stuff. I know a lot of the basics, and learned to cheat at cards back when I learned magic, but I'm worried that I'm gonna miss something still. Any less than obvious ideas I should be thinking of?

That sounds really cool! There are as many depictions of Hell as there are artists, obviously, but this is what came to mind: I think a casino run by Lucifer would be super classy, but also... off. As with a real casino, he'd want people to have every opportunity to enjoy themselves to excess. Unlike a real casino, there would also be clear indicators everywhere of what the place is, because in the end, Lucifer is all about free will.*

Random ideas that may or may not be useful:
    • Demon dealers are mandatory, really, if you have people willing to play that role for the night. Ideally you'd want them to dress real classy like.
    • Shine red light on the walls. You probably don't want to rely entirely on red light - people need to be able to see what they're doing and also show off their costumes - but the color will show on the walls and provide cheap atmosphere.
    • Print some renaissance paintings of hell and display them in frames on the wall.
    • If you have the time and you're feeling ambitious, you could make a large pair of wings out of craft foam and hang them on the wall like a trophy... preferably as the centerpiece of the room, so they immediately grab people's attention when they come in. (The tutorial is for cosplay wings, which are necessarily heavily reinforced. Since yours wouldn't need to be worn and would only be visible from one side, you could probably get away with just gluing "feathers" to a cardboard base.)
    • Strategically placed glowing coals.
    • Bottled souls displayed behind the bar, maybe labeled with names.
    • If you can figure out a safe and convenient way to do it, you could heat the poker chips and/or dice so that they're unnaturally warm when first handed to a guest.
    • Decadent (or at least decadent-looking) hors d'oeuvres featuring lots of black and red: classic colors for sex and pleasure, but also for temptation and ruin. (Black forest cupcakes are basically perfect in this regard! Ditto black tortilla chips.)
    • If you're getting custom stuff, maybe work in a theme of gambling with units of time instead of money. If somebody loses all their chips, have them give you a name in order to get more.

*edit: or that's one interpretation, anyway. I suppose it depends on your Lucifer.

Also, yesterday morning, woke up too early before a closing shift, decided to take a nap, ended up with sleep paralysis and what seemed like forever trying to yell to get Nuka's attention to come shake me.

It's really had to yell when can be awake but not work any muscles in your face or neck and you're basically trying to breath out really hard. Also I was on my back with my arms crossed in an odd way and that's where the crushing sensation came from.
