There was a message on the website that said to run it as admin the first time because of some issue, maybe try that?

Turns out I needed to delete my Battlenet folder in ProgramData. Old Agent files in there were causing problems with the downloader.

the old starcraft isn't compatible since it runs on b.net 1.0

i don't think they mentioned any integration with 2.0 for remastered. have they?

They haven't, but they are having a lot of other non gameplay quality of life changes to the game, so it's not impossible

    i certainly hope they do

I am curious where the line is.

Personally I'd love grid keys, but is that going too far?

I'd also like a non-black min map at the start, so people who don't know the map could at least see where the expansions are.

Would this break the game or is this quality of life stuff for people wanting to get into the game?

Any change will have people arguing both. I suspect they'll make the bare minimum of changes personally.

Team Liquid seems to be 110% negative on the new patch. Me? Seems to be just like old Starcraft but without palette problems.

I think they will change the hotkeys, but there's no way they change the black map. Those two things aren't even on the same level.

Y'know, now that I think about it, they're setting themselves up nicely for a vanilla/chocolate split. Want Old Brood War? We got dat. You want Brood War with some QoL changes like fog of war instead of entirely black maps etc? We got that too.

Might split the playerbase, but I don't think they're overly concerned about that.

You know what would be great for the remaster, archon mode.

There is so much to balance in the game that it help to have two people managing everything.

They called it 'team melee' in BW.

I used to play a lot of team melee, its fun! My micro is pretty bad, but I can generally macro somewhat passably

My memory is hazy at best but I remember team melee as being slight different then archon mode.

Couldn't you play as different races on the same base or something weird like that?

Yeah, it's slightly different; if you chose different races then you got workers from all the races you chose. But I played a lot of TM in Brood War in ways that were functionally identical to archon mode.

Honestly I think I prefer regular 2v2 to archon. The issue is bring completely unfamiliar with your partner's race. Micro is micro but I know how roaches work, or mutas, I don't know how to correctly use adepts or do medical drops. I would assume similar problems exist for the brood war equivalents.

  • UselesswarriorUselesswarrior Registered User regular
I think the game is balanced around 1on1 though, 2v2 often feels like a second class citizen.

oh it definitely is. 2v2 being anything resembling balanced is just a happy side effect. which is unfortunate because i tend to find it more interesting than the way archon handles things.

Your link is broken, fixed it in the quote above.

As a software developer and supporter of free software, I'm a bit disappointed that Blizzard hasn't open sourced their classic games and turned it over to the community. Don't get me wrong, I love how long they support things, but there was something magical about the source port scene for Doom and I'm sad we will never get that for Blizzard games.

Saw that trailer on rotterdam's stream yesterday and it looked awesome. I'll be honest I'll probably buy it, play a handful of times and then just go back to SC2. I'm hoping that I enjoy I more but I'm not expecting to going in.

Am I crazy, or does that thumbnail not have anything to do with the trailer?

I frankly think the SC1/BW storyline is miles, MILES better than the ridiculous SC2 teenage love drama.

I've been listening to the whole plot-line while working and it's been a lot of fun.

I had forgotten just how much of a bad-ass Tassadar and Zeratul were. Like, way way more bad-ass than what SC2 has (the only exception being General Warfield).

Even Raynor has actual cojones in this one.

I want to play through sc1 (base and be) again at some point because when I see people describe the story vs SC2 it isn't anything like what I remember. It's been so long I am chalking to up to faulty memory

I can't wait to play through Brood War single-player. If memory serves me correctly, I didn't touch the brood war campaign at all.

Also, should be fun playing the revamped original, just for the sake of it.

The Brood War intro is probably one of my favorite cutscenes out of Blizzard's entire repertoire. Dark, moody, tense and dripping with plot.

For the time it was released, the fire from Stukov's lighter was some insanely next level animation. I would lose my shit every time I saw it.

It is really a shame they couldn't rerender the CG cutscenes for the remaster. So many of them were iconic.

I am not convienced their replacement is a good thing.

Are they being replaced? I thought the motion comic stuff was on top of that. (Speculation was that they're replacing the "talking heads" briefings.)

  • UselesswarriorUselesswarrior Registered User regular
    Oh, perhaps I misunderstood.

Either way, the original files for those cutscenes are apparently lost to the ages.

I've recently watched one of Day9's videos about why SCBW was so cool and it got me thinking about how fun SCBW was back in the day, and why I found SC2 so much less fun even though I really wanted to have fun with it.

In a word for me: deathballs. Two words? Anyways... Stuff was so spread out in SCBW and like Day9 was saying, it's just damned hard to get anything to do anything, and that itself makes weird, fun stuff happen. It influences strategies and gives the game depth.

I didn't get LotV because I just didn't think I'd actually have fun with it, but I wonder if SCBW HD would actually be a good buy for me. Then again I remember crying in a corner of my room at one point (I was a kid) because no matter how much I practiced I couldn't get good at SCBW, haha. Oh the "fun"!

Imagine what sc2 would be like if there were a 12-20 unit selection limit. I feel like that right there would change the game in some very drastic ways.
