Neiman realizes the Deep Woods is a dangerous place and out of his deep concern for Malachi, he has to prevent him from going.

I can't remember his age but technically as kids get older and they grow larger, the begin to get gaps in their teeth before getting to the point where they lose them. It could be a sign he's been there long enough that his jaw has become larger and he is about to get ready to lose teeth again.
