But I'm not actually watering any animals, I just coopted a small pet bottle for my own nefarious, robotics related purposes. I needed a one way passive flow valve at a very small scale, and it's surprisingly hard to find an industrial option. At least a cheap one. Those lixit bottles look great, but sadly are far too big.

Im bitching in here because as Chris says, the seal is very poor, but a decent check valve at that size is bloody hard to find. So I'm using liquid rubber to try to get a better stop. Hopefully it worked, I left it drying overnight. I'll go check today.

If the liquid stuff doesn't work out, maybe try Sugru? It's moldable rubber that starts out with the consistency of putty, so you could probably mold up your own little seal with a bit more control over the final shape.

I've also had success molding valves with 2-part silicon and a waxed-up 3D-printed negative, though that might not give you the detail you need at a size so small, and the results are pretty similar to what you would get with Sugru anyway I'd expect.

There are diaphragm check valves for 1/8th inch tubing, but they might be too long for your needs. Are you basically making a supply/tank for microfluidic robots?

    I fucking hate sugru

Edit: I've got lots of options, I was just clarifying a little more to explain that I don't actually need to give any small animals water

The problem with the drippers leaking is that the stamped end of the cheap tube they use doesn't seal very well around the ball. If it was an injection-moulded piece of nylon instead it would have a much higher chance of sealing on the ball bearing. The problem is that making it out of nylon with a thick enough wall to give it enough strength to prevent breakage and still fit between the wires of the enclosure would be difficult, and might require a much more exotic material which would increase costs again.

Delrin or vespel time. There a bunch of sites that do short run additive manufacturing, not sure of all the material choices, but making a CAD model of the straw/tube would be straight forward. Could also have a sealing profile at the tip that's a better match to the ball. Maybe use an actual ball bearing as well for its much tighter tolerances.

I feel like I could make a small fortune just turning small parts on my lathe/mill for a reasonable cost.

Delrin is very machinable, so yeah, maybe! I'm tempted to get like a desktop CNC machine. It would be way more versatile than a 3d printer, but my impression is that good ones are less common and stuff that's out there that is less than $2k are primarily for engraving or wood. I don't need to cut titanium (though it would be super sweet) but I could do plenty with aluminum.

Things I did not snap at the grumpy old man who spent an hour and a half at my reference desk trying to download a comic book to a Kindle ereader and then to his phone when that didn't work:

    1. Your cellular data is not faster than our wifi. I'm sorry, it just isn't, and if you would connect to our damn wifi I would prove it to you.
    2. Your Kindle is never going to display comics panel by panel the way your phone does, because it does not support that format. It does not, never has done, and never will do. You have purchased the wrong product for your needs, and no amount of troubleshooting will fix that.
    3. Tapping the same button over and over again because your slow-ass cellular data is taking forever to load everything does nothing but reset the slow-ass loading process.
    4. Double-tapping resets the slow-ass loading process at best, and often means you tap the wrong button on the next page when it miraculously loads and everything goes to shit.
    5. If you follow my instructions, your problem will be solved. If you continue doing the same dumb shit you were doing over and over while saying "wait, I want to try something first," your problem will continue, and honestly you could have done that at home and left me out of it.
    6. Listen, I know it was like an hour and a half ago, but can we revisit the cellular data thing? Like, I want to explain all the problems with that statement so badly it makes my teeth itch, but I can't reliably convince you that you're still in the Overdrive app and not in the Kindle app, so I guess I'm just going to bottle that up until it turns into brain cancer.
    7. When a webpage tells you that your password is incorrect, the most likely explanation is that you typed in the wrong password. This is, in fact, practically the only explanation. I'm honestly not sure what you expect a librarian to do that will resolve this situation to your satisfaction.

As far as CNC, you can build your own for far less. A raspberry pi can actually act as the controller, and most hardwired Dremel tools can act as the spindle, if you cut slow (especially on delrin).

Well it finally happened, I was in a car accident today while transporting passengers while out rideshare driving. We were on the 405 heading north and traffic came to a sudden stop. I stopped with room between my car and the car ahead of me, and the guy behind me in a big ol' Lincoln Navigator also managed to stop just in time. There were two motorcycles behind him that weren't able to stop and hit the Lincoln at a pretty high rate of speed, hard enough to shove the Lincoln into the back of my car.

I and my passengers were fine and my car just had some scuffs and a little dent, but one of the guys on the motorcycles was really badly injured. Like, unresponsive and in convulsions. It was really messed up and I still can't quite process it.

Yeah, they did have helmets on thankfully, I'm pretty sure the one guy would have just been dead on impact without one.

They were part of a larger group of riders that took off after the accident. One of the cops that responded said that they had gotten a call just prior to my 911 call about a group of motorcycles driving recklessly on the 405. I hate the toxic parts of biker culture so much, I see groups of riders doing stupid shit all the time and it's just a matter of time until something like this happens.

    Glad it's my Friday

    When I worked at the casino long ago I would get off work at times at 9am and be called back to do another 8 hours because someone called out form filling the machines full of coins {I liked that more than dumping/counting as I could sit on my ass and wait till 30 piled up before I did a run}
But really that was a every other week thing
If I knew then how bad it was going to be out of the Corps I would have begged to go back even in the beat up used condition I was in at that time.

I know this is the work thread, but I need to talk about Grad school.

I was getting really frustrated with my professor for my Networking class because the homework had all sorts of stuff that wasn't in the book or in the power points. I emailed her about this the other day and never got a response. I also was frustrated because it took a week and a half for her to get stuff on our homework portal thing (its blackboard if anyone knows what that is) and I also noticed I was losing points for "in class participation"

I finally figured it out. I signed up for Networking-OL (online), and my registars form and my class schedule say I am in Networking-OL, but somehow my professor added me to Networking-AF2F (face to face) and as far as shes concerned I've missed every class so far....

Dude, I would seriously put the parental controls on for your brother's line. I did that when I ill-advisedly put my cousin on my plan, and the additional five bucks a month Verizon charged me was still way cheaper than dealing with her overages.

Not much, a drill (press), band/jig saw (skil/sliding chop saw might work if it's all you have), and an impact driver. Depending on the scale your could throw one together for $200, or $2000.

Remember, you can get just about any tool for a song at pawn shops. I picked up a solid 80's Craftsman bench top drill press that just needed a new belt for $30

It really comes down to what kind of lead screws you need, steppers or servos, and how fancy you get with the motor control board. You can build the bed from MDF, HDPE, or aluminum (MDF being the cheapest and easiest). The frame can just be OSB or ply.

Here's a photo of the bikes and part of the back of the Navigator from the scene (no injured humans in this picture, no gore or anything):

Also those three motorcycles that stopped were not part of the original group that were involved in the accident, they came up on the scene and tried to offer help. A lot of people did end up stopping to help, while I was on the phone with 911 a couple of off-duty paramedics stopped and began first aid, and then a doctor that was just travelling by stopped and helped as well, tons of people stopped to help create a barrier with their cars and divert traffic until police showed up to do it properly.

Uh. Where on the 405 did this go down? You said it was yesterday right?

It was right between the Howard Hughes Parkway and Sepulveda Blvd exits on the 405 northbound, right next to the Promenade at Howard Hughes.

While I was on leave all the other staff and the volunteers got to assist with a night-time operation to find, dart, and relocate three elephants that had gone rogue and broken into a fruit farm. Culminating in a police-escorted convoy of sleeping elephants on flatbed trucks through the local towns, to get them back to their source.

Sounds very cool and it's a shame I missed out. But to make up for it, apparently in 2 weeks I get to be involved with darting a blind elephant so it can have surgery to regain its sight. Which I am pretty excited about!
