I wouldn't mind somewhere down the future being able to mooch around my anaconda or being able to commute in a lounge on a space station.

Even better would be a instance base or something a group could build together.

I just don't think it's something that's going to happen in elite.

All this talk about the Panther clipper made me go and look at pictures of it. This is probably the most likely design I think?

    panther_clipper_flyby2_by_penny_black-d7xijwq.jpg

I could never mesh the supposed size of it with the thing looking like a lakon-type cockpit placed at the absolute front of the ship. Then I realised.... no, those are not windows, the actual bridge is small the V-shaped thing in top! Of course, things can change between concept at actual model, but if that holds the size of the ship is truly huge if the bridge is Anaconda sized.

    Bonus:

Yeah the Panther Clipper, historically, has been the largest player flyable ship in the Elite series IIRC. In the old games it was considerably larger than the Anaconda and no other ship came close to sheer cargo space.

    h6WAHNM.jpg

Also, as to the release date for 2.4 some fans speculate SEP 20/21 since SEP 20 would be, like, the 33rd Anniversary of the Elite Series. This latest news from FDev now kind of makes me lean towards this being likely.

I don't think the Panther Clipper (or any ship that size) will come soon, as a playable ship at least. They'd have to rethink how their stations work, it'd be a big deal.

I gave the Ferdie another chance last night. I went with 3 plasma accelerators and 2 rail guns (kind of the pvp standard) and just tried to get some practice in with it. It's interesting. So far I've just done a couple bounty hunting sessions with it. Towards the end of last night I kind of had an epiphany about what I've been doing wrong- flying it like an FAS. it just doesn't have the lateral thrusters for that type of circular dogfighting. It has straight line speed, so I should be jousting and finding the right time to boost.

The yellow weapon color on 3 plasma accelerators makes me happy. THROOOM (launches 3 mini Suns at the enemy).

I don't see what would have to change. My understanding is that the ED panther would simply be large enough to barely fit within the dimensions of a large landing pad and barely fit within the mail slot.

It was also one of the first ships we saw concept art of (as seen above) when Elite was in its early stages of development.

The ship not being in game already is more of an oddity then anything else.

I heard that the scale of it was sufficient that it wouldn't fit through the mailslot.

The old panther yes, but the old Imperial Courier was basically a battleship. The concept art suggests "we're barely fitting the dimensions of the mailslot. "

If she weren't fitting the mail slot, I'd expect something more cube-like.

If you want a good idea of the scale of the new Panther Clipper (or rather the one they modeled), look no further.

The modern version doesn't look as long as the Anaconda, but it is still big.

edit- Man, probably takes days to turn too.

G5 dirty drives and a power distributor strong enough to boost on cool down are mandatory on big cargo ships. Time is money, and the real space leg of the trip is just as important as the ftl jumps.

Nah. You cut throttle once you enter the cage and then roll. The friction against the cage acts like a carrier's arresting cable and rapidly decelerates you. That's how you race contraband past customs in a cutter.

I still think it is tragic that they decided to model the ships with these tiny noses or suggest the shape of cockpits that don't exist or are wildly larger than you might infer.

Well I'm trying out my corvette as a combat miner and I now realized that I made a MASSIVE mistake putting quality long range sensors on it.

I'm constantly getting "new contact detected", which ofcourse makes the entire contact list re-randomize itself and makes it REALLY DAMN HARD to check the swarm of prospector limpets that I sent out.

Landing gear? No, you use the remains of Sidewinders and Eagles you ran into through the slot to balance your craft above the docking hatch. Then you scrape them off on the way out through the slot.

    That's how smuggling works, right?

Huh. I only ever use prospector at a time. Do you just fly by and shoot a load of them and track it down later?

Okay, that sounds dirty in retrospect.

I fire off a swarm of 6-8 at a bunch of rocks near me. Works best if you have two prospector controller computers with one on weapon group 1 and the other on weapon group 2 so that you can can fire them off in rapid succession. It can be really hard to check all 8 in the contacts panel before something resets the list.

I'm looking at configuring Voice Attack and I'm finding it to be a challenge seeing as how I've only ever played in VR, so I have no idea what the key presses are for commands.

Anyone have a profile they'd be willing to share? Or a list of macro keypress sequences?

  • General_ArmchairGeneral_Armchair Registered User regular
Most of my voice attack macros are single keypresses for things that I don't frequently adjust. For example, I'll have "toggle landing gear" mapped to some out of the way keyboard button and I'll just say "wheels up" or "wheels down" to trigger pressing that button. All they mapped keys are listed in your controls settings.

My most complex macro is requesting docking priveleges and is as follows. Assuming that your left hand terminal is set to the navigation tab and the station is the top entry in your contacts list, then executing the following macro will request docking priveleges. In my experience the station will always be the top entry for orbital stations, however that isn't necessarily the case when approaching surface bases and consequently the macro may fail for surface bases.
press 1 key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
    pause 0.3 seconds
press E key and hold 0.1 seconds and release
    pause 0.1 seconds
press E key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
pause space key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
press s key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
press space key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
    pause 0.3 seconds
Press Q key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
    pause 0.1 seconds
press q key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
press 1 key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release

Simpler macros are basically phrases to set my power settings to common configurations. For example, the following macro for "cruising speed" sets my ship to 4 pips to engines and 2 pips to shields.
press Down key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
press Left key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Press Left key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Press Up key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Press Up key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Press Up Key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Press Up key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release

Set the control in voice attack to something dumb, then go into Elite bindings, find the control and say the command. Et voilà

My Haz Rez mining corvette is doing pretty well. I'm currently trying to farm up enough Bromellite to unlock the Particle Accelerator engineer. She has two class 7 cargo bays granting 256 tons of cargo capacity and a class 6 fuel scoop lets her traverse the bubble with minimal downtime. Unladen she can jump ~21 LY, which is pretty good for a corvette I suppose. That drops to ~18 when fully laden. She's a bit low on limpets with only 4 prospectors and 6 collectors, but I didn't want to sacrifice cargo for more controllers since pirate combat tends to destroy all of the collectors. I suppose I can swap out the fuel scoop for another collector controller if the station is within operating range of my fuel tanks. Her current configuration is here, but it requires some engineering to work. :

    https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/federal_corvette?code=A0putpFklndzsuf50w0w7l2m2m0q0q0404040404040404B006063cfmCeCe--1vP9P9.Iw18ZlA=.Aw18ZlA=..EweloBhBmUHYBsICmBDA5gG2SEBGCQoA

She's armed with two huge efficient fixed beam lasers with heat vents for long range sniping and crushing shields, a large overcharged gimbaled multicannon with corrosive rounds for softening up armor, twin small efficient beam laser turrets with heat vents for swatting ship launched fighters and maintaining pressure on shields, and a multicannon condor to assist the gimballed multicannon once the shields are down.

For the shields I wanted to squeeze the maximum performance out of each shield point since I knew that haz res pirates would be swarming me almost non-stop and I didn't want a big shield that died from a death by a thousand cuts, so I went all-in on resistance mods and I'm sitting near 70% damage reduction for all damage types.

I'm pretty happy with it so far. I still need to upgrade the engines, but I don't want to fly all the way out to Prof Palin right now. I also might replace some of the resistance shield boosters with some heavy duty boosters, but for now I'm content with the configuration.

I just bought everything at Jameson Memorial (the founder's station) because it's a convenient one-stop shop. I believe that Li Yong-Rui power-play systems have better prices than Jameson Memorial, and I wouldn't be surprised if there is a big sale somewhere that I'm not aware of. If you're pinching pennies, you might want to strip down an Anaconda to just its FSD/fuel scoop and then fly around the galaxy buying the best priced modules by equipping them in the conda and then flying them back to where you are storing the corvette. Alternatively, don't compromise the conda's long-jumper configuration and just immediately store the modules once you buy them. Then pay the comparatively small fee to have them shipped to the corvette's station.

At present I don't think that this is very efficient way to earn credits even if you ignore Quince or the road to riches, but I am enjoying myself and that's what's really important once you have a big pile of money already. It should also be well positioned if they ever buff mining since she's capable of mining within Haz-res sites without needing to call in friends to escort you.

When you're trying to mine, my understanding is that the res site boost extends out 20km from the res site, and that mining the hollow sphere segment ~15km-20km from the res site will mitigate how many pirates will stumble upon you simultaneously, which is good because you draw a LOT of heat once you have some precious metals in your cargo hold. Another reason that I'm probably going to upgrade the reactor is to free up some power to put some shield cell banks in the currently unutilized military compartments to help give the ship a survival boost when the pirate wings sync up and you find yourself ganged up on by 3 wings containing the likes of a conda, python, FDL, and their escorts simultaneously. The AI might not be that good and their builds aren't efficient, but that's still just a lot of raw damage pointed your way.

A tip for those who don't know it, you can regen a lot of shield points out of combat really fast with a shutdown/reboot sequence. I think the shield restarts with something like 50% shield points.

    edit:
For the ship launched fighter, I also recommend using something with gimballed weapons until the crew is at least competent rank. It should be safe to swap over to fixed weapons around then. The fixed beam Imp fighter and fixed multi-cannon condor are both good IMO. The imp fighter will probably be more useful at killing small ships, but that condor just eats into big ships once the shields are down.

    edit2:
Another mining tip: Your collector limpets are DRAMATICALLY more efficient if you re-position your ship so that the you are above the asteroid fragments (your belly is facing the fragments) and if you're as close to the fragments as possible. Generally this means that once you've depleted the asteroid, you need to pull your nose up a few degrees and then use your vertical thrusters to go down. This will improve the collection rate by both improve the pathfinding route of the limpets and shortening their journey.

Since we are talking about mining, I just have to add one thing. If you have a friend to wing up with who is willing to fly as prospector for you, or even better several friends to form a mining fleet, mining CAN be very profitable. Since all cmdrs have individual fragments from the roid, each additional ship mining effectively doubles the yield. This is especially effective if one of team is in a smaller maneuverable ship (preferably with a mining lance on the off chance it is available) doing the prospecting for good roids while the rest fly the heavy "mining barges". Some of the best times I've had in the game from a social perspective were out at Jaques doing fleet mining with uppwards of 10 ships all mining the same rock... so many fragments! I had some neat pics of this, but unfortunately I lost them when re-installing...

I could never get a straight answer here. As you said each player gets individual fragments, but I could never confirm if each rock prospected the same for each player in a wing. So if I prospect 40% painite, does everyone else in the wing who chips off it getting the same result?

  • LodbrokLodbrok Registered User regular
As far as I am aware, yes. If everyone is in the same wing, there should not be a problem. With many ships in the same instance, things can get strange, but that is seldom an issue.

I tried both CGs today. The trading one is great, but I find bounty hunting a bit tedious on a controller/laptop.
