Oh then I played 4 games with only one successful jungle gank (where there were no deaths on my team)

So it's fine, I got demoted.

That's the way it goes. I get to win a few, and then I get into games where no one on my team can just stay even, and I play champs that typically die when you dive them.

So if I don't have any protection, there's not a lot I can do.

Bunch of skins plus a bunch of Azir changes, Vayne, and Xin. Azir seems that he's getting power shifted into his attack speed and less in his abilities?

Xin is...interesting. More attack speed per level, Q loses forty base damage at max rank but has .2 bonus AD higher per hit. His ult is on a lower cooldown and the range is in fact the range of the sweep. His new W does a lot of damage - 250+120% AD at max rank if both attacks hit. His E does a lot less damage now and the slow is a lot shorter (basically duration shifted to his W because it would otherwise guarantee his W?). It has the attack speed now after the charge. His passive has an AD and AP ratio, plus the heal scales with every level and every few levels the damage scales up. Doesn't look ruined. His ult having actual base damage is something very meaningful too. I'd give him a shot for sure.

Star Guardian tuesday night league was kind of a disaster; one group of regulars could not even make it to the final boss in normals and my group couldn't hack it in onslaught (did somewhat worse than the groups of randos I get matched with, although not much worse).

I kind of don't understand the mentality where you can play League for years but only once a week or so, and not have any desire to become mechanically better. Why even play then?

I mean, I guess someone could then look at me frozen in gold 5 for like 3 years, and think look, all it takes is playing with focus and a mind to improve to get to plat, so it's not like you're any better. Which...yeah, fair.

It's a hard game to get good at. You have to put in a real concerted regular effort and figure out a lot of non-intuitive stuff. It also takes a lot of focus.

Yeah there's a lot of moving parts. To some extent there are things you can improve at through study and concentration: the macro game, warding, engaging, etc.

But there's a lot of stuff tied to this game that is physical or mental that's really hard to improve - reflexes, mechanics, snap situation assessment, etc.

It's really easy to plateau because if you're deficient in one of the core areas (mechanics, let's say), you have to become vastly better in one of the other areas such as macro play. While it is possible to improve via training, it takes a significant amount of work and time dedicated solely to that one skill area to see even marginal improvement. When I hit plat 1 back in season 4, I was recording every single game and approaching it critically. I was practicing CSing and Jungle routes 20-30 minutes a day. I'd mentally note every time I could burn flash to avoid a lethal skill shot and would try to keep that in the forefront of my mind. I was playing 5-6 hours every day trying to climb - Learning matchups, power spike break points, jungle and rotation timers. It was a massive time investment.

But even then, I was having a hard time overcoming the Plat 1/Diamond 5 barrier. People are just so damn good at that level, and I'm not sure any amount of practice or training could have gotten me there.

Adding to this, general game knowledge and to some degree skill also increases every season. If you look at, say, early pro play those teams would get dumpstered by anyone today. Stagnation actually means you're improving, just not all that much.

I definitely sympathize, as it seems like it'd be weird to play frequently and not want to be "good," but I also don't play Ranked very much so I'm not sure I'm trying all that hard, either.

I definitely feel this is true as well. Mechanically, players in low to mid gold are easily what would have gotten you to low plat back in season 3. Part of that is refinement, I think. Another part is that people can actually play their preferred roles rather than having to swap around every single game. So you have people who are much better at mid or ADC for example, since they can get that role 75%+ of the time, which gives them a lot more practice. People are no longer playing support as measure of last resort. People actually want to play support now. And boy, supports are really strong!

There's also so much more information and better resources out there for build guides and strategy. Remember the debates years and years ago about whether Mobafire or TSM's guides were better? How you'd have to wait weeks or months for someone to update the guide with the new patch changes or item updates? Now you have multiple sites that can instantly link you to what builds pros are putting together on your champ for whichever role you prefer.

There's now even in game replays! So you can watch you replays without having to download third party software.

All of those things add up, and it's no surprise that the player base gets better and the average skill level is higher.

Another big point is what champ you play. The more you focus on playing a single champ the higher you climb because you learn all of the ins and outs of what it can do.

I mean IMO you have to be enjoying the base game regardless of improvement for any of it to matter. Like, what do you really get from improving? You get to play the same game, but against marginally better competition. Whoopie. Like I do get that trying to improve your skills is enjoyable too, don't get me wrong, but it's hardly central to my enjoyment of games. If anything it's coincidental.

Getting to a certain level of "good" allows you to play with people who coordinate and play better. You can do some basic strategies! You can do cool dives! You can actually team fight. People know how to play and it's not just team death match in mid lane.

When I did my grind from plat 5 to diamond 5 this year, you could see how the game got "Better" where better is defined as "more higher level mechanics and strategies getting employed."

To some of us, that's just as exciting as getting better.

Yep this is part of it for my stagnation. Over the past year or so I've been focusing on bringing my solo lane play up to the level of my botlane play, and also adding Jinx and Tristana to my adc pool instead of getting better at my mains. So I am definitely improving (and feel great about it! It is so cool that I can actually play mid now instead of being terrified of it), but my rank isn't improving. And the point about the playerbase getting better is valid as well.

Last night I played a game where my ping sat between 500-2000ms (I just moved in with roommates I'm assuming it was porn o'clock) for the entire game. Despite not being able to properly last hit I out CSed the sivir.

    Awesome.

So I don't think I've actually played Cho'Gath since his rework (that Riot didn't call a rework, but whatever), so this was the cap to my otherwise pretty terrible night. The TL; DR: 15/1/12. Final health was 7943 with not great stacking, but percentage health runes are fun (for another month :().

If you do look at the link, please remember that I still forget Stoneplate actually exists, though I'm actually pretty happy with the build as-is given their comp. Deadman's was going to be my last item.

Edit: The most important part: their Azir was named "Bear puns" and did not disappoint when I asked about it.

Xin's on PBE with his changes now. His ult range is wide enough that Level 18 Tristana is just barely outside.

So...uh...pretty big. The only thing it'll stop is very long range mage skillshots I guess. That's something but wasn't really his problem.

So I've been stomping the last few games as Twitch. The one issue I have is against MF/Cait I get bullied stupid hard lvl 1-6. Is this just the state of Twitch and I just have to wait until I get an item or two and then go hard?

I have been winning these games once I get IE/Hurricane because Twitch is stupidly strong with his Q+R, but before then Serrated Dirk MFs just tear me up.

MF is a lane bully and Twitch isn't meant to be one. At the very least be mindful of your low creeps or her Q will absolutely destroy you (if she's maxing it you lose over half your health off an execute bounce). Pre six you win extended fights but she doesn't let you have those unless she wants them. Quick trades she's meant to win.

If she gets ahead she can end a game before you become a 1v5 threat because she's a walking ultimate and being able to blast your entire team for four thousand damage over two seconds is generally enough to win a team fight.

I actually feel like I do a lot better when I have a damage or CC support. I think my best games have had a Sion or Leona support to hold them still. Most of the Ardent supports I have had have not been very good though which may be the issue.

Alistar and Taric can both go Ardent easily enough. In the pro games I've been watching they've even bought it on Morgana, though I feel like that probably goes down in effectiveness the further below LCS you are. Karma does plenty of damage in lane and then transitions into a potent Censer user. But then I mean it's not like you can tell people who to play.

It places a little more mechanical pressure on the enemy team. Now when he goes in and they just CC him in the face and kill him, the adc needs to stand two steps closer instead of being at max range
