"an experience that players will want to come back to for a long time to come" reads Destiny to me, or at least the elimination of the traditional single player game.
Which is dumb, because they already have Bioware on Anthem.
there are lots of things that encourage ongoing play habits, not just MMO shooters

The Star Wars/DOTA crossover digital card game we've always wanted
to be fair the old battlefront(s) featured a lot of being dead too, especially in indoor maps, which were grenade city
it was just in those games you could like. Kill a boarding party, steal their landing craft, get a squad together and use it to storm their capital ship before anyone figured out what was going on. fun stuff like that
(I liked Battlefront well enough but mostly as a video game which I had no personal investment in and could use to have conversations with people while listening to Star Wars noises)
(I'll probably get 2 if only to support the campaign's choice of lead character, and play some of the multi, but not expect another long-term amount of play from it)

I'm strongly considering buying a used GameCube and tracking down a copy of Rogue Leader so I can get my dogfighting fix. That game has so much replayability.

There kind of is already a Star Wars MOBA/Card Game on IOS and Google Play.
I think the more telling line is not what he highlighted but the bit about a game that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come
This implies to me either multiplayer or a Destiny style eternal loot grind, or both
Well, you see, it'd be tougher for EA to implement microtransactions with a linear, story-driven game. So better toss that out and add repetitive Skinner box bullshit.
Just remember that half the people you meet are below average intelligence.
“Our Visceral studio has been developing an action-adventure title set in the Star Wars universe,” EA’s Patrick Söderlund said in a blog post. “In its current form, it was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game. Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design.”
That screams to me they're going to move to an open world design.

I just replayed through Resident Evil 4 again yesterday.
All you have to do is make a game fun and interesting, and people will want to play it again and again regardless of the genre.
Either play as a Jedi in training, build your lightsaber, uncover mysteries, and save the galaxy.
Or play as a smuggler/scoundrel, fly/upgrade your own ship, run jobs, get into trouble, and save the galaxy while still serving your own purposes.
Neither will happen.
But you can do that in KoTor
Yeah, I thought about that while writing that post. I played through Kotor 1&2 and TOR for a while. I liked Kotor 1 a lot, 2 and TOR less so. I never did finish even one storyline in TOR.
But mainly I was talking about something single player, action-y, probably kind of presented like Uncharted (since Amy Hennig was on the EA project).
I dunno, I hear TOR has been tweaked quite a bit to let you skip a bunch of the side quests and just beeline through the story. Maybe I'll give it another shot.
Back in the day, I got halfway through Imperial Agent and Trooper - by most accounts, two of the best (or one of the best and one "okay") class stories - before the grinding got me down.
Two years ago, after the streamlining first went in, I returned... finished both of those stories, and proceeded to complete the set of eight. It is so much better now, even for a "gave them money once" player, but especially subscribers (which they're always pushing you towards).

I want a stealth action remake of Dark Forces, without any Jedi shit.
I also want Rebellion modernized.
Also KotOR 3.
And bring back TIE Fighter.
I can't help you with most of this but if you want KOTOR 3, the KOTOR MMO Jedi Knight storyline is basically that?
Though I don't know how much it would cost to get all the content (including expansion packs).
Pretty much yeah. I'd also throw my hat down for Agent and Warrior being excellent as well. The Revan expansion+the Throne stuff is also pretty good. One month of subscription gets all the content unlocked permanently (bar raids and other post game stuff which requires an active sub)
I will be pretty unhappy if this closure really does herald the end of the singleplayer only experience, multiplayer stuff is so not my bag and yeah
"Reading the marketplace" sounds like they couldn't figure out a way to shove unwanted multiplayer and loot boxes in there (and a battle royale mode), so they just cancelled it and shut down the studio instead.

If anything, making a game you simply want to replay is worse in their eyes, because then you’re not buying a new game

The problem with ToR is that the f2p model is terrible and messes with the exp gain which of course screws with the progression path. Then it locks flashpoints behind a wall so you cant really grind it there either. So the only really good way to play it is to just subscribe, but then youre subbing to a game with like no one playing it. And it's combat engine just doesnt hold up very well, considering it came out a while ago now, and was never really as smooth as WoW's to begin with. And people harp about graphics about today's games... swtor is ewwwwwww. Usually it doesn't bother me but it is ugly compared to even other star wars game.
I do kind of wish there were a reason for them to make another podracing game even. But that might require there to be podracing in another movie, which there doesn't need to be. But the original game was fun. I'm still on the fence when it comes to battlefront, because i know that as time goes on the fps stuff will get more and more love while the starfighter stuff will be forgotten. At least until it's too late to recover anyway.

Oh my god.
I started reading Shadow Games a book in which Dash Render signs up to be a body guard (with body and shoulder armor) to a big movie star, expecting it to be maybe a smuggling story or a heist story.
70 pages in it turns into a pulp detective story with fucking dash render as a drunk 2 fisted detective
This is fantastic

Considering EA tanked what was supposed to be the Star Wars: Uncharted game. We'll likely get multiplayer games with single player components mashed into them for the foreseeable future.
It says a lot about McGuinness as an actor that you could give him a ludicrous script that he didn't give a fuck about and he would still turn in a performance with enough depth and nuance that it can have great meaning retrofitted to it.

We will never get a good Star Wars game with EA in the drivers seat.
They should have stuck with "untitled Han Solo film project" all the way to release.
