Streaming! If downloading is like buying a sack of potatoes, streaming is like a person handing you a series of potatoes! So, that is why we stream much of our media these days. TV, movies, etc. But this thread is just for TV and movies. No anime either.

Visit Just Watch or Instant Watcher to check out what is available on streaming services.

Use this thread to talk about what to watch!

I will recommend watching Patriot on Amazon. I have not seen it but I have heard it is amazing.

Cool streaming sites include the big ones, like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO, and so on, but also some smaller ones you might be interested in:

TubiTV, which is free and ad-supported and which has lots of good stuff.
FilmStruck, which has many amazing Criterion collection films - classics!
byNWR, a streaming service run by Nicholas Winding Refn...? Not yet launched.

After seeing it talked about here I've been watching Lucifer on Hulu this weekend.

Which every third episode it so has been "presented by Museum of the Bible. "

I watched the first four episodes of Patriot the other night. It's good, but it is impressively dark.

Well, they DO talk about God a lot in that show... all publicity is good publicity?

Started watch amazon's The Tick this week. Two episodes in and it's ... not bad. I'm a bit tired of the whole "reluctant hero" schtick but given it's only 6 episodes I'm hoping it will be resolved very soon so something else can bloody happen soon.

The Tick himself and Arthur I think are both really solidly done and I'm liking the world they are building so far. Not as outright absurd as the cartoon but that makes the Tick himself only the more amusing.

The show feels cheap as fuck though, holy crap. At least they fixed the Tick's costume between the pilot and the series though.

So I guess I'm the only one who didn't like Mindhunter? They linger on every shot like it's high art, but the rest of the show does not deserve that confidence. Barely anything actually happens because God so much of the show is them traveling back and forth, and I don't care much about what does happen or the people it is happening to. I'm not even sure why I watched the whole thing. I guess part of it is my hostility to the premise, but like
Even the show itself admits they're actually useless! The Pennsylvania case was solved entirely by the local police talking to the sister and they got super mad their pure speculation wasn't respected by the DA! The creepy principal plot was really bizarre as a modern viewer, it's hard for me to imagine them needing an FBI agent even in another time. With the 12 year old girl good work on noticing the tree cutting, but that has nothing to do with psychology. I guess they actually contributed to the old lady killer with psychology, so that's something.

But I mean the show specifically takes the time to point out and talk about the limitations of their research and why it's still worthwhile despite that?
They start out as basically the typical TV version of profilers, with very like, overly detailed theorizing about their suspects based only on partial evidence, and we see how little that actually helps, and how inaccurate they are. As the show goes on they get more grounded in their approach, looking to define psychopathy and find links between different types of murders and the personality traits of who does them. And more generally it's exploring men's violence against women, the show doesn't shy away from pointing out the big gender dynamics at play, and the way it's part of a larger dehumanization of women.

So what they end up finding isn't really any kind of magical replacement for good old fashioned gumshoe police work, but theories that do help them in their interrogations of suspects. Even then, like in the tree cutting case, the older agent points out that it's hardly a new trick to put the murder weapon in front of the murderer, but because of their research they were able to have a good idea of what sorts of strategies he'd be vulnerable to, and which wouldn't. If they hadn't gotten the confession their likely never would've been a conviction, even though everyone involved is sure he did it they couldn't have ironclad proven it.

I bounced off Mindhunter quick, but that's mainly because I had no interest in the basic plot from the start. I should probably finish the first episode, though... maybe it swerves.

After three episodes Big Mouth is hit and miss but more above average. There's some jokes that feel straight up ripped off from South Park but it will get clever with some jokes, often from the Hormone Monster (and Monstress). I like ghost Duke Ellington as the random non-sequitur guidance character but the kids themselves are kinda meh and they feel a bit generic. Animation is also weird but sometimes works.

For those who aren't satisfied with the menus and genres available when browsing Netflix.

Use www.netflix.com/browse/genre/XXXX and substitute the code for the genre/sub-genre/category from that page you would like to search through.

American Vandal was very good but kinda ran out of steam towards the end. It could have been edited down to a tight 6 episodes with a more satisfying conclusion. The first ~6 episodes are mostly top notch though, frequently hilarious along with some fun detective work.

    Ending spoilers
If your mystery show doesn't end with the mystery being resolved, I'm not going to be happy. Like, I "get it", but it's still unsatisfying.

Generally if you're not gonna be interested in them interviewing creepy as fuck serial killers, you're probably not gonna like it.

There's some pretty decent murder cases mixed into the season too, but it's all pretty dark. It's good, and it's a smart show that avoids a lot of typical profiler story pratfalls, but it ain't exactly light watching.

slightly nsfw language but just generally nsfw based on being creepy as fuck

Yeah the actor for Ed was the highlight of the series. The resemblance is creepy on top of the performance, how did they even find that guy? I also thought the little sequences with BTK were weird. Surely a significant portion of the audience isn't going to recognize him and is going to be very confused,
and I'm not sure how much they can get out of that setup for season 2 since, spoiler warning, he wasn't arrested until 2005. Although I never watched Zodiac so maybe I'm wrong about the amount of material you can get out of frustration.

I think the BTK stuff was less about plot and more about, like, setting the stage for the ideas about typical serial killer behavior that the guys are researching and the audience is simultaneously learning about. Even though the show is fiction is does have a true crime sort of essay quality to it, and as we go through the show we recognize each of these little self-contained scenes as another step BTK is taking towards becoming the serial killer we all know and definitely don't love. That it's BTK and not some more other killer than gets caught closer to the era of the show is sort of signalling that no, it's not really part of the plot, but it is thematically tied in.

It's going to be a series
spanning decades. They'll probably have BTK murdering over the years as they interview and/or catch other serial killers while he serves as a foil(not sure that's the right word in this context?) and frustration for the main characters in their development and application of their theories.

This would be a more interesting way to handle it. As coinage said they might not be able to keep the tension if it focuses on BTK as a central point considering the span they are planning for the series. It could be tiring fast.

But the plot looks stupid and the comedy is so completely "miss" in that trailer.

Would they really have Shrek still in this world? The whole fairy tale genre would be upended when you have loser elves and dweeb orcs running being losers compared to us super sweet humans.

I'll watch it because it's gonna be on Netflix but it doesn't look like something I would pay to see. If they just did End of Watch or Street Kings, only with D&D stuff, that would get my attention more.

Speaking of old shows, Hulu autoplayed me into Happy Endings. That show is so funny with a great cast. So dumb they cancelled it after only 3 seasons. I was mad then and I'm mad all over again after being reminded how great it was.

The Babysitter was pretty good! It was stupid in all the right ways. It wasn't the Tucker and Dale genre reversal sort of thing I was hoping for, but I still liked it. It was one of those movies where they showed too much in the trailer, though. Some of those things would've been funnier to see firsthand while watching the movie. Like when the blood wasn't flowing well from the stabbed head the black dude was trying to collect blood from.

I rotate between It's Always Sunny, Parks & Rec, and The Office. Though, I have to skip to season 3 of The Office because Jim and Pam not together stresses me out more instead of making me feel better.

Frasier is my go-to comfort show. I've watched all of it so many times, the show now feels like an old friend and apparently I've memorized most of the dialogue. Yet I still run into jokes I didn't catch or get on previous viewings, which is pretty great.

But I could see Parks & Rec doing the job too.

    King of the Hill

I'd be happy with any of those in perpetuity. Saved By the Bell 2-5 is practically perfect but has a limited run that, like Peep Show, would throw me off after a while, and while Cosby Show used to be a top show for me obvious revelations make that show hard to watch again.
