  I did this for the first time at Origins this year. It was easier than I thought. It's run on he honor system, so you don't have sign up anywhere (although I think you can). Just go the the official D&D website, download the free adventurer's league player's guide and make a character according to the rules (pretty straightforward--no rolling for stats, use point buy or standard dusteibution; only use the player's handbook plus one supplement of your choice). Print out your character sheet and an advenurerer's league log sheet and your good to go.

  And optionally if you have a DCI Number use that. You will only be able to play tier one because you won't have a leveled character, but then you can take that character to any other AL game anywhere and keep getting stuff/xp.

  Do we know if pre-made characters will be provided for the Adventurer's League games? Some of the events specify that they will be but some do not.

  I personally love Adventurer's League because it's so easy to go find a game in/around pretty much any major city whenever i want.
  
  You can look at and download/use the official pregen characters ahead of time at http://media.wizards.com/downloads/dnd/StarterSet_Characters.pdf. Most likely, any pregenerated characters provided during the Con will be from those. I know I'll bring a set of those in case anyone needs one, though I'm not DMing any games.
  
  You can always try to make your own character ahead of time as well. The official Adventurer's League "Players Pack" is a free download at http://www.dmsguild.com/product/208178/DD-Adventurers-League-Players-Pack, and includes the guide to creating new characters, a blank character sheet, and the required logsheet (which will likely be blank until you actually use the character.) Note that there are some things in that pack that may confuse you and you'll want to ignore - for example, you cannot use the Surrogate characters included, those are only if your main character dies as detailed in the Death Curse primer file.
  
  The Player's pack does NOT include any of the Players Handbook content. The 'basic rules' contain a scaled down version of the Players Handbook, including character creation aspects (some races and classes of the bigger set, equipment, and 'how to play') are also a free download at http://media.wizards.com/2016/downloads/DND/PlayerBasicRulesV03.pdf. You can also create a character online through http://www.dndbeyond.com which does a pretty nice job of showing the options and letting you select them, but maybe not good details about each specific selection. It doesn't always enforce the Adventurer's League requirements, but it does default to those in most cases.
