special shout outs to everyone who is stepping up in smaller communities and speaking out against microcelebrities

we will probably never hear about most of them but it is just as important for them to be held accountable as well

who's gonna hold them accountable though

accountability only works if their community or their public has the interest, moral or material, to hold them to their actions

this is no longer the case among large swaths of the population and specific powerful elite communities

in the case of many microcelebs, their name is their trade

anything that tarnishes that can have devastating effects for their prospective careers

what's nick robinson up to after getting fired from polygon

oh listen, no doubt there are repercussions

    for some of them

I was trying to hint at some current republican politicians, and my fear that that trend might spread further as more unscrupulous people try and use it to get out of these accusations

That's a very different situation. Politicians backed by a major political party have possibly the most power and social protection of anyone and almost complete control of at least a branch of the media that would otherwise take them to task in the public eye.

the advent of "fake news" and a precedent of disbelieving the public organs that usually disseminate evidence based information in society is now added to the already existing, massive doubt that is directed at women who dare to accuse or pursue their abusers in any meaningful way

I am concerned about this becoming a wider trend

I think saying "well this can't possibly happen" has served us poorly in the past

Yeah, I've looked up to Takei. It's a huge bummer to hear about what he's done.

Dude straight-up admits to sexual assault on Howard Stern.

And if not for all the scandals going on now, this might never have made headlines.

The idea of women being property manifests mostly in ways that aren't particularly overt.

Yeah, I think it's pretty much impossible to not have it as some kind of background radiation in your life and worldview. I know it's in mine, and I try not to forget that it is because if I do, I can't fight against it.

The thing that really gets me is he denies ever even knowing this guy which would seem to be an incredibly easy thing to disprove.

I mean just think of all the movies and games where the whole goal is to rescue a woman at the end, who then 99.9% of the time kisses her male rescuer.

If you're lucky they even give her a name (in games anyway).

My favourite game of all time is Resident Evil 4, where your task as a mid to late 20s secret agent cop man guy is to rescue the President of the USA's teenage daughter, then as you ride your jetski away to victory in the closing cinematic, she basically says to you

    "you wan sum fuk?"

Even better, once you complete the game it unlocks an alternate costume for her which accentuates her figure, specifically her breasts.

I love that game, but hoo boy is it shitty on a lot of things.

We discovered her berating you for trying to look up her skirt while she's on a ladder by accident during one of the chase scenes; I was trying to shoot a crow or something.

yeah there are a lot of dudes in music who have used shit to take advantage of underage girls which is gross

independently of any major allegations I've heard rumors from people in the scene around Athens GA that kevin barnes from of Montreal is totally guilty of this as well

The mistake people fall into is thinking that actual sexism and objectification and, yeah, even sexual harassment is so overtly objectionable and obvious that there's no possible way that I could think that way or do that

And the reality is that it's so baked into culture that pretty nobody is immunized against it

The other factor, I think, is that it's very easy to append a parenthetical "and if you're not wailing and gnashing your teeth and rending your garments over it, you must be part of the problem," to a lot of the occasions where people try to point that out. At that point, you tune out because you feel like someone's attacked you, which is itself a behavior worth looking out for.

At least I'll give it a little credit for having Leon going "nah sis" at the proposition.

Which means that Resident-fuckin-Evil is better in that regards than, say, Kingsman or like 90% of Bond films, which boggles the mind.

It's easier to see sexual discrimination in cultures other than your own, in time and/or place.

I get invited to asian ancestor worship celebrations, basically death anniversaries, where you put out food for ancestors and stage a mock meal. The woman cooks all the meal items, is disqualified from leading the ceremony and cannot take part in certain sections, acts as an assistant to the man leading the ceremony, must always go second in group proceedings, and stands when the men sit. Otherwise it is a beautiful ceremony.

Marty: The future, it's where you're going?

I just got married a few weeks ago and we had a Sikh ceremony.

Some of the Sikh ceremonies treat the women as slightly less than men (nothing egregious, but the bride isn't allowed to come to some of the ceremonies, even though the guests are).

I told my wife to just come to whatever she wants. It was my way of modernizing the religion in the best way possible.
