Alright, so at my job I sit and process applications for Healthcare for the state... I'm going to be working about 60 hours a week for the foreseeable future.

The good thing is I can listen to Spotify. I find that stand up comedy is one of my favorite things to listen to to pass the time.

So let's discuss awesome comedians... If they are on Spotify that's a bonus!

    for me the all time great is Dave Chapelle

    followed closely by Mitch Hedberg and Chris Rock, and an honorable mention from George Carlin... but Carlin's career is so long and there's only a slice if it that I like... basically just the 90's through 2001

    I badly desire to see Chapelle live, his new Netflix was stuff was superb

    Oh, I have seen a couple stand up shows lives. Saw Mitch Herberg a few months before he died. Saw Jim Gaffigan in Atlanta. I have been to a couple improv clubs (improv. Is great, guys) saw uh....a guy who does guitar shit,...can't think of his name....Stephen Lynch I think? In college as well.

    my current favorite standup is Cameron Esposito and her wife, Rhea Butcher.

    I got to see them in DC a couple months ago, and they also have a fantastic weekly showcase/podcast at UCB LA where they riff with each other and then have on 4 or 5 comics, sometimes up-and-comers, sometimes big names like Patton Oswalt or Tig Notaro. Cameron does a lot of good crowd work and attitude-based material (her bit about periods is nicknamed "Chunks" and involves a lot of yelling), while Rhea's material is much more about tight writing, wordplay, and physicality.

    Speaking of, Tig Notaro is also great.

    Personal writing (her famous breast cancer piece from a few years ago, then doing a good portion of a special topless post-mastectomy), and one of the best deadpans since Mitch Hedberg.

    Kumail Nanjiani is more well-known for Silicon Valley and The Big Sick, but his special "Beta Male" is one of my favorite recent albums.

    I also love a good comedy podcast: Paul F. Tompkins, Paul Scheer/Jason Mantzoukas/June Diane Raphael (How Did This Get Made?), Emily Heller/Lisa Hanawalt (Baby Geniuses), Tess Barker/Barbara Gray/Brandie Posey (Lady to Lady), and Alice Wetterlund/Veronica Osorio (Treks and the City) are my current favorites.

    I've been to three big-time comedy shows. I saw Louis ck ages ago, despite the awful things that came out about him I'd be lying if I said his set wasn't amazing. Saw aziz ansari on his modern romance tour (he actually ended up doing a book based off of the premise of this tour. The book is very good) and he killed.

    Saw John mulaney earlier this year and I came dangerously close to pissing myself from laughing so hard. Best of the three by a meter

    I haven't really watched much stand up lately. 2000-2010 felt like a crazy boom period of stand up. Shows, specials, etc. all over the place. And maybe the specials are still happening, but there's no real show anymore that is a useful showcase for young, up-and-coming comics now that @midnight is off the air. It's sort of a bummer.

    seeing Chris Hardwick do a mini standup set at Blizzcon was hilarious but also made me kinda sad that @midnight is gone

    If you didn't watch Mike Birbiglia's special in the OP it's actually a well crafted and kind of beautiful story in it's own right. Not for guffaws but a feel good special if that makes sense. At least I thought so.

    Patton Oswalt's new Netflix special, Annihilation, is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking. Possibly my favorite stand-up special of all time.

    I really liked Annihilation as well.

    My favorite stand up show ever was something I watched when I was in high school. HBO played what I believe was supposed to be the introduction of Billy Connolly to the US with Whoopi Goldberg introducing him. My cousin and I recorded it on VHS and watched it to the point of wearing out the tape. I'm not entirely sure how well it would age now but at the time we thought we had found the absolute pinnacle of humor.
