So I am finally getting to selling my Orks or at least cataloging.

If I do an estimate based on current GW prices, except my metal big mek I used Ebay average, my total cost for the whole thing at MSRP would be ~$430. How much do I take off the top? Some part painted, some based, some are just built. I am also throwing in all my sprues. I am thinking a 30% cut off MSRP. But that might be too little or too much. Not sure. Thoughts?

Either way it looks like my orks will pay 100% for a new Eldar army.

At the very least 30% off. Depending on model.

Some of my models are no longer in print, big mek with a boss pole metal, for example. I am not going to try Ebay or anything yet. Okay I will do 30%, and have it open for negotiations when I get back from my vacation.

Metal stuff will go for better than finecast prices, if you're patient. There are people who really prefer metal and collect them. I generally do ~$20 as a start for SM metal chars. Plastic, expect 40-60% of retail.

Hmm, there are way to many options in this Tyranid codex for me to make sense of, I swear I used to be good at list making!

I can get 72 S6 shots at 2+ to hit for ~500 pts with three carnifex and Old One Eye, is that good? It sounds good, but I feel the lack of rend might make it a bit of a trap option.

Note that Old One Eye only buffs tyranids in the fight phase, so you can't ever get them better than a BS of 3 (using enhanced senses).

There's been some mathhammer floating around that Dakkafexes are good at basically taking out guys with T4/3+save or worse (i.e. lower Toughness or worse save), but for all other scenarios you should just take two pairs of talons and the tusk biomorph (for +1 attack on the charge) and whichever tail morph you feel like.

If you need to hit a sweet spot, screamer killers are surprisingly versatile, if a bit costly.

Check it (not my math, so don't ask too many questions on it). This represents the average unsaved wounds after a carnifex fires all their shots and completes a successful charge.

So, against T4/3+ saves, Double Devourers is pretty much the most cost-effective option, although if you can get a 2x Talon Carnifex into melee, it's nearly as good, the same with Screamer-Killers.

    ImnLdCDl.png

You're right though, that against tougher things with good saves, the Devourer-fex is....pretty bad! But Screamer-killers stay pretty okay! (but, again, you have to get them into melee for it to matter).

    iHRR4lcl.png

Personally, I'm working out a 1000pt list to mess around with that is 5 Carnifex, Old One Eye, a Flyrant, and some Gargoyles, and my loadout looks like this. With the exception of Old One Eye and the Gargoyles, all my guys force -1 to hit on enemy shooting (hopefully) upping their survival dramatically. Hive Tyrant can cast The horror to further protect against shooting on something scary, or fuck with someone's leadership in conjunction with the Screamer-Killers. I'm not 100% sold on the loadout for the Hive Tyrant, but I think I'll just magnetize it when I pick up the models for Christmas and play around with different things.

Also, Halos, it kind of depends on what Hive Fleet you run as to how good the Dakkafexes are. Kronos or Jormagundr or Leviathan can make really good use of Dakkafexes, especially a slow-moving Jormangundr Dakkafex with Spore cysts is (in theory) hard as hell to take down with T7, -1 to hit for shooting, 8wounds and a 2+ save, or Leviathan can give them a Feel No Pain roll.

I'm focusing on just rushing as fast as possible into the enemy (using Kraken's roll 3d6 advance) and then every turn falling back and charging back in (thanks again Kraken) to possibly deal mortal wounds, and to activate the tusk biomorph for +1 attack on the charge and +1 to hit on the charge, with the Flyrant and Gargoyles for dropping behind enemies to either get objectives or trap people.

EDIT: I've been thinking about this a lot, because I really, really want to make an army as nearly full of Carnifex as I can, so I've been trying to figure out optimum loadouts since the codex dropped

Right, yeah that's why I threw The Horror on my Hive Tyrant, since the -1 to hit during shooting is great, and also getting a -1 LD stacked onto something already getting the -1 from the Screamers is, IMO, worth the extra points on the screamers.

Take a Kraken flyrant. Give him the Miasma Cannon and Rending claws, adrenal glands and poison sacs

Advance him, for an average 21” move.

Have him cast onslaught on himself and smite his target.
Fire the now auto hitting misma Cannon. Always wounds on 2’s ap -2 3 dmg d3 shots
    Charge.
Make your four attacks hitting on 2’s rerolling failed wounds. -3 ap d3 dmg. On a six you do -6 ap 4 damage.
    Kill Gulliman.
He gets back up and counter charges you.
Overwatch him with your auto hitting gun.
Strike before him in combat because of the Kraken Warlord trait.
    Drink ultramarine tears.
Walk away from the table having achieved perfection.

In all seriousness a unit with an auto hitting always wounding on 2’s gun that can fall back one inch, fire it and then charge back in is crazy powerful.

Yeah, I'm torn between the miasma cannon and the chameleon mutation for relics, though you're making a strong case to abandon defense (I.e. chameleon and catalyst) for straight offense (i.e. miasma and onslaught)

I got in a test game over the weekend with my bugs against a Chaos Renegade army. He took a huge amount of troops and the smite spam malefic guys with a few artillery pieces. I took a bunch of biovores, pyrovores, sporocysts and a few blobs of genestealers and termagants with a few neurothropes and a Trygon. It was a blood (ichor) bath!

He did a typical renegade deployment, heaps of guys with malefic lords behind them, then more guys and some big guns. Like a holiday parade but filthier and with more psychic energy. I had biovores behind some rocks and aquarium plants, and a few sacrificial gaunt squads shielding the neurothropes out in the open with their hivefleet cover save. Everything else reserved. He wiped out almost everything in the open, with a single neurothrope and the biovores left. Then I deepstruck all my gun crickets and pyrovores in with the Trygon, and surrounded the enemy in flabby balloon monsters. 30 devilgaunts and 3 pyrovores put almost 200 shots into their chaff, and ate a big enough hole for a bunch of genestealers to turbo boost into their lines and flesh hook the warlord to death. The biovores and sporocysts put a big line of spore mines across the entire length of their front lines. After that they mostly shot up all my termagants and genestealers while spore mines blew apart his stuff and sporocysts blocked off all the objectives.

By the end all I had left were the biovores and sporocysts, and about 30 spore mines doing riot control on the remnants of his unruly mob. A Mucolid Spore was able to one-shot his last remaining artillery piece and I was declared winner of the Field of Aquarium Plants and Styrofoam Boxes.

I think the reasoning is a mix of forgotten golden age tech and the fact the Codex Astartes kind of wiped a lot of that stuff out for the chapters tied heavily to the fear that the uniqueness is part of the heresy.

    At least lorewise.

I understand the reasoning behind some units only having rules for Heresy games, but I think that this is probably the coolest looking model in the entire franchise and it makes me sad that it doesn't have rules for 40k.

The deathshroud terminators are from 30k, the scythe wielding bodyguard guys.

Marines are able to take several heresy era terminator units (because they came out in plastic for capture) along with the contemptor too.

When you got to Forge world stuff there’s a whole host of 30k models with 40k rules. Contemptors, Dederos, Levitathans, Sicarians and the quad weapon battery’s all spring to mind.

There are several models that don’t have rules though and would be awesome. All the custodes and sisters stuff. It would be neat if the specialist Chaos terminators for each legion came over ( and I think they will, should EC and WE get codexes at some point).

In other news I played into the Gulliman Razorback spam list tonight. Won that game when a plauge caster blew up with perils and killed both units holding the objective I needed to clear (to be fair, there were three units with a single model with a single wound left each. Even if he didn’t blow, he was killing them with his fallout triggers. Still it’s cinematic).

Special shoutout to the heavy stubber cultist who, after I killed Gulliman, and then dropping him to one wound again after all my other shooting was done after he got up again, decided to show the autogun members of his squad how it was done, after the scored no wounds, and wounded Gulliman twice out of his three bs 4 shots and killing him.

I'm betting that it would still look awesome (if painted by somebody who was good at painting, had an eye for complimentary color schemes and detail work and was willing to take the time to do it up right, [somebody not me in other words]).
But yes, the black/red/dark gold really plays well with the baroque detail work on the model helping making it look all antiqueish or royal guardish.

    Hey, random question.

I remember back near the tail end of 7th (when the Start Collecting! boxes launched), a few people put together a list of "budget 1000 pt lists", and I was wondering if anyone knew of a post like that for 8th. A buddy wants to get into the game, and I'm trying to figure out a decent price point of entry for him. I mean, of course it depends on what he wants to play, but I was just wondering if anyone had some links lying around.

Yeah, if the person is interested in either Primaris Marines or Nurgledudes this is the best option for getting started without spending a ton of money.

If he/she splits the Dark Imperium box with someone who wants the other army you're looking at probably a hundred bucks (considering the new person is going to need the included rulebook so you can't quite split 50/50). Add one of these if they don't have any hobby tools, then another $15 or so on another brush and 2-3 additional pots of paint and you could get a pretty decent starting setup for only $150 GW (less if you buy from a FLGS that gives discounts). A hundred and fifty bucks might sound like a lot of money for a handful of plastic army dolls, but it's pretty cheap as far as hobbies go (compare it to the startup costs for stuff like nitro RC cars or mountain biking or stargazing or golf, etc).

The Start Collecting boxes are still a pretty good deal, the new Christmas army bundles range from pretty great to fairly ok depending on the army. Both of them are a good way to get started if they're ok with spending a little more.

Make sure and tell them that when they're choosing their first army it's more important to choose one that looks rad as hell or has awesome (to them) fluff as opposed to one that they think might be good on the table in the current meta. Rule of Cool is important for new players, since they'll be spending a ton of time building and painting a brand new army and it'll be a lot easier for them if it's an army that they are stoked about. The only army direction I would recommend is that as a new player they might want to shy away from horde armies because they require the player to purchase/assemble/paint significantly more models than regular or elite armies do before they can get a decent game in.
