This should come as no surprise, but Trickster Online is a really unrewarding game with no fun mechanics. It has cute graphics and it is playable, that's all.

    But drilling is totally rad!

So, RFonline is pretty grindy. I hear that once you get to level 30 or so, there's a great DotA-like PvP war, though.

The zones are also huge and emptyish. Would it have killed the developers to make the main areas a tad smaller? Or add that sweet land-skimmer thing from the intro video?

Anyone know why Space Cowboy Online is shutting down? That game was kind of fun.
Masangsoft (developer) broke contract with Galanet(the host) and its now switching to gameforge with the new and almost completly redone Ace Online; which Korea, Vietnam, and China have had for almost a year now. Theres been no word on how long it will be until we see an international/American release. In the mean time theres a 50x exp rate event right now, and the gm has stated he's going to steadily increase that until it closes. So join up and join in on the pvp because you'll reach endgame levels in about a week or so.

ps: join ANI on the Joymus server.

*sigh* I had 3 reviews finished, 2 of which I really didn't enjoy playing. I was going to post them up yesterday but we had heavy winds and power outages and apparently my UPS/Surge protector no longer works because my CPU had a meltdown. So, no reviews this week. D:

I thought Shattered Galaxy was fun enough that I'm tempted to check it out again, and maybe buy an account this time. Does anyone know if buying an account is worthwhile?

If a Game On of sorts is organized, then I'd definitely play.

I get the impression that paid accounts aren't useful until you're at a decent level.

Also, the website's claim of tens of thousands of simultaneous users is suspect. If it's true, they don't get many new players. Relic (the starting planet) is almost deserted.

I remember playing Dofus way back in the day for about a week or so. The gameplay itself didn't grab me, but I loved the artstyle. I let them send me newsletters because I liked how they were bright and full of pretty pictures. Eventually I bought an artbook from them, which turned out to be a really good idea (I liked it even more than I thought I would).

So now I have my level 16 shades and level 13 Eagles stuck on a planet where everyone out-levels me by about 40. You might think I could try the caverns in town to level up a bit, but the aliens there wreck all my units in a few shots. Needless to say, that won't do at all. And I'm not starting over.

I'd generally advise starting over in this situation: The "veteran" planet is dominated by people who are not only 40 levels above you, but some of them have had 20 or more "reincarnations" (Paying customers at the level cap can periodically trade their level and units for a larger unit hangar and more stat points - there's people who've done this to the point that at level 1 they're effectively already level 30). On top of that, paying customers have several units, some of which at high levels are immensely powerful.

If you're going to play Shattered Galaxy for free, my advice is to stay on the lowbie planet with its level cap. You see some of the pay units here, but they aren't quite as impressive as they are on the veteran planet, particularly since they aren't backed up by 50-60 extra stat points from reincarnations. Personally, I felt the lowbie planet had more strategic fights than the higher level planet. Units can't take nearly as much beating, so it's very necessary to hunt down artillery units and specters, rather than just moving high level tanks onto the capture point. A single nuke can turn a game in the last few seconds, too, whereas many high level units can shrug off artillery fire or nukes.

That's a bit moot seeing as I can't change to a faction on Relic ("No factions are available at this time." when I check the pledge thing), and I don't intend to start over. :P

    KRU support wasn't too helpful:
"The Support Staff can no longer assist with faction movement. The only way to switch factions is to use the star portal I]which I can't do, since no factions are available to switch to[/I. If you are trying to return to the lower level planet, you can use the /relicmove command. Transitioning to the upper planet can be tough to do. I suggest sticking it out. Even a devastating defeat should give your units close to a full level of exp. Soon enough you will be fully competitive in the upper planet."

I might have considered paying down the road, but if they can't even click a button to let me get my bearings in an environment that I stand a chance in, I don't want to bother with it.

    Dream of Mirror Online
    European version
    Penny-Arcade thread
Open Beta--will be Free to play
Cell shaded graphics, lots of classes and a system that makes teaming up with other people actually interesting. The Goons of SA also seem to appreciate this, so there must be some redeeming value to it? A note for European players: we can't play with North America at the moment.

Off the record: if it weren't for playing Baldur's Gate II right now and almost having a new PC so I can play demos of new games (I'm cheap and short on time) I would be playing this right now.

Oh also, Secrets of Solstice (sp?) is hitting open beta. If you appreciated RO, you will probably like this as well.

    Armada Online

Technically still in alpha but it's recently had another large dolop of content so it's looking good. Looslely based on the DC game Armada this is Asteroids the MMO. With giant bio-mechanical enemy crabs.

Six races split into two factions. The game is based around several different zones. All zones are semi-instanced, a maximum of 16 players can be in a zone, if you try and join a zone that's full a new instance will start and any other players who join will join that zone.

Delta 3 is a typical PvE zone where you fly around shooting the Aramda and gaining XP, tresure, and influence (effectively money). Influence can be used to purchase ship upgrades that persist across all zones and it can also be used, along with treasure, to buy a better ship.

Haven is a newbie friendly zone, help escort refugee ships while fighting of the Armada and upgrading your ship. Unlike Delta 3Influence and ship upgrades here only exists whilst you are in the zone. Leave and they're gone. Once you complete the mission you get a large dollop of XP, you get none if you leave early.

The Burn is for players over level 10. It's basically tower defence in space. Defend the star base by purchasing temporary upgrades that allow you to deploy turrets. Hunt down the rogue alien Brains otherwise you're in for a world of hurt later on. Influence and XP work like they do in Haven.

The Neutral Zone is anything but. This si the PvP zone with players split by faction, maximum 8v8. Support NPC constructor ships as they fly out and build bases at various asteroids. Build a line of bases across the map to the opposition side and then assault their star base for victory. Influence and XP work like they do in Haven. Even low level players can be useful by helping to mine asteroids or picking up support powers like Steel Messiah, Echo Locator and Sabotage to make you punch way above your weight in certain situations.

Check out the Wiki to find out what powers require what other powers in the various zones.

As a game it's easy on eye. One thing I forgot to mention is that in Delta 3 you can choose to solo mobs but at low-levels I think that's fairly similar to pulling teeth as a level of fun. Join a group (and there's always a group around who'll want another member) and your fun and influence/Xp gain increase exponentially. All 16 players in an instance formed together in one convoy of hot plasma death? Oh yes.

You need 4-6000 influence to get a tech-level 2 ship. Join a group and you'll easy have that in 4 hours of unstrenuous play.

Grouping isn't a formal mechanism, if any alien gets killed within a certain radius of you then you get Influence/XP even if you did diddly squat. Grouping simply consists of being close to other people (there is a follow ship command to make this easier)

EDIT: So I suppose in a way players are automatically grouped.

Update to Dungeon Runners, they're giving free players in-game ads in exchange for some extras:
    12.10.2007

Here are the patch notes for Chunk #2 (Build 99):

    In-game Advertising
We’ve added in-game advertising to this build of Dungeon Runners. These ads are only visible to free players and they add a whole host of new functionality for our non-paying guests:

    Bank Space
Free players now have one bank page available to them. Paying members now have three bank pages.

    Stacking Potions
Minor mana and health potions now stack to 5, giving free players more room to hold loot. Major potions now stack to 10, making them twice as good as the free player potions!

    Improved Loot Access
Free players may now use what was previously members-only loot. Of course, there has to be a catch… or else why would members be members? This is how it works: 75% of yellow items that drop may be used by free players and 25% of purple or rainbow items that drop may be used by free players. You’ll know if an item can be used because it won’t have “Requires Membership” in the tooltip. All items received from King’s Coin vendors are usable by free players – but are, of course, soulbound on delivery.

    Secure Trade
We’ve added secure trade to Dungeon Runners, by popular demand. This new feature allows you to easily trade items with other players through a simple interface. You may not trade gold, however, only items!!!

    Initiating a Trade
You can start trading with another player by right-clicking their name and choosing “Trade”. You can also type “/trade ” to do this if you like typing. The receiving player will be asked to accept the trade request. If they do, you will both see a neat trade interface pop up on your screen. You must be in the same zone and close to your target to trade.

    Managing Trade
Simply drag items from your inventory to the area labeled “Yours” in the trade interface. You will see items being offered by your trade partner in the area labeled “Theirs”. Click the accept button when you are happy with your trade. Once both of you accept, the items are exchanged.

After making a change to the items offered, everyone’s acceptance is cleared. You must also wait about a second between making a change in trade and clicking the accept button. Finally, as items are added and removed from the trade window, you receive information about that. These features stop folks from pulling a fast one on you.

    Trade Chat
The trade window has a special area where you can exchange private messages with your trading partner. Simply hit ENTER to start talking to them and hit ENTER to send the message.

    The Trade Stash
When a trade is completed, the received items go into your trade stash. You can access your trade stash if it has items in it by clicking the “View Trade Stash” button off of your main inventory screen. If a trade is canceled, any items you offered will be found in your trade stash. Also, if you have items in your trade stash when starting a trade, those items will be automatically offered to your trade partner (of course, you have to click “Accept” before the trade is complete).

    Chat Changes
We’ve made some changes to how world chat works to help facilitate trade and clean up tons of spam you may have been experiencing.

    Market Channel
We’ve added a new world-wide market channel that you can use to offer items for trade. You may only link items in the market channel – world chat no longer allows item linking. Access this new channel with “/m”.

    Joining and Leaving Channels
You can now join and leave the world and market channels with some fancy new commands. Type “/leave world” or “/leave market” to leave the world or market channel. Type “/join world” or “/join market” to rejoin the world or market channel if you have left them. Your channel preferences are now saved on your character and persist between logins.

    PvE Balance Changes
We’ve made a host of balance changes to the game to help improve difficulty and increase skill usefulness:

    * Holy Roller’s mana cost has been reduced.
    * Shadow Bolt’s mana cost has been significantly increased.
    * Shadow Lightning’s mana cost has been significantly increased.
    * Shadow Word: Smackdown’s mana cost has been increased.
    * Ice Shards’s mana cost has been significantly increased.
    * Fire Bolt’s mana cost has been increased.
    * Ice Bolt’s mana cost has been increased.
    * Shields can no longer block magically-enhanced attacks.
    * Blue Screen of Life’s damage-to-mana inflation percentage now reduces as you rank the skill up. This makes the skill more efficient and causes less mana damage at higher ranks.
    * When under the effects of fear, your character will no longer get stuck running in a corner. In fact, your character will turn around in such situations.
    * Monster attack rating has been increased.
    * Defense rating for scale, plate and crystal armor has been significantly increased.
    * Way of the Roo now passively increases melee attack rating by 100%.
    * Non-combat health regeneration has been reduced by 33%.
    * The time before health regeneration begins after taking damage has been increased to 10 seconds. This applies to monsters as well as players.
    * The time before mana regeneration begins after casting a spell has been increased to 5 seconds.
    * Ratsputin’s boss encounter has increased difficulty.
    * Monster groups from Frump’s Misfortune and up have been improved for difficulty and entertainment value.
    * Light in the Loafers now has a fixed duration of 15 seconds regardless of skill rank. Also, as the skill is ranked up, the cooldown is now decreased. Light in the Loafers is no longer an instant cast spell.
    * All damage buff skills have had their cooldowns and durations adjusted. These adjustments allow you to use the skills more frequently than before. Upper ranks of elemental damage buff skills have been increased in power.
    * The swivel arm action skills have had their cooldowns and durations adjusted. These adjustments allow you to use the skills more frequently than before. The overall strength of the speed increases have been reduced on these skills.
    * Trigger Finger Frenzy has been reworked. It now lasts 15 seconds with a 45 second cooldown. However, the attack speed increase has gotten a major boost.
    * We've reduced the travel speed of ranged weapon projectiles to 180 units per second (down from 200).
    * The range for all ranged weapon projectiles has been increased to 180 (up from 90).
    * Players now receive 60 seconds of damage immunity when changing into a non-PvP combat instance. This immunity causes all monsters to ignore your presence. Any action taken by the player will immediately remove this immunity.
    * The damage per point of intellect for skills has been increased to 1.5 (up from 1.17).
    * We've fixed a terrible bug in our damage over time skills that caused one damage tick not to be applied.

    PvP Balance Changes
We’ve made some changes to the PvP experience based on play-testing and user feedback:

    * Low-level PvP “twinks” have been nerfed. Their damage potential, health and remapped attack ratings have all been reduced. We highly recommend that you achieve at least level 10 before heading over to the PvP server.
    * Skill cooldowns are now reset when the match begins and the doors are opened. This lets you adjust your skills based on who you’re fighting.
    * Damage reflection effectiveness in PvP has been halved.
    * Yellow Belly now lasts 5 minutes and no longer allows the affected player to enter into the PvP queue.
    * We've added "skunk" rules to PvP. Teams may now gain an immediate win if they get 7 kills to 0 or if they lead in kills by 10.
    * Outnumbered players in PvP have been given a mana bonus equal to 15% per additional player on the opposing team. This shows in the descriptive text during PvP and on the tooltip.
    * The chance to get a King's Coin for winning a full-length PvP match has been increased to 100% (up from 75%).
    * Magical skill shots involving weapons no longer cause damage reflection (i.e. butcher, fear shot, poison shot, etc).
    * References to "Red Team" and "Blue Team" in PvP are now colored to match their name.

    Skill Aiming Improvements
Most projectile skills have had their aiming code modified to help improve your ability to hit with such skills. If you use a position-targeted skill (i.e. Fire Bolt or Poison Shot) and are clicking on an enemy then your projectile will be aimed properly at the enemy you click on. Holding SHIFT down when clicking overrides this behavior and causes your skill to be aimed where you are clicking on the ground. Position-targeted skills should behave more correctly when aiming at a monster’s head now.

Several ranger skills have been modified to be position-targeted to take advantage of this improved targeting: Poison Shot, Fear Shot and Putrid Penetration. Rangers, remember that this change will allow you to shoot a skill simply by clicking on the ground (just like mages). So, be careful where you aim that thing!

    Sam may sell Mythics!
Sam now has a chance to offer Mythic items for your King's Coins. Be on the lookout! We’ve increased the stack size for King’s Coins to 100 to help you take advantage of this new feature more easily.

I downloaded and tried out Irth. Apparently, the people that designed the game have never played a single video game in their entire life. Not only is the default control scheme so convoluted and confusing that it makes it impossible to play, the options to bind the keys are so vague and bloated I decided it was a better use of my time to just not play it.

Seriously, I'm not looking for "dur dur Halo" simple, but fuck it if I have to decipher 80 keybindings that aren't grouped in any fashion but instead just all thrown into one list alpha-numerically (instead of in subgroups such as movement/combat/etc).

As far as I can tell there's no automated way to do this. However, at the moment Armada Online doesn't do any e-mail validation so I think you can use a completely nade up e-mail address at a nonexistant domain to sign up.

    Here is my miniminireview:

I did the usual first quests, kill some wolves which are actually badgers, blah blah blah. The people that were digging outside of the town when I first saw them were still digging about 20 minutes later when I was doing more quests.
Something tells me they have been and will be doing it for longer than that. Uninstalled.

Soooo, you were having fun with your pal, you looked at some people who (to you) didn't look like they were having fun and decided to uninstall?

    Did I get that right?

    It was more like:
I really wasn't having all that much fun as the combat consisted of clicking the sword button, waiting for my character to kill the enemy, then repeating.
The controls were mouse only, no WASD, which was a large pain.
Then, upon realizing that a substantial part of the populace was sitting around hitting a single button once in a while in hopes of finding items for large periods of time, I decided to uninstall.

I admit it does make sense if you're looking for a social game, as it allows characters to talk while only having to hit the dig button once in a while, but I prefer games with some semblance of depth, which the game offered little to no hope of.

    Oh, aha.

    Yeah, that sounds a lot like that other abortion of the same company: Fiesta. =_=;;

Not sure if these count as MMO's but Travian and Tribal Wars are pretty fantastic. Browser based and free unless you want additional functionality that in tribalwars just makes your life easier, in travian it gives you an edge over non-payers but not a huge one.

I'd say more about them but i think they are fairly well known so it'd probably redundant to spend ages summarising them.

Great list by the way. Downloading perfectworld as we speak and playing 9dragons as it downloads. 9dragons seems kinda fun for a while but the click to move system always turns me off, and the combat is very uninvolving. Also seems too grindbased for my tastes.

DOMO while slightly grindy,is a pretty awesome game.I was surprised by the fact that it had story sequences, not to mention save for a few small grammatical errors not very engrish.

I also found how awesome some parts of this game is,I sold some of my lower swordsman armor to a NPC,only to gain experience for doing so.

Pretty nifty if you ask me.
