Man given how fast they move, if the fire was 8 miles away I’d already be gone.

    Nothing. Matters.

We've got bags packed, and we're keeping an eye on the alerts. We're southeast of the fire and the wind's still blowing southwest, so we should be okay.

Yeah, it's better to be safe than sorry in this case. The LA Times interviewed a couple from Shadow Hills that left to take stuff to a safe location and when they returned an hour later their house was burned down. The Creek Fire hadn't even jumped the 210 before they left.

Speaking of the Creek Fire I'm not seeing any updates on size (still 11k acres and 0% contained) but officially 30 structures have been destroyed and the mayor of LA has declared a state of emergency.

It's kind of surreal to check out people's public Snapchats on the map, lots of little fires all over.

Also a bunch of videos of semi trucks turned over because that's how bad the winds are today in some areas.

Oh jeez, I know some people that live in Tujunga, which is in the mandatory evac zone. They had to evacuate, but they're OK.

The Rye Fire is moving west towards Simi Valley, fire authorities are saying to stay alert if you're in that area.

Woke up to see we have a new 50 acre fire near the Getty Center. 405 lanes closed in both directions from the 10 to the 101. Mandatory evacuations for parts of Bel Air and the area around the 405 and Mulholland Drive. No mention of containment although originally only one half of the freeway was closed.

The Thomas Fire in Ventura has jumped the 101 freeway and is up to 65,000 acres in size. A curfew is in place from 10pm to 5am. Still 0% contained.

Beyond the obvious threat of death and destruction from the fire, the closure of the 405 during peak rush hours this morning is going to create chaos. The 405 is such a major thoroughfare. If they've got Sepulveda Blvd open still that'll help but it'll get congested fast, and I wouldn't want to have people stuck there if the fire jumps the 405.

Heard back from my dad and it looks like my Grandma will be able to return to her house this afternoon. His workplace is also pretty far from the Ventura fires. As for my mom, the sky is clear around their place but she still senses the smoke, so as long as she stays inside with her air purifier she ought to be fine. Good thing she works from home and doesn't have travel this week.

They reopened the 405 southbound lanes but northbound is still closed, the fire has expanded to 150 acres with 0% containment. Mandatory evacuations for everyone in a rectangle bound by Mulholland Drive to the north, the 405 to the west, Roscomare Road to the east, and Sunset Blvd to the south.

I live on the opposite side of the hill from the fire, so it hasn't really impacted my neighborhood. But I work on the fire-side of the hill; getting off the subway this morning, I could already smell the smoke from underground on the train platform. Shit's wild.

The 405 north is open again but I'm not seeing any other updates one way or the other about the Skirball Fire.

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake was registered about an hour outside of San Diego, centered around Julian, CA.

No reports of an issues from it but fuck, checking the news for fire updates and seeing QUAKE CAM at the top of the page made my heart jump.

Whoa, I'm right near downtown SD and didn't feel anything. Luckily things are generally pretty quiet down here, compared to the rest of the state...

4.2 is big enough to feel near the epicenter for sure, but I'm not surprised you didn't feel it in downtown San Diego.

I felt it just north and tiny bit east of downtown San Diego. Building shuddered, but I figured it was just a large truck or something passing by.

Also jeez that video. It's like you're going to work in fuckin' Mt. Doom or something!

Also San Diego county's gotten warnings about high winds and fire potential. It's dry as a bone here in the valleys and canyons too, so if something did start it would probably catch.

I understand that fire is bad news unless you're a certain type of plant, and that it must be a terrifying situation to be in, but damn that video is incredible.

There aren't a ton of updates yet this morning but the Thomas Fire in Ventura continues to be a total bastard and has grown from the previously reported 65k acres to 96k acres. Partial evacuations have been ordered for Carpinteria in Santa Barbara county, marking a new westward boundary for the fire. The 101 is closed again between SR-126 and SR-150, and a portion of SR-150 is also closed.

Lyft is offering free rides to anyone affected by the fire and trying to get to an evacuation center. As long as your destination is one of the evac centers and you use the code LASAFERIDES they'll pay for up to $40 worth of travel.

Also there were a total of 4 notable earthquakes outside San Diego last night, from 3.0-4.2 magnitude. So if you felt some swaying that would explain why.

There was a brushfire in a relatively well-populated canyon in Malibu this morning but fire fighters and residents got it under control before it became a big issue. I guess a lot of people just started hitting it with their garden hoses.

There's a new 20-acre brushfire in Murrieta that's threatening structures. It burning pretty rapidly so expect that acreage to grow.

Orange County, Riverside County, San Bernardino county and all counties south of them to the Mexican border (San Diego included) are under a "purple flag" fire danger warning, a more extreme level of fire threat due to an abundance of fuel, very dry conditions, and strong winds gusting 75+ mph.

    jgeisjgeis Registered User regular
Yeah that Murrieta fire is up to 225 acres now. The wind is really fucking shit up. They've issued some evacuations out there so if you know people near Murrieta you might want to check in on the evacuation instructions/areas.

Woah, there's a 2000 acre fire burning in San Diego county near Bonsall. They're recommending people in Vista and everywhere west of Bonsall all the way down to Oceanside on the coast to prepare to evacuate at some point because the fire is moving really fast.

Yeah even in San Diego proper we were getting winds bad enough that it knocked power out for a little while.

At this point I'm just waiting for like a freak typhoon to hit us and a volcano to pop up under the city. Shit needs to chill out.
