STEM sure is a weird place.
One thought though - Linus did take the best map of the woods with him and he could theoretically add to it and plot the way out so he knows how to get back.

I just realized that is a lot of rope, as in I would think rope in that amount would only be available at the rope course...
Did Linus pilfer it?
Did he have contacts within the rope-course kids?
Was he one of them when he was younger?
Is Purdy his Jessie's-girl?!? Did he think that she and Brian were a 'thing' now and that he had to go into self-exile to get away from his feelings?

For what it's worth, I think that these kids are in the bardo - an intermediate stage between one's death and reincarnation. =Lincoln in the Bardo= by George Saunders is one interpretation of what the bardo might look like. This comic is another.
