All games slowing down on new laptop

Magic PinkMagic Pink Tur-Boner-FedRegistered User regular
I got a new laptop and I can play almost any game on it I play on my big desktop at equal video settings but I'm suddenly getting a weird issue that, no matter what game I play, the thing slows down to a weird stuttering about every 2-3 minutes. I've updated everything but it's still happening. Any ideas? Should I post my dxdiag?

What are the specs of the laptop? Without any other context I'd guess that the CPU and/or GPU are throttling down because of thermal issues (heat)

One obvious thing is that it could be downclocking the GPU/CPU due to temperature. This is more likely if the issue appears to go away after letting the laptop sit idle for a time. Does the issue seem to appear when a specific part of it is very hot (probably where said parts are)?

Nope, it starts right away all the time on all games. Maybe it's just instantly overheating? Can I get an add on fan or something for it?

Well, it doesn't exclude the heat possibility--especially if your fans are running overtime and cool it down very quickly between games. But it could be something else. You could try getting one of those USB-powered fan sets you put underneath a laptop, but those are only so effective (they're mostly to keep your actual lap from getting cooked).

If it's take-apart-able you might want to open it up and see what the dust situation looks like.

    Grab this: https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

That will show you all your temps, CPU, GPU, etc. When running a game get a snap shot of your temps.

(Normally I would recommend Open Hardware Monitor but it hasn't had a release in like 4 months and is way out of date).

Also, go in to the Nvida Control Panel (Right click your desktop) -> Manage 3D Settings

At the top of the Global Settings should be a drop down something like prefered GPU. Make sure that says Dedicated Graphics and not Integrated Graphics or Automatic. Nvidia's detection of when to use the dedicated is sometimes shit and it will just kick over to the integrated for no reason. Happened on my 970M laptop for a while until I changed that setting.

In the Global Settings themselves scroll down and find "Power management mode" and set that to Prefer maximum performance as well. You will have to game plugged in because this will eat your battery, but generally with a gaming laptop that's a reality anyway.

And the final thing, make sure you're on the latest drivers. Go grab the latest driver package from http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/126585/en-us (seems you did this, I should read better)

You may be lucky enough that all it takes is a good burst with compressed air in the primary vent to remedy the problem (though that's a temporary solution of course). This is more at home with older laptops, your Dell Inspirons, etc., that ran very hot (with high-end CPUs and mobile discreet graphics) rather than the more efficient Ultrabooks. But on the bright side, it's very cheap (next to taking it apart). My old Inspiron stopped downclocking itself after I just blew very hard into the vent (not something I'd recommend necessarily).

If you can take it apart to clean it you should though. You can make things worse in the long run by backing dust up in the veins of the heat exchanger rather than actually getting the dust out of the system. If you can't access the fans easily though, blowing air into the vents is probably better than nothing.

Check what GPU your games are using, windows sucks with switchable graphics. If you are using the CPU to render newer games it's gonna make a ton of heat and also suck at it. You can generally see this in the games graphics settings menu. The Nvidia control panel also has settings that can help you manage this per program.

Side note, Quadros are good work station cards but not necessarily good gaming cards so this can be an issue.

That paticular quadro card is the lowest end one in that series. It's not really designed as a gaming card. IT looks to be about similar in benchmarking scores as a GTX 960M, but that's just synthetic benchmarks. It's also slower than a desktop card like the Radeon 7970, which is a was released at the end of 2011. This is not a card for gaming.

You could probably run games at 1080p on Medium-low settings, but if you're trying to run them on high it's definitely not going to run them well.
