Tell me about it. Mexican food sucks here in California. I literally can’t wait to go home to TX for real Mexican food. Tommy’s also does breakfast tacos btw, so you can go there as well. Believe me, they’re the bomb. Ask for barbacoa tacos and big red. Bacon and egg tacos and potato and egg are also good. Papas rancheras are delicious.
The Pearl - http://atpearl.com/ 2 miles from the convention center. I can't say enough things about the variety in this place, they just opened a food hall called the Bottling hall with more options like a Ramen bar, Burger place, a Rotisserie, etc... It even has a speakeasy bar in the basement called Jazz Tx. In the Pearl is a wine bar High Street that opened recently, along with Southerleigh http://www.southerleigh.com/ a great brewery/souther seafood restaurant. Basically show up and walk around, shops, food, and bar options galore.
Alamo Brewery - http://www.alamobeer.com/ - 1.3 miles from the convention center. Great beer and atmosphere close to Alamo Eat street and there is generally a food truck or two out front on weekends.
My musings as a local:
Anything directly on or off the Riverwalk will be a tourist trap for the most part. That's not saying there aren't gems or you wouldn't enjoy it but you can generally find a better version of said food a short walk away.
Activity downtown on the weekends is usually centered around the Riverwalk, as you head north it gets a little barren until you hit The Pearl. South of Downtown, affectionally known as Southtown is where all the hipster gentrification is happening. There are some great places, easy to walk and locals regularly frequent everything there. Bar hopping and grabbing an app here and there is pretty easy if you want a leisurely evening.
There isn't much West either beyond Market Square, consider that the border for the most part. East of Downtown is really sketchy, beyond going to like Alamo East Street, and Alamo Brewery there really isn't a reason to venture beyond interstate I37.

1st PAX was Prime 2010. Made it to several more Primes/West. Been to East and South. Headed back to West in 2019 for my 12th PAX.
