I have a secret fondness for novelty bands wearing disguises.

This is a band called Here Come the Mummies. I saw them at a festival and dug their incredibly dumb comedy and their funk sound, even if their instruments are a little...outta tomb.

Here Come the Mummies is a funk band, best known for its live performances. It consists of various professional musicians based in Nashville, Tennessee. There are rumored to be several Grammy awards among the members,[2] though this is difficult to verify, as the identities of band members are kept "under wraps." Members are believed to be under contract to various record labels, hiding their identities so as to prevent contract disputes while performing.[3] They have performed at venues primarily in the South and Midwest of the United States.

I know Norm Macdonald is super liked among comedians and generally people who are deep into comedy, but I've legitimately never seen a single thing from Norm that I found funny in any way.

    So

Etrian Odyssey V is really fun

I’ve never played anything in this series before, but I needed some games for my trip, and I’m really glad I picked this one.

Walked in the door this morning and immediately heard a coworker lamenting the aggressive oppression of the New World Order to another coworker. "They're out to get all of us", she exclaimed as I walked by and kept my eyes on the floor,
because I am a member of the New World Order and do not want her to blow my cover.

    In movies? Books? Games?

    movies

@Tav sorry for the wait, here's what I came up with. It's weird, there aren't as many mystery movies as you'd think. If you google mysteries you get a lot of action movies about cops, action movies about gangsters, or just weird shit like Blue Velvet and The Prestige.

Here are movies that are actually about detectives (real or private) solving cases and also actually good:

    - LA Confidential - one of my favorite movies ever, a huge sprawling modern noir with a great cast. Three detectives - a sleazy Hollywood vice cop, a thuggish bruiser, and a career-minded social climber - try to solve the mystery of a massacre in a diner.
    - The Maltese Falcon - Humphrey Bogart is a ruthless, greedy private detective trying to solve the murder of his partner, whose wife he was sleeping with. A classic, easy to watch, holds up today.
    - The Big Sleep - Humphrey Bogart is a cynical, world-weary detective solving the murder of an underworld porn kingpin. Also a classic, also easy to watch today, although the plot is complicated as fuck and made more complicated by the fact that they couldn't use words like "porn kingpin" in the 1940s so you have to infer that he's a porn kingpin from the fact that Humphrey Bogart looks at a film roll and frowns.
    - The Naked City - a classic noir from the 50s. Two NYC detectives discover a fashion model OD'ed in her bathroom and try to piece together what happened. It's one of the first movies to be more openly frank about sex, drugs, etc.
    - Murder by Decree - Christopher Plummer plays Sherlock Holmes going up against Jack the Ripper in this mystery from the 70s.
    - Mona Lisa - Bob Hoskins used to be a minor henchman for the London mob and he's just gotten out of prison and needs a job, so his old boss hooks him up with a gig driving/bodyguarding a high-class call girl around. The mysterious call girl seduces him into searching for a friend of hers from her streetwalking days who has disappeared into the sex club underworld.
    - Gorky Park - William Hurt is a detective in Soviet Moscow in the early 80s who has to solve the murder of a girl with only the resources of a broke, corrupt police department.
    - Clockers - Another one of my all-time favories. This is basically The Wire: The Movie (and the guy who wrote the book this is based on ended up writing for The Wire). Harvey Keitel is a Brooklyn detective investigating the murder of a dirtbag in the projects. Mekhi Phifer is his prime suspect, a dealer on the corners. The movie follows them both and kind of examines their world but it also has this mystery running through the core, with a surprising resolution.
    - Murder on the Orient Express (1974) - a classic story in a classic version, with Albert Finney as Poirot and a ridiculously great cast including Sean Connery.
    - True Crime - this is a really understated and quiet little movie with Clint Eastwood as a reporter investigating a death row case, a murder in a convenience store. What I love about this movie is how mundane it is. The plot hinges on completely ordinary real-life details and it never ends up in a car chase or a fight scene or any of that sort of shit.
    - In the Heat of the Night - A classic about a black detective from Philadelphia caught up in a mystery in rural Alabama, where he clashes with the racist white sheriff.
    - Lone Star - A great indie mystery/drama with Chris Cooper as a small-town Texas sheriff, the son of the town's popular previous sheriff, who has come back home from NYC to take his dad's job after the old man's death. Some soldiers doing exercises on the nearby Army base stumble across a skeleton in the desert, and the skeleton is wearing a rusted badge - the badge of the infamous previous previous sheriff, a hated bully whom Chris Cooper's dad had run out of town in the 50s.

MacDonald has some really poignant thoughts on comedy, but isn’t a great comedian imo

His deconstructionism is really interesting to listen to, and he loathes low-brow comedy

The entire run of Inspector Morse is basically 33 two hour whodunnit movies, with a terrific double act of leading men in John Thaw and Kevin Whately.

Death on the Nile substitutes Peter Ustinov for Albert Finney as Poirot, but keeps a similarly starry cast and has a ton of fun along the way.

Suspect has young Liam Neeson accused of murder and Cher (!) defend him in court in a satisfying legal whodunnit.

Jagged Edge sees Jeff Bridges as the man accused and Glenn Close the attorney who has to find the truth.
