I don't feel good about it since there were obviously some people who like, staked their entire savings in it or blew inheritances etc

Lake Tahoe is worthwhile to visit. Beautiful hiking and scenery all around. Gets crowded in the summer but still a cool place to escape the heat in the valley. Southshore is more commercial but has some good eats, and Northshore is awesome if you're looking to do some floating on the Truckee or having a beach day
